Aibu To be annoyed about so many Facebook posts about celebrating st George's day being racist. No one post this for st Patrick's day, st Andrew's or st David's.... Hogmanay and burns night have parties

By celebrating being English, passing democracy to the world, Shakespeare, Agatha Christie, TV, the jet engine, the internet... railways, the industrial revolution, beer, the Beatles... All should be celebrated.

Yes we did some shite things...but white slavery (20+ million), the Holocaust, programs in Eastern Europe. King Leopold of Belgium hunting African people. The depopulation of parts of the USSR, the ethnic cleansing of Bosnia.....all things that in the last 125 years England has nothing to do with...yet people like to think that we who celebrate our Englishness are scum.

The idea upthread about a bank holiday for St Georges Day. We could scrap the May holidays, have one for St G and a new one end of Sept/early Oct. It would space them out better. Perhaps move Aug Holiday back to first weekend.
Any support?

I would be happy with an extra bank holiday, rather than a swap of dates

Depends why they've got the flag up, is it because it's football season, st George's party, fine do whatever don't care, crack on. Why would I care about the size of their garden?
If they're doing it behind the guise of 'pride,' but then commenting that someone isn't really English because of the colour of their skin, despite the fact they've lived here their whole lives, comment on every Facebook post that we wouldn't have any problems in this country if we stopped the boats etc. then yer I'll assume it's cause they're a racist twat. Do you disagree?

And how do you know that by driving past someone's home?
You sound very judgmental - as you have stated- people can fly the flag for many reasons- national pride being one of them.
You know literally nothing about any of them - unless you actually know them in person... and yet you're judging them as being a racist.
But that's OK- you stand there on your moral high ground. Crack on, as you say.

Most of the Temu flags around here have blown off the lampposts, the ones that are left are a filthy ragged mess.
Nothing like littering to show pride in your country

…we had St George’s stuff round here yesterday, and there is some big thing over the weekend - nobody thinks it’s racist

You would think if they have pride they would litter pick the flags.

I was in Brighton last week and some locals were spending their own time litter picking on the beach.

I admire that sort of pride in Britain.

IAmBeaIDrinkTea · Yesterday 12:03

And how do you know that by driving past someone's home?

That's the problem, isn't it - racist twats co opting the flag.

I mean I can assume anyone who sprays a roundabout, because they're so 'proud' they couldn't stop themselves is an absolute moron and I think I would be right 100% of the time. I've never been so proud of something I needed to go graffiti a public space
I'm not sure who I've been judgemental about on my previous posts except the racist twats, I'm more than happy to be considered judgemental of those people, they deserve that
You haven't actually said what pars of my posts are actually judgemental. I've no problems with our flag, but I do disagree with racist people trying to weaponise it to make other people feel unwelcome because of the colour of their skin.

If you are truly just proud to be English and of the English flag, you should be just as insulted about the misuse of the flag for unsavoury reasons?
Do you go past the graffitied roundabouts and feel a sense of pride?

BlakeCarrington · Yesterday 12:13

But we’re not talking about witnessing people spray painting roundabouts @Cherriesandapples1, obviously they are twats. We’re talking about people with flags up in their garden and you assuming they’re racist for that reason only. Patriotism = racism
according to your posts and I think that’s a very prejudiced and classist stance.

Same, as nothing says "I'm proud of my country and love where I live" better than graffitiing your local area and making it look an absolute state 🙄😁

I never mentioned roundabouts.
I asked you specifically how you judged someone flying a flag in their own garden.

You seem fixated on mini-roundabouts.

I didn't say any person who had a flag up in their garden was a racist twat if you read my actual posts. No issue with people having them up for normal reasons, football, St George's Day, war anniversaries, coronation celebrations etc. But I disapprove of the use by said racist twats to try cause division and hide behind 'I'm proud to be English ' and spouting racist crap. If they've always loved having the English flag up in their garden because they enjoy having it there, no problem, if there's no hidden meaning. But I think it's fairly obvious that there has been an influx of the racist's trying to use it a sign of intolerance. I think people need to be angrier at the people trying to weaponise the flags
I'm also not sure what 'classist' and 'prejudiced' comments I've made. I'm working class, raised by a single mother, I was lucky enough to live in an area with diversity and learn about other cultures and religions and be tolerant. I am happy to stand up against people who are trying to cause division in this country who spout horrible nonsense about people who don't deserve it. I don't think patriotism = racism but I do think there are racists that justify their views by hiding behind patriotism

Indeed.
So rather than stop flying it for fear of being called racist... we should be flying it more.

A lot of roundabout painters and garden flag wavers are one and the same.
That's the problem.

😂 except for all the bits where I haven't talked about roundabouts and answered the questions that were asked.
Interesting that the previous poster didn't answer the question about why I am meant to care about the size of the garden
And why you can't tell me why I am classist or prejudiced.
"We see you' ... Bit stalkery 😂

italianlondongirl · Yesterday 12:33

I suppose we in England don’t celebrate the 23rd April as much (at all)), because unlike in Ireland or Scotland, it’s not a national holiday.
Probably if we got the day off, there would be more parties etc.
I agree with the smugness of those who “remind” others that St George wasn’t born in England … they say it as if it’s a completely original and previously unknown fact.
However as PPs mention, St Andrew wasn’t Scottish and st Patrick wasn’t Irish…..

Are they?
I very much doubt the owners of the houses I see flying flags are out painting roundabouts on housing estates in their spare time...
Are we thinking that every pub landlord or owner of a country manor is also racist and out painting roundabouts ?

Again... HOW THE ABSOLUTE FUCK DO YOU KNOW WHY SOMEONE CHOOSES TO FLY A FLAG?

You ASSUME and ACCUSE racism...on the basis of what? Your OWN prejudice...

I assume racism where their comments and actions show it.

BlakeCarrington · Yesterday 12:41

Spot on @Paganpentacle. There is no way all these judgemental posters could possibly know why people are flying the St George’s flag in their OWN GARDENS on St George’s day. Many posters immediately assume racism. That’s because those posters are prejudiced themselves and make lazy assumptions. You can see it all over this thread. Very sad.

No, you don’t get to turn your classism and bigotry around on others. You assume racism any time you see innocent patriotism and them demonise people for it. Usually aimed at the working classes. We see you.

Except I'd already said I wouldn't judge a person for flying the flag for St George's day. But you both seem to be most annoyed I'm not upset by our flag, as long as it's secured safely and being used for reasons that aren't racist

Point out the classism in my posts if you'd like to discuss
