Are there any genuine threads left?

I mean I started one about my cat but she's been fed now so the crisis is more or less over. So despite the genuine high drama of that one, I dont see many threads which seem genuine and fulfilling?

There's always the option of reporting threads you don't think are genuine.

Given up. Doesnt seem to work

You know, I was just this evening wondering that. I flick though threads and doubt the truth of most of them, in one way or another. It’s almost at the “don’t bother” stage.

ilovesooty · 20/04/2026 19:49

AccordingToWhom · 20/04/2026 19:45

That isn't always successful. I honestly think at this point MN HQ don't care as long as it drives traffic.

Edited

Well, you're not supposed to troll hunt on the thread, so reporting is the only option if you don't want to be deleted.

Riapia · 20/04/2026 19:50

MN may not be perfect but it’s probably the best place to ask for advice. There are people out there that will really try to give good advice.
Yes we know that there are some keyboard warriors who will take delight in others misfortunes but it’s worth ignoring them.
😉.

DripDripAprilshower · 20/04/2026 19:50

Most people just make up something about accidentally logging into their husbands email account and finding messages from woman half his age.

cantgardenintherain · 20/04/2026 19:50

ILoveDuckDuckGo · 20/04/2026 19:34

Yep, I agree. In addition to the trolls you have to consider, chat bot political manipulation and sedition, which is dominant in the Middle east conflict and other current affairs topics.
You see people arguing with a bot farm, this is insane.

And the anti NHS threads. Plenty of those look dodgy to anyone who works or has worked in the NHS.

Well I see this as mindless pastime so probably cant even complain, but I use 'active' as the way to look at whats going on. So countless of them are clearly bullshit and those are interspersed with 'sponsored by mumsnet' threads which arent threads

So its either do something more interesting like the housework, or continue to chunter on about how rubbish it all is and eat chocolate

I think, weighing up all the pros on and cons, I will do the latter.

I disagree with 2 things on forums (well this one, not on any others), one is calling out bullshit ( I dont use the T word as I see it as infantile) and one is correcting peoples SPAG (including my own)

I dont really see whats wrong with those things.

I’ve often wondered whether there are threads started for commercial purposes… and then a few people will chime in with recommendations for the same thing, and I always think they might be fake, and just set up as a form of advertising, by a marketing dept somewhere. And I also wonder whether the threads that ask a question that means you will post on there if you meet the criteria, are also set up for some sort of advertising / data-scraping exercise.. eg the sort of thread that asks ‘if you have a salary over £100k do you do x, y or Z?’…

There's certain brands that always get mentioned whenever someone asks for a recommendation for something. I think those companies clearly have lurkers on here to post for that purpose. Great job - I could do that as a WFH one. I know it's always happened but they're brands no-one in real life ever seems to mention.

Yes I know. I'm saying there is no point in reporting them most of the time so it's not really much of an option.

I think I'm missing something because I genuinely don't understand what the point of a fake or AI thread would be. Just for attention? People who are really bored?

I agree. Why would you want to invent a story for the sake of it?

I still think there are really helpful, knowledgeable people here. But do not use AIBU if you want serious responses. That, in itself, is almost a sign of made-upness.

There are so few threads in Active I can be arsed to even click on.

AccordingToWhom · 20/04/2026 19:56

I think they get a thrill out of stringing people along.

Random321 · 20/04/2026 19:57

I must be terribly naive as I only think about 20% or so are bullshit or trolling.

SerendipityCat · 20/04/2026 20:01

It's the manufactured "drama" over nothing very much that gives the game away to me. I've already risked deletion for trollhunting a couple of times for commenting on the recent - or current - threads on fake tan, imaginary dogs and persistent sock-wearers, but honestly, why can't everyone see how blatantly fake they are?
There's obviously some kind of thrill to be had by winding everyone up - they're probably the kind of people who used to find Noel Edmonds' tedious "pranks" absolutely hilarious while the rest of us cringed ourselves inside-out.

Kittybway · 20/04/2026 20:01

I often see threads with so much detail which goes against quite a lot of safeguarding id expect and within a few days entire situation is resolved. Eg affairs which are then proven and he moves out. Surely humans and relationships are more complex than that?

SummerFate · 20/04/2026 20:02

I think all the threads on MN are made up. Including this one.

SummerFate · 20/04/2026 20:04

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/04/2026 19:43

I'm suspect of the threads stating the worst thing a person has done, how they regret it to this day and then ask, What's the worst thing you've done? There seems to be a lot of threads following this format now. 🤔

Especially as her worst thing was essentially “bitched a bit about a colleague online”. Hashtag who gives a shit?

Who coincidentally used the same forum as her, identified OP and herself, and...got her sacked. What are the chances?

I love the imaginary dogs.

Hilarious.

Should be more like that, I havent got a problem with those.

And the thinly-disguised fetish ones: poo trolls, pee trolls, teen girls in skimpy clothing ones.

Although the most egregious ones imo are the ones where the OP or someone close to them is on death's door. It draws in compassionate people who get really invested and affected/upset. It's just sick.

The short answer:

  1. Genuine trolls, who are shit-stirring weirdos or incels (or both)
  2. Engagement bait posts to generate ad revenue, as MN is paid whenever people click onto a new page with new ads.*

*Unless you’ve blocked them all like I have.

SheilaWilde · 20/04/2026 20:14

I was going to start one about the amount of pets I may or may not have but someone beat me to it 🙄
@likelysuspect what’s the ‘T word’? Twix? Tupperware? Tungsten steel?
There do seem to be a multitude of made of threads. In the days gone by great fun could be had by turning the not real threads into a discussion about Bakewell tarts or chickens. 🐓 although I am enjoying the emojis so I take that as a small consolation.

SheilaWilde · 20/04/2026 20:17

@AccordingToWhom I think you win the thread by using the word ‘egregious’. Good work. I know you can’t win a thread but still.
