Having ‘a cuppa’

Why does this sentence infuriate me so? I already know I’m probably being unreasonable but it’s so grating. I can’t be the only one?

It’s right up there with ‘my hubby’.

No, I disagree - "hubby" is much worse.

And as for "hubster"...

CurlewKate · 19/04/2026 11:01

Hate it. Also “a tea”.

Why? And where do you stand on "a coffee"?

HeyThereDelila · 19/04/2026 11:06

YANBU. My otherwise lovely in laws use the phrase “have a brew” as well which makes me shudder.

What’s your view on holibobs ?

With the whole famalam or just hubby and bubba? 😁

TheChosenTwo · 19/04/2026 11:08

i don’t mine the phrase but as someone who doesn’t drink tea or coffee (or hot drinks) it drives me mad when things grind to a halt for a hot drink stop in general - nice day out but it’s 11 which apparently means we have to stop for caffeine 😂 - mostly in-laws who I adore so it really doesn’t matter but I do deep down find it quite annoying!

2Hot2Greedy · 19/04/2026 11:08

Only thing worse is having a cuppa with your hubby

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 19/04/2026 11:08

I hate that word.

But “chocs” is worse. Ugh. Fuck off.

Wynter25 · 19/04/2026 11:09

Nothing wrong with it.

I think in general its having tea all the time that annoys me! Nobody needs constant hot drinks.

Why not? They are as hydrating as water.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 19/04/2026 11:10

ConstantlyFuriosa · 19/04/2026 10:53

And the constant need to put the kettle on!

Now you are being unreasonable!

I do! Sorry! I dont drink soft drinks and a glass of wine at 10am is altogether a different problem!

I do (sorry). I love to have a hot drink while I work. Keeps me warm and hydrated.

PinkNailPolish2026 · 19/04/2026 11:11

It’s better than a “hot wet” or a brew. My MIL used to shout at DH all the time for using those two, he used to do it to annoy her. We don’t use cuppa etc we just ask if you’d like a cup of tea or a coffee.

mustardseedandmoonshire · 19/04/2026 11:11

Mine is having a “bite to eat”. Makes my foot itch.

Same here. I don’t touch fizzy drinks and very rarely drink juice. Tea, coffee and water are the only non alcoholic drinks I have.

VictoriaEra · 19/04/2026 11:13

Yes. It’s cringe. Hate it - and have a brew.
but we have just had a similar post to this.

TheDelcosArabiaNSoul · 19/04/2026 11:14

' hot wet' sounds so dodge!
Fly cup (NE Scottish teuchter) phrase does my head in.

Eeek teeth on edge!

And veggies for vegetables and uni for university.

Notanotherusername2626 · 19/04/2026 11:15

As a northerner it never occurred to me that cuppa was out of the ordinary… No issue with brew either.

I find colloquialisms quite endearing, wherever I am.

SnippySnappy · 19/04/2026 11:16

MIL says ''av' a cuppa chaii' in a twee way which rubs me up the wrong way.

Not sure Costa, Starbucks, Blacksheep etc agree with that

It must be a forces thing as all of DH’s colleagues used to say it, it’s horrible.

Miyagi99 · 19/04/2026 11:19

We say having a paned (Wales).

ConnieHeart · 19/04/2026 11:19

Doesn't bother me. I use the term for any hot drink really. If I offer someone a cuppa I don't necessarily mean tea. I'm just offering them a cup of something. Their choice. If I'm asking OH if he wants a tea, I'll ask him exactly that as he doesn't drink any other hot drink

ReprogramNeeded · 19/04/2026 11:20

You lot must have really struggled with the Platty Jubes and Cov Panny phases.
Someone on here recently mentioned her 'pensh' on a post about financial planning for retirement.
I think the only ones that really irritate me are Hubby and Wifey.
