Aibu To be annoyed about so many Facebook posts about celebrating st George's day being racist. No one post this for st Patrick's day, st Andrew's or st David's.... Hogmanay and burns night have parties

By celebrating being English, passing democracy to the world, Shakespeare, Agatha Christie, TV, the jet engine, the internet... railways, the industrial revolution, beer, the Beatles... All should be celebrated.

Yes we did some shite things...but white slavery (20+ million), the Holocaust, programs in Eastern Europe. King Leopold of Belgium hunting African people. The depopulation of parts of the USSR, the ethnic cleansing of Bosnia.....all things that in the last 125 years England has nothing to do with...yet people like to think that we who celebrate our Englishness are scum.

Most people just aren't arsed either way. That's my experience anyway. In real life. On social media, the people I've seen making a point of marking the day have been what Reform types would dismiss as woke liberal lefties. I know that's because of the kind of accounts I follow. I'm not interested in manufactured outrage about how you're not allowed to be English any more. Anyone with half a brain can see it's bollocks.

AuntChippy · 23/04/2026 20:21

Why not go and drape a few flags from lampposts in your local area, OP? I gather painting a mini roundabout in red and white is de riguer for patriots like you.

ColdAsAWitches · 23/04/2026 20:22

Apart from the other mistakes others have pointed out, you think beer is uniquely English?

UncannyFanny · 23/04/2026 20:23

I think it’s lovely that you want to celebrate a Turkish saint. Very multi cultural of you 😃

Namingbaba · 23/04/2026 20:23

Lndnmummy · 23/04/2026 20:20

There is no way, anyone will see that disgrace of a flag and feel welcome as a stranger. (Said very much as a stranger).
What is it you feel the need to celebrate exactly? Slavery? The Monarchy? Colonialism? Brexit?

Are you the OP trying to prove her point?

ColdAsAWitches · 23/04/2026 20:24

And out of curiosity, if English people are second class citizens, who are the first class citizens?

Can I point out that slavery wasn't restricted to the English? Pretty much everyone practiced slavery (even the Irish. St Patrick was a slave from Britain) even for example the SNP like to whitewash the Scottish part in it.

To be fair it is some of the best.

TeenLifeMum · 23/04/2026 20:26

We were a bunch of empire building bastards and the racists have claimed our flag so it’s hard to see it as a positive thing at the moment.

Comments like this actually prove the OPs point. Personally I would support St Edmund being patron saint of England but I imagine you might take the piss out of that too.

Just the English? Maybe the Scots shouldn't celebrate theirs either considering their role in the empire. Oh yeah apparently they didn't do anything...

BigYellowBus · 23/04/2026 20:27

Is that you,Nigel? You do know that there was a big St George's Day celebration in Trafalgar Square, as there is every year. And that absolutely nobody thinks it's racist

It's the racist people hijacking St Georges day and flag, it is our day not their day! We don't need or want them. It would be the same if they hijacked the Scottish flag or the Irish flag and tried to tie it to a racist ideology. Design your own flag for your nasty ideology.

DripDripAprilshower · 23/04/2026 20:28

It’s amazing the amount of people who never bothered mentioning it before are now obsessed with it.

St George has been celebrated for over 500 years so nothing to do with any of the things you mentioned.

Coffeeandbooks88 · 23/04/2026 20:28

Also St Andrew has no link to Scotland so why celebrate him either? 🤷

Lndnmummy · 23/04/2026 20:29

Sure, you can point that out. 'It wasn't just us X Y Z did it too' isn't an argument I tend to use though.

Endofyear · 23/04/2026 20:29

I have never seen a post saying it's racist to celebrate St George's Day. I think it's the same confected outrage as people who say we're not allowed to say Christmas any more 🙄 it's just nonsense! The vast majority of people in England are English so how on earth are they second class citizens?

Turkey wasn't even a place when st George was birn. It was Anatolia. And a few other countries have claimed him as their patron saint.

Pootles34 · 23/04/2026 20:31

Nonsense. I'm a middle class leftie, my child will be in the st George's day parade on Sunday with scouts, in a very middle class area. Ps stay off Facebook - it's just rage bait these days

Just pointing out inaccuracies. Continue to be obtuse if you want. One day some nations like Scotland might stop acting like victims and admit to their part in slavery and colonialism. Talking about the SNP obviously.
