Having ‘a cuppa’

Why does this sentence infuriate me so? I already know I’m probably being unreasonable but it’s so grating. I can’t be the only one?

I am a fan of the band Panic Shack. They use both cuppa and sarnie in their lyrics. I love it

When I lived in Scotland it was pieces or sangwich.

Not a fan of gen Z slang words but we all have our little ways I guess!

Draw the line at holibobs. Grin

It just gets on my tits.

I get that it gets on your tits. I was asking what the reason is - is it because it’s twee or because it’s incorrect?

VeraWang · 19/04/2026 12:12

ConstantlyFuriosa · 19/04/2026 12:07

Yebbut! The top pastry is usually quite hard so all that pie-y goodness sorts that out.

I do apologise profusely for saying ‘Yebbut’.

Yebbut....yebbut...nobut 🤣

I like my pastry wellard.

<< No apology >>

Nothing will ever be worse than 'picky bits' 🤬

Agree. Gross.

HelpMeGetThrough · 19/04/2026 12:12

Cuppa
Brew
Hubby
Holibobs
Sainsbos
Picky Tea
Chippy Tea
Sarnie

Wankey words!!

3GoldenLamps · 19/04/2026 12:12

On this topic - I am not English and I detest 'spends' and 'bloods'.

I thought I was the only person that HATED this phrase. See also, "biccie"

😡

One of the reasons I spend less time on Mn as I used to is the creeping in of twee words, used unironically. Like hubby. Picky bits. Mama bear. 🤮

Yeah. It puts me off too.

It’s twee. A cuppa twee, if you like.

I say ‘cup of tea’. Not from the UK, though, and not at all formal in my speech..

I say cup of tea. I'm from the UK.

I used to love having a morning cuppa with The Hubster in my pjs of a Sunday. We would plan our holibobs and before I knew it, it was midday and I hadn't done my barnet or put my face on! Picky bits for lunch and then a bit of how's your father followed by forty winks. By that time, we needed to put the kettle on again for another cuppa chah!

Don’t forget the prezzy (or pressy, even worse) you gave him.

Well, maybe your tits are too sensitive! 🤣 Highly recommend Voltarol crem for that!

But tea IS a brew! It's literally brewed.

So is lager but I wouldn't ask for a brew in a pub! 😬😁

Ok thanks, but then saying “cup of splosh” is not twee?

Which is a saying I hate. I would always say that something annoys/irritates me. So excuse me while I finish my cuppa (in a mug).

Apart from cuppa, brew and possibly hubby are any of those used in real life?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/04/2026 12:16

I particularly loathe ‘cuppa’ when in an Aussie accent, on the likes of Neighbours, though thankfully I haven’t had to be exposed to that since dds left home.

InspectorDefect · 19/04/2026 12:16

Veggies. What are we, two years old?

You’re excused! It’s just a random annoyance, after all.

I don’t really say ‘cup of splosh’; I just don’t mind it.

Ha ha in my house the kettle is on before the last one is cold. I’d have an intravenous tea drip if I could!

Same as my house!

I love a cuppa 😊

notacooldad · 19/04/2026 12:20

Cuppa
Hubby
Hollibobs
Pj's
Picky bits and so on are not words I use but I cant see why they cause so much irritation.

The only word that I want to say "oh FFS!!" is Naice which I only see on here.
I do know how it originated and thankfully it's not used as much as it was years ago.

Someone used it the other day to describe either a 'naice' area to live or 'naice' schol' or something like that. Now that made me want to explode!

PickleJelly · 19/04/2026 12:20

Agree with the hatred for Cuppa and Hubby. Footie also really annoys me! I recognise it's completely irrational!

Agreed - hate that expression. It seems to have disappeared but "boils my piss" used to feature a lot on here. I hated it too.

I also hate "gives me the ick"

As for tweeness "date night" is hard to beat, especially if used in "recommend me an outfit for a date night"
