Aibu To be annoyed about so many Facebook posts about celebrating st George's day being racist. No one post this for st Patrick's day, st Andrew's or st David's.... Hogmanay and burns night have parties

By celebrating being English, passing democracy to the world, Shakespeare, Agatha Christie, TV, the jet engine, the internet... railways, the industrial revolution, beer, the Beatles... All should be celebrated.

Yes we did some shite things...but white slavery (20+ million), the Holocaust, programs in Eastern Europe. King Leopold of Belgium hunting African people. The depopulation of parts of the USSR, the ethnic cleansing of Bosnia.....all things that in the last 125 years England has nothing to do with...yet people like to think that we who celebrate our Englishness are scum.

There's going to be a parade and a church service attended by Guides, Scouts, Cubs, Brownies in pretty much every town in.the country this Sunday. That's how we've always celebrated St George's day, I've never heard of a St George's Day Party.

Scouts and guides all over the world organise Sr George's day events.

We didn't but American, India, Australia just to name a few countries that are democratic because of the English...so well over a billion people get to vote because of England

Bollocks. America and India got to vote because they threw off English rule.

"British" rule. Not just English.

Why would you get something deliberately wrong when you could get it right? It's a matter of basic respect, the term is Scottish. Also why would you want to bait Scottish people, while banging on about the alleged joys of being English and how practically no one wants to celebrate them?

Personally I think it's nationality envy. In Scotland the thing that unites us all is our being Scottish. We have also forged a type of nationalism that is actually pretty inclusive. If you have a Scottish accent you are automatically one of us and no one gives a flying fuck about your skin colour or where your grandparents came from. Our flag is still a symbol of pride not something used as symbol of hate.

Pretty much anywhere you go in the English speaking world and beyond, people are friendly when they find out you are Scottish. The exception to this is, ironically the south of England. I've had my accent understood with no problem from Iceland to Australia, but in London apparently I am no longer speaking English.

Maybe that's why Scottish people don't like ignorant English people getting the name of their nationality wrong!

Also when does teasing become bullying?

old person originally born in very working class area of Glasgow. I remember lots of my relatives using the term scotch to describe themselves. Didn’t realise I should be objecting to it until I was older.

And we arent allowed to be proud of a nationality or fly our own flag for fear of being called racists

Yes, we are. Don't be ridiculous. I'm proud to be English, the racist twats don't speak for me and I can still be proud despite them.
If we're not allowed to fly our own flag, why have I seen it flying atop local churches for St George's Day?
Or maybe you're referring to those scratty efforts that are tied loosely to lampposts causing a hazard and put up by morons (which a lot of them are) to make some kind of point about "England for the English!" (Whatever that means)

I don't know. I don't have any hang ups about flags and being English so I can't speak for the mentality of those that do.

"banging on about the alleged joys of being English and how practically no one wants to celebrate them?" When have I done that?

Bullying?? By calling someone Scotch? Have the Scotch become so frail?? Not the ones I have in my family or any that I know!

This thread is so funny.

The fact you gain amusement from insulting other nationalities says all anyone needs to know about you as a person.

That is deliberately twisting what I said and clearly not what I meant.

Have yourself a party then. Wave your flag, paint a few roundabouts.

You can be proud of your country of birth you know - its not a crime.

Also an old person originally from industrial Lanarkshire and I've literally never heard a Scottish person use the word Scotch to describe anything. Not saying it didn't happen in your family but highly unusual.

If English people want to celebrate their national ( Turkish) saint then they should! Get off your holes and do it - why are you leaving it to the right wingers to hijack?
You could start with petitioning for a national bank holiday the way Scotland and the island Ireland have. St Patrick’s Day in Ireland is a lovely family day, everyone off and enjoying the holiday.

No, I said people with Scottish accents were accepted as being Scottish regardless of ancestry. Nowhere did I say Scottish people without were not. Though I'm curious as to why if you are Scottish you wouldn't sound it?

Plenty of Scottish people I know have what would be described as RP/smart accents that are indistinguishable from an English person's accent. Or accents from the country they originated from. You don't seem to be very aware of the people in your own country?

I mean that's fine that you have something going on near you, but I don't. I just looked on a local newspaper and they have a webpage of st Georges day events, a neighbouring town is having a fair (which I didn't actually realize, maybe they do that and we do the maypole), there were a couple pubs, a church event but not much. If I compare to say bonfire night, there would have been 30+ events listed. I'm not saying it's wrong to celebrate St Georges day, I just don't think traditionally it's something that people have particularly done.

Oh it's been done here for 25 years plus that I know of

Theres also the village fetes with maypole dancers etc

We only have one firework display in the town so it's not" more"

Ah yes a true show of pride, painting roundabouts, ensuring more council tax is spent to clean up their graffiti.
It's fine to celebrate at George's day if you wish, but it's not mandatory. I couldn't care less about it. I can like being English, I can also accept we have done bad things to other countries in the past but we also have done very positive things also. Most countries have a complex past. What I am ashamed of is the quantity racist twats masquerading as just having pride in the country, moaning that we're the victim of 'wokeness' and we're not allowed to be proud. We are allowed to be proud, no-one cares.
