English people are second class citizens

Aibu To be annoyed about so many Facebook posts about celebrating st George's day being racist. No one post this for st Patrick's day, st Andrew's or st David's.... Hogmanay and burns night have parties

By celebrating being English, passing democracy to the world, Shakespeare, Agatha Christie, TV, the jet engine, the internet... railways, the industrial revolution, beer, the Beatles... All should be celebrated.

Yes we did some shite things...but white slavery (20+ million), the Holocaust, programs in Eastern Europe. King Leopold of Belgium hunting African people. The depopulation of parts of the USSR, the ethnic cleansing of Bosnia.....all things that in the last 125 years England has nothing to do with...yet people like to think that we who celebrate our Englishness are scum.

Just walked past the church hosting a St. George’s service with all the local scouts attending.

A large town nearby with a high migrant population hosted a free St. George’s festival at the weekend aimed at families - Morris dancers, Punch and Judy shows, kids walking around with shields and swords.

I think because the country gets behind our football team there’s no real reason to whack out the flags again and sing Sweet Caroline in mid April.

I do think it's a shame that being an English person who is proud to be English seems to be synonymous with being a racist. It would be nice if it wasn't, but unfortunately it does seem to be a certain type of person who makes those connections when complaining.

Yes plus Anglo Saxon but it is an English law agreement that for example the US used.

I would note that the Founding Fathers of the U.S. all received an education in the classics and drew heavily from the same ancient Western history that the English did. They went to the original source.

LOL. Love how St George’s day apparently represents being English. But St George was born in Turkey!

Turkey didn't exist when St George was born. He was born in an region that now forms part of modern Turkey but was actually under Roman control at the time. Lots of patron saints are not of, or from the places they are patron saints of.

St Patrick was probably born in Wales or Scotland. St Andrew was a Jew from Galilee. Amazingly, no-one seems to use this a stick to beat the Scots or the Irish with. Yet every year without fail some smug twat will pompously announce that St George was Turkish as if that's supposed to take the wind out of our sails somehow.

Ironically for all the accusations of England being more racist than Scotland and Wales is that the national team is more multicultural!

Maybe the scots and the irish aren't wanging on as much

ZiggyZowie · 23/04/2026 21:02

em, TV was a Scotsman....

About what? St Patrick's day is mentioned for several weeks before it actually is.

Have yourself a party then. Wave your flag, paint a few roundabouts.

Pathetic

Silversaxo · 23/04/2026 21:04

It’s been hijacked by racists, feels dirty “celebrating” or even acknowledging it IMO.

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 23/04/2026 21:05

Lndnmummy · 23/04/2026 20:20

There is no way, anyone will see that disgrace of a flag and feel welcome as a stranger. (Said very much as a stranger).
What is it you feel the need to celebrate exactly? Slavery? The Monarchy? Colonialism? Brexit?

There is no disgrace in the English flag. It’s hardly a fucking swastika.

Abso · 23/04/2026 21:05

The only posts I have seen have been racist. Not celebrating our history but saying how to be English is to be white. And it isn't.

IamRedCrossnotJesus · 23/04/2026 21:05

programs in Eastern Europe

Which programs do you mean? The White Horses? I loved that as a child. 🎶 Snowy white horses let me ride away 🐎 🎶

These days you get arrested and thrown in prison just for saying you're English.

Edit: Bollocks! Beaten to it by 10 minutes!

These days, if you say you’re English, you get arrested and thrown in jail.

When did this come in?

I've just got home from a party...my mates have organised. It happens every year in our middle class town... only us working class attend

That was early to get home from a party

Itsmetheflamingo · 23/04/2026 21:10

St George’s day just isn’t a big deal

latetothefisting · 23/04/2026 21:10

ironically most of those things you are proud of were not invented by the English!

Democracy - been around for millennia but Ancient Greece is considered 'the birthplace of democracy'
Beer - again been brewed for at least 5000 years in ancient Mesopotamia and China
Railways - depends on what your definiton of railways is but both the first non-horse powered railway and the first passenger railway were in Wales
Television - rival claims between an American, Scot and German who invented it first - none of whom were English!

I could go on....

I scrolled the thread on tender hooks hoping to see it! Unfortunately, both you and I have been taken seriously 🤣

Larry has ruled 10 Downing Street for 15 years! 😸

I love Larry. Like many people, I keep my eyes peeled for him every time the news cameras are outside No 10.

Are you serious? 😂You don't think the Irish make much of a fuss about St Patrick's Day?

St Andrew's Day is a public holiday in Scotland.

Whereas what is St George's Day in England? Something English people are made to feel foolish, grubby, racist or imperialist for wanting to recognise. St Patrick's Day you can buy a stupid hat, join a big parade and get pissed at 11am in the morning and no-one cares. It's all great fun, apparently. A cultural treasure.

Whereas with St George's Day you should feel thoroughly embarrassed and a bit stupid for even wanting to acknowledge it. The responses on this thread are proof of that.
