Are there any genuine threads left?

I mean I started one about my cat but she's been fed now so the crisis is more or less over. So despite the genuine high drama of that one, I dont see many threads which seem genuine and fulfilling?

I'm on a nice one about bonkers imaginary things/bonkers things we do. I don't think any of us are trolls- I'm definitely not!

SerendipityCat · 20/04/2026 20:34

@AccordingToWhom I'm probably too naive for my own good, but I haven't come across many obvious fetish threads apart from a brief appearance from the canvas footwear weirdo, and a frankly pathetic late-night dick pic like a stubby little candle.
I did once report someone for having some bizarre encounters with fruit, of all things; She apparently found random pieces of fruit on her car tyres under the wheel arches, there were kids kicking melons in the park instead of footballs when she was walking the dog, her own kids were throwing fruit around the garden... It was just too much fruit-related drama, and was decidedly odd. No doubt a psychiatrist could have made something of it!

Ohhh the plimsoll troll, right? What a weirdo.

What annoys me is that you cant say that on the thread. You get cancelled and deleted

I think that’s the right approach. Many threads are clearly not made up, it’s just that some posters can’t think outside their own experience and call it fake.

LindorDoubleChoc · 20/04/2026 20:45

To answer your question OP: I reckon less than 50% of threads are genuine on Mumsnet now. I'm not here enough to really analyse it, but just going by the number of threads I delete from Active Convos or scroll past rolling my eyes. Having been here almost daily for 20 years I think my radar is fairly reliable.

Charlottapannacotta · 20/04/2026 20:46

I started one about fine hair tools with virtually no response which I guess is maybe en because people think I’m going to advertise one ?! I’m really not. Just got thin hair and no styling skill to speak of. I also did one on what was broken in your house which I promise is genuine and it did really well and really helped me feel better that I wasn’t the only one ignoring annoying things. I need to update that to say I had finally got new fridge door inserts that aren’t cracked !

ARKane · 20/04/2026 20:54

SheilaWilde · 20/04/2026 20:17

@AccordingToWhom I think you win the thread by using the word ‘egregious’. Good work. I know you can’t win a thread but still.

I think @MMBaranova had it with “extruded”.

Error404FucksNotFound · 20/04/2026 20:55

There's a reason troll threads are so many. People love to interact with them. They like the drama. The engagement encourages the trolls.

Nobody wants to chat about the price of a piece of fish, they want to be there in real time, an army of poetry composing aunties, as a downtrodden daughter in law throws her mil over her shoulder, strides down the road and drops her into the canal while uttering a devestating putdown the likes of which the world has never heard before.

Forums are entertainment and more people want Eastenders than want Points Of View.

LindorDoubleChoc · 20/04/2026 20:55

Btw are you likely but usual?

Gloriia · 20/04/2026 20:59

Just report any obviously stupid ones and the ones that are possibly embellished generate debate anyway so it's not all lost.

It's the internet op, don't take it all too seriously.

GlobalTravellerbutespeciallyBognor · 20/04/2026 21:05

HumerousHumous · 20/04/2026 19:07

Can I just ask, genuine question, but how do you spot made up threads and as per a pp know that 90% are not real? I must be gullible but apart from the obviously odd ones I have assumed these are real posters. What are the signs. Perhaps I have not been on here long enough (2013)!

Subject matter - often involving the usual MN trigger subjects directly or tangentially

Drip feeding critical information as things develop

Dubious false-sounding generic responses to any personal message you send the OP

Inconsistent posting - sometimes they catch themselves out and scrabble to
delete

But overall you will probably feel if it is fake.
Since I started posting on MN a few months ago, I would estimate that most of the relationship or WWYD style threads are false. That’s not to say they aren’t entertaining or helpful.

VivaciousCurrentBun · 20/04/2026 21:12

The worst troll poster was at least a decade ago maybe much longer. She wrote how she had given birth but not known she was PG. A prolific poster and was outed eventually but I missed that drama at the actual time. Back then people believed anything these days at least many are cynical.

Truth is often is stranger than fiction but as long as it is not upsetting or people offer money or assistance, then what does it matter.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 20/04/2026 21:16

likelysuspect · 20/04/2026 20:08

I love the imaginary dogs.

Hilarious.

Should be more like that, I havent got a problem with those.

I agree. That's a great thread.
Particularly when the humourless come along every so often to say "What does it matter?" and "Why do you care?"

🤣

cantgardenintherain · 20/04/2026 21:25

I’m also over those threads with a ridiculous AIBU, which everyone would already know was unreasonable. Along the lines of “DH keeps looking down women’s blouses when we’re out. It makes me feel uncomfortable. AIBU? He thinks he should be able to , and that o should ignore it.“ Yeah, right.

I remember a ‘post a pic of your bedroom’ thread where one poster Crumbs tried to pass off a picture of a posh hotel room as her bedroom. I thought it might be a joke but it turns out she was serious.

I don’t know. Did your cat need to pee, poo or wear socks? Have I forgotten anything? I do a bit of safeguarding work with vulnerable adults and I’m at the point tof sending them here and saying ‘this stuff? weird. think twice before engaging’

Oh god dont misunderstand this thread, I dont take things seriously at all. Im on many a thread explaining its not serious, that its entertainment. Many of the threads that seem to infuriate others, I find great entertainment.

I was just musing. As I do.

Given up. Doesnt seem to work

MN love a drama as they get clicks.

I thought there was supposed to be a move towards kinder posts an removing the arsey type ones. The goady, attitudy OPs who clearly start threads for a fight. One recently was so awful with so much abuse from the OP. But it got responses so it stayed

I disagree with 2 things on forums (well this one, not on any others), one is calling out bullshit ( I dont use the T word as I see it as infantile) and one is correcting peoples SPAG (including my own)

I dont really see whats wrong with those things.

OMG correcting people’s SPAG is an utterly wanky thing to do to someone.

Imagine being really bad at it all throughout your childhood and adult life.

Then you pop onto a chat forum either with a problem or just to pass the time, and yet another ‘do good’ asshole (maybe the fourth or fifth that day), wants to play teacher 🙄

Just leave them alone as long as you can understand what they’re saying.

I didnt say I corrected anyone.

I wouldnt have a problem with someone correcting mine

The majority of people dont know so would be helped by being corrected.

Troll tinfoilers are more annoying than trolls themselves and you deserve to get cancelled and deleted. What are the chances that person is genuinely in crisis and you're just accusing them of lying because your life is so uneventful that you believe Nothing Ever Happens?

pizzaHeart · 20/04/2026 21:51

I don’t know, some threads are a bit weird but the most threads look absolutely fine for me.
I started thread about problem with my apple tree yesterday. I can reassure you - it’s very real problem in my house atm 🙂

oh yeah, that's right. I've seen women posting about their husbands and children dying and about half the comments are calling them liars. I mean so what if its a troll, if its not then you're just giving shit to someone in an situation you couldn't even comprehend
