Is Kier Starmer a liar?

Is Kier Starmer a liar - yes or no?

It's a simple question. I can't see this on the trending threads, so asking the question.

YABU: He reliant on civil servants to share information and is in the clear, he didn't know what he didn't know.
YANBU: He's the Prime Minister. Who happens to get briefings and knew.

I'm on the fence about the Mandelson issue but he's told plenty of lies about other things. All of them do. So, yes, he's probably lying about this too.

Totally agree with this.

Guidanceplease20 · 20/04/2026 20:03

No, hes not.

Hes also a barrister and ethical codes will be in his genetics.

Have he, and Reeves, made some poor choices. Yes, they have. Hes also made one particularly good one of late - being measured in response to Trump.

These political games being played by others is just noise and given the current world issues, dangerous noise, and they dont seem to care. Ive more time for Starmer, not less, given that.

Edited

He's a barrister? He's never mentioned it.

@catspyjamas1

Who is the honest, non lying politician you would like to see as PM?

Northermcharn · 20/04/2026 21:47

He lies about the fact he thinks some women can have a penis.

1dayatatime · 20/04/2026 21:49

So Sir Keir states that the Foreign Office civil service withheld information from him that Mandelson had failed the security vetting.

I agree that this seems strange and unusual but without any evidence to the contrary, I can't see how posters can claim that Sir Keir is lying.

You know you've touched a nerve when people resort to wanging on about spelling rather than the issue you've raise a question about.. You're winning.. Unlike Kier, Raynor et al..

Dexternight · 20/04/2026 21:50

What was the reason he failed?

Dollymylove · 20/04/2026 21:50

Locutus2000 · 20/04/2026 21:41

Keir famously can't stand the bloke.

Oh aye

Good question. I'd consider Kemi and Burnham right now.

If he hadn't failed, why were mitigation put in place about which organisations he wasnt allowed to meet with without supervision?

How can the UK have someone in that position that cannot be trusted?

Why has a man who started the job 2 days after Mandleson was confirmed in post, blamed for this error?

His jaw dropping lack of curiosity betrays his calculated ignorance in the face of appointing a man who had been forced to retire from government twice and who had documented and widely known links to Epstein following his conviction for trafficking and if that wasn't enough to tip the pm off, whose nickname was the Prince of Darkness - to the highest diplomatic office.

Do I think that Keir can argue that he was blindly and innocently following procedure with absolutely no policial instinct or due diligence, perhaps...but his lack of judgement will be enough to see his downfall.

Oh he definitely lacks any real political instinct. That was Morgan McSweeney’s job and without McSweeney, Starmer is effectively rudderless. However, McSweeney dropped a bollock (and then some) by pushing for Mandelson to get the ambassador role. Diane Abbott and John McDonnell, who I concede are no ‘friends’ to Starmer’s administration, were correct with their contributions today. I fully believe Starmer was warned by long-serving MPs about Mandelson but failed to take heed.
Anyone with even a passing interest in politics would have realised Mandelson was damaged goods and the risk of it ending in tears again was very high.

There is an argument that Starmer was easily led by the likes of McSweeney. I can’t see how that really helps his cause though. Who appointed McSweeney?

Did anyone else note that leaked “lines to take” document given to Labour MPs today, which The Times’ Chief Political Correspondent shared just before the statement, proved to be accurate? Alison Gardner and Lola McEvoy were among the Labour MPs who read suggested questions on that out, practically word-for-word.

I like Burnham too

Kemi just plays political games. Theres no depth to her thinking. With the global sitiation we currently have she would be out of her depth.

Clavinova · 20/04/2026 21:54

I'm not convinced I believe Starmer's claim that had he known, he would not have gone ahead with the appointment. So much information about Mandelson appears to have been in the public domain already, re Mandelson's dealings with Epstein, China, Russia ... what more info did Starmer need to know?

Also, Starmer didn't give a satisfactory answer as to why he ignored Simon Case's advice - suggesting a political appointee should get security clearance before being announced as the PM's choice. The announcement was made before the vetting process had even started.

MNLurker1345 · 20/04/2026 21:56

Keir Starmer obviously has to be diplomatic in what he says and he was at the height of diplomacy in the HoCs today.

All politicians lie. My DH would call it muddied water.

But what is noticeable is no mention of McSweeny or of Lammy.

Whether he is lying or not he is willing to try amd take the hit. Because he is invincible.
