Having ‘a cuppa’

Why does this sentence infuriate me so? I already know I’m probably being unreasonable but it’s so grating. I can’t be the only one?

It's such a cliche to complain about hubby/hubs and holibobs. You rarely go a day without there being a thread on Mumsnet about these words.

It's a bit like saying: "I love my children." It's so obvious it barely merits the action of typing it.

Can we not find more interesting words to hate?

You lot must have really struggled with the Platty Jubes and Cov Panny phases.
Someone on here recently mentioned her 'pensh' on a post about financial planning for retirement.
I think the only ones that really irritate me are Hubby and Wifey.

Oh god, wifey said in an ironic but not really ironic way 🤬

Happyjoe · 19/04/2026 12:23

Been around my whole lifetime, it's lovely. Leave it alone!

notacooldad · 19/04/2026 12:23

So is lager but I wouldn't ask for a brew in a pub!
Well they wouldn't know what to give you because all the beer is brewed.

"Date night"- in the context of a couple in an established relationship going out in the evening.

Apart from cuppa, brew and possibly hubby are any of those used in real life?

I train with someone who says Sainsbos. Shame I’ve stopped sparring, or I’d kick them really hard.

Sarnie, Chippy and Picky Tea are used by a couple of people at work.

Weescottishwummin2 · 19/04/2026 12:25

What’s for eats !!! Drives me mad

I like a cuppa splosh.

In fact I'm drinking one now.

I worked with someone who said this but I thought he was saying cuppa splodge!

You live and learn 😆

cardibach · 19/04/2026 11:46

Cuppa is a shortened form of cup o’tea (sounds like cuppa tea) which is shortened from cup of tea. Cuppa tea is daft as not a shortening!

we just use it to replace cup of so it could be cuppa tea or cuppa coffee or after a hard day cuppa wine 😋

Cuppa
Brew
Hubby
Holibobs
Sainsbos
Picky Tea
Chippy Tea
Sarnie

Wankey words!!

But cuppa has been around much, much longer than most of those terms.
It's not in the same category as the modern, cutesy terms.

It's probably obvious that I use cuppa, as do many (most?) of my peers, but I don't think any of us use the other terms, apart from maybe brew.

I am hopefully passing the term cuppa down to my children as it's what we refer to at home.

Perhaps he's tasted my tea? 😬🤣

Why is cuppa a twee contraction? It’s just a contraction. No better or worse than isn’t or can’t or any of the others.
I do prefer paned/ad though!

"Cuppa", "hubby", "holibobs", "famalam" aren't proper contractions.

Unlike "isn't" and "can't", letters are added to them as well as taken away. That is what makes them "twee" in my opinion.

I think "panad" is more acceptable because it is a straightforward contraction of "cwpanaid" (like in "'swn i'n licio panad o goffi" instead of "'Mi faswn i'n licio cwpanaid o goffi").

Additup · 19/04/2026 12:30

My DH says it. It reminds me of my late MIL who also used to say it and my SIL. It is beyond twee.

TBH it make me feel like clawing at my face and screaming every time he says it.

And the constant need to put the kettle on!

Who are you talking about?
I'm guessing older people.

FrankSinatraonToast · 19/04/2026 12:33

I hate 'cuppa and 'brekkie'. Also 'veggies'
Almost as bad is when someone writes 'tele' instead of 'telly'.
I don't mind 'jimjams' but hate 'dindins'.

IfalldownbutIgetupagain · 19/04/2026 12:33

Is it a regional thing? I’m in Yorkshire and cuppa is used by most people I think, I’ll pay more attention now to see who does and who doesn’t say it!

Yes to all those but I loathe PJs, Jim jams is better.

Din dins reminds me of my nan when she used to dish up the food for their dog. He lived outside and she would stand at the back door with his bowl and bellow "din dins Laddie"! 😂

BringBackCatsEyes · 19/04/2026 12:38

This is such an MN thread. Everyone hating a term that in RL is used all over the place w/o the horror.

RanyaJerodung · 19/04/2026 12:38

No, jammies is better than jim jams!

Lotsofsnacks · 19/04/2026 12:39

I can’t stand ‘cuppa tea’ where as don’t mind a cuppa

I don't hate it. I don't say it but it's a long established, every day term.

RedApplePie · 19/04/2026 12:39

Cuppa, Sarnie, Buttie, Brew, Hubby and Holibobs make me want to scream. I know that’s irrational but they always have - for decades before I found MN!
