Aibu To be annoyed about so many Facebook posts about celebrating st George's day being racist. No one post this for st Patrick's day, st Andrew's or st David's.... Hogmanay and burns night have parties

By celebrating being English, passing democracy to the world, Shakespeare, Agatha Christie, TV, the jet engine, the internet... railways, the industrial revolution, beer, the Beatles... All should be celebrated.

Yes we did some shite things...but white slavery (20+ million), the Holocaust, programs in Eastern Europe. King Leopold of Belgium hunting African people. The depopulation of parts of the USSR, the ethnic cleansing of Bosnia.....all things that in the last 125 years England has nothing to do with...yet people like to think that we who celebrate our Englishness are scum.

When did this come in?

These days

JustSawJohnny · 23/04/2026 21:15

I don't believe this happens in the slightest.

I have never in my entire 53 years seen or heard of a St George's day celebration.

We as a country gave that up, or decided not to bother.

That said, the only people I see displaying flags and wearing crosses right now are race-baiting neanderthals - an aesthetic that millions of us would absolutely seek to avoid being associated with in the present climate.

So no, I won't be putting a flag up or eating a Vicky Sponge, BUT if you want to know why we're not celebrating St George's Day, maybe you should start by asking your Nan, because she wasn't celebrating it in her youth either!

dudsville · 23/04/2026 21:15

I don't know why I'm commenting here, but this is my response to your thread op. Personally, I believe everyone has the right to feel proud of where they come from. Not so much because of what their country has done or produces, but because of the land, where families are raised, friendships born, hopes lived out. The culture and traditions, etc., There are errors in your post, but of course, everyone has a right to feel proud of where they come from.

What may perhaps be getting confused is this pride I'm describing here, versus a kind of hyper defensive brittle notion of pride, one that can be frightening, closing down, shutting out others right to also feel pride, and safe.

Are you serious? 😂You don't think the Irish make much of a fuss about St Patrick's Day?

St Andrew's Day is a public holiday in Scotland.

Whereas what is St George's Day in England? Something English people are made to feel foolish, grubby, racist or imperialist for wanting to recognise. St Patrick's Day you can buy a stupid hat, join a big parade and get pissed at 11am in the morning and no-one cares. It's all great fun, apparently. A cultural treasure.

Whereas with St George's Day you should feel thoroughly embarrassed and a bit stupid for even wanting to acknowledge it. The responses on this thread are proof of that.

Most Irish people use St Patrick's Day to bring people together around the world.

Whereas many Englishmen use it to make their own non-white nationals feel like they don't belong.

The celebration in London for St George's Day look like great fun. People want to be part of that, they don't want to be part of Tommy Robinson type nationalism.

CharlotteByrde · 23/04/2026 21:15

Scots are well aware St Andrews was from Galilee. He could hardly have been a pal of Jesus if he'd been living in Glasgow.

toswitchornottoswitch · 23/04/2026 21:16

Every year we have a parade in our town- we just celebrate it at the weekend. The high street is pedestrianised, and all the local schools, brownies / guides, sports clubs join in the parade. We have flag waving, choirs singing, dance shows, craft stalls, mini rides - the works! A full celebration of the community. Is always packed!! A highlight of the year

I’ve seen loads of these types of posts today and yet none of these people have got off their arses and planned a party! If you want one plan it. If nobody wants to come to your party it’s probably not because parties themselves have been banned 🤔

Exactly this. All these fucking patriots are only patriotic with their arses glued to their sofas.

Even the flag shaggers ordered them and then went out and hung them up.

There is no disgrace in the English flag. It’s hardly a fucking swastika.

That depends how it’s used.

FFS

I haven’t actually seen any posts about St George’s Day one way or the other.

But honestly? I’m sure St George’s Day wasn’t celebrated when I was young - it feels really forced and not really the national tradition at all. It isn’t our national day in any way, because it’s just not something that was ever really celebrated.

Bonfire Night seems like more a real tradition - albeit it relates to a Scottish king and I think is celebrated in the rest of the UK too. Maybe we just don’t have a national day - would that be so awful? I’ve never felt the lack of one!

Maybe it’s like the Spanish having no words to their national anthem?

CarbonAtom · 23/04/2026 21:20

All of your points are true but your history is lacking if you think Britain was the worst. You may know that the majority of the world has been involved in slavery at some point. Parts of Africa are still at it.

I'm sure you are also noting that Britain was also a colony for centuries.

I'm sure none of that matters to you though.

We can just brush over the fact that Britain created the modern world, leading in engineering , research and education

It is a minority of English people. Also those comments aren't limited to English. Seen plenty of Irish comment about migrants celebrating the day in Dublin in a derogatory way. Think those sort of attitudes are in a minority all over the place.

TonicGinIceFruit · 23/04/2026 21:21

If you want a party, throw one? My father in law loves to mouth off about how “if I celebrate St George’s Day I will be seen as a racist” but he never actually does anything for it 😂
I’ve told him several times no one is stopping him flying the English flag or having a party, same as no one stops a St Patrick’s Day party or whatever else!!!

Loub1987 · 23/04/2026 21:21

Be proud of what you did not where you were arbitrarily born. What have you done OP? Celebrate that.

Piccante · 23/04/2026 21:22

Yawn

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/04/2026 21:23

I don’t think anyone is seriously saying “Britain/ England is the worst country ever and therefore can’t celebrate”. There’s no “worst country ever” - but if there is we’d clearly be joint honours with (to name a few) Russia, Germany, France, Spain and many others all over the world.
