English people are second class citizens

Aibu To be annoyed about so many Facebook posts about celebrating st George's day being racist. No one post this for st Patrick's day, st Andrew's or st David's.... Hogmanay and burns night have parties

By celebrating being English, passing democracy to the world, Shakespeare, Agatha Christie, TV, the jet engine, the internet... railways, the industrial revolution, beer, the Beatles... All should be celebrated.

Yes we did some shite things...but white slavery (20+ million), the Holocaust, programs in Eastern Europe. King Leopold of Belgium hunting African people. The depopulation of parts of the USSR, the ethnic cleansing of Bosnia.....all things that in the last 125 years England has nothing to do with...yet people like to think that we who celebrate our Englishness are scum.

No it's ignorant English people I take issue with and you are ignorant.

I wouldn't rise to her. She's admitted she's on a wind up.

So you're just on a wind up. At least you admit it.

Of course I am. I said that yesterday. Its a MN thread not the United Nations. And its a silly thread. We are all British and so I find this outrage from any component nation ridiculous really.

I did not at any point insult English people as a whole, only you for the ignorant and arrogant behaviour you've displayed.

Plenty of Scottish people I know have what would be described as RP/smart accents that are indistinguishable from an English person's accent. Or accents from the country they originated from. You don't seem to be very aware of the people in your own country?

Very few Scottish people other than the very upper class don't sound Scottish.

And if they "originated" from another country presumably meaning not actually born in Scotland then how are they Scottish?

TheHateIsNotGood · Yesterday 11:28

So it's actually a Scottish Pie and not a Scotch Pie and a Scotttish Egg, not Scotch Egg. And heaven forfend anyone refers to a glass of whisky as some Scotch and not a glass of Scottish.

You are being rather grand about ghastly people like me daring to insult Scottish people by calling them Scotch. That's real national dignity being upheld. Its impressive.

Scotch eggs? Scotch broth, scotch whisky

Edited

In Scotland whisky is just whisky, no adjective required.

Ah yes a true show of pride, painting roundabouts, ensuring more council tax is spent to clean up their graffiti.
It's fine to celebrate at George's day if you wish, but it's not mandatory. I couldn't care less about it. I can like being English, I can also accept we have done bad things to other countries in the past but we also have done very positive things also. Most countries have a complex past. What I am ashamed of is the quantity racist twats masquerading as just having pride in the country, moaning that we're the victim of 'wokeness' and we're not allowed to be proud. We are allowed to be proud, no-one cares.

And you know they are racist twats how?
By flying a flag?
Does that go for every person all over the world flying the flag of their nation ... or just English people flying the St George's Cross?

Yes posh Scots. Not necessarily upper class as many are middle class

Are you suggesting that people who have "foreign" accents or who werent born in Scotland arent Scottish? Controversial....

The ones protesting asylum hotels trying to set it on fire whilst saying they're trying to protect women and girls, the ones who themselves had been convicted of domestic abuse towards women and girls. The ones who stand behind tommy Robinson/yaxley-lennon whatever you want to call him and his mate tommo who I believe is in legal trouble at the moment for possibly abusing a vulnerable person. Them racist twats are the ones I'm ashamed of
Like I've said before I don't mind the English flag, come football season in people's windows, at the pub, properly attached in places with the council's consent. Not graffitied by the village idiot or attached at half mast up a lamppost ready to fly off into the road with the slightest gust. These people are using the image of the English flag, not to celebrate England but to try make people they don't believe fit into their definition of 'british' to feel unwelcome.
I like England, I like our diversity, unlike some of our traditions. But I do not like the new wave of apparent 'english pride' which is anything but

If more than 10% of posters here know what a demonym is, I would be mildly surprised. And if more than 5% can deduce the meaning from the Greek I would be impressed.

So where do you stand on people flying a flag in their garden then?
How do you judge them?
Is it by garden size?
Do you pop in and check hard drives or political party membership before you decide whether they are racists, or is the national flag on its own enough?

Depends why they've got the flag up, is it because it's football season, st George's party, fine do whatever don't care, crack on. Why would I care about the size of their garden?
If they're doing it behind the guise of 'pride,' but then commenting that someone isn't really English because of the colour of their skin, despite the fact they've lived here their whole lives, comment on every Facebook post that we wouldn't have any problems in this country if we stopped the boats etc. then yer I'll assume it's cause they're a racist twat. Do you disagree?

BlakeCarrington · Yesterday 11:51

AuntChippy · 23/04/2026 20:21

Why not go and drape a few flags from lampposts in your local area, OP? I gather painting a mini roundabout in red and white is de riguer for patriots like you.

Again, what a bigoted and condescending post. People are allowed to be proud of their country without being racist. The sneering condescension on this thread suggesting any patriotism is racist is really sad.

BlakeCarrington · Yesterday 11:53

Why did my post get deleted MN. I was supporting people’s right to celebrate St George’s day without being ridiculed and called racist. Why is that a problem to MN?

MyFellowScroller · Yesterday 11:53

The idea upthread about a bank holiday for St Georges Day. We could scrap the May holidays, have one for St G and a new one end of Sept/early Oct. It would space them out better. Perhaps move Aug Holiday back to first weekend.
Any support?

ExtraOnions · Yesterday 11:57

Most of the Temu flags around here have blown off the lampposts, the ones that are left are a filthy ragged mess.
Nothing like littering to show pride in your country

…we had St George’s stuff round here yesterday, and there is some big thing over the weekend - nobody thinks it’s racist

Also an old person originally from industrial Lanarkshire and I've literally never heard a Scottish person use the word Scotch to describe anything. Not saying it didn't happen in your family but highly unusual.

You might well be right. Was just my experience. Never did a survey!
