Been friends for 35+ years. Both from "normal" working class backgrounds. I found out today, that her DH's business turned over £100 Million last year. Yes, One Hundred Million, it's not a typo.

They have a nice house in the South East, worth maybe £700k. There are no obvious signs of such wealth. They are not big spenders. We were at a party with them last month, and they were (as usual) quite slow to get the drinks in when it was their turn. We definitely got in more rounds. Gifts at Christmas are especially frugal, I normally receive something that has obviously been recycled as it's so bizarre, or it's obviously a freebie with another purchase.

I had been feeling quite good recently about money, as we pay off our mortgage later this year (house worth about £340k for context), and we will have a reasonable amount in savings. Now I just feel a bit Meh, as we will never attain anything like this. Just one million would do me, lol. I know comparison is the thief of joy, but I feel absolutely positively green with envy.

They will be able to do things for their 3 daughters when the time comes, like buy them homes outright - something we can't do.

We are all in our 50's, if that's of any relevance.

I can be pleased for my friend (I am), and still feel a bit jealous, or wish that we had similar.

Then get off your fat arse and start a business.

But be warned, it’s hands-down the most STRESSFUL thing in the world.

Also, I’m embarrassed for you equating profit with turnover.

OnGoldenPond · 18/04/2026 20:01

shockedpuppy · 18/04/2026 17:43

Yes. The net worth is circa £20M

That’s the company’s net assets I presume? That’s not the same as personal money in the bank for your friend. Most of it is probably working capital necessary to keep the business operating and isn’t available for the owners to personally spend. They can only take money out of the business via salary or dividends, they can’t just dip into the company bank account, that’s illegal.

AllIwantedwasanMOT · 18/04/2026 20:03

OP, of course you're surprised! PP have a point about assets vs cash, but everyone telling you off is being very disingenuous. I bet no one here looks up house prices on Rightmove either!

.....so you don't actually understand...

Weirdconditionaltense · 18/04/2026 19:54

@aredrosegrewupIm not jealous nor entitled. It was a good, friendly bunch of people who worked there . I do believe how you treat your staff speaks volumes and the way this was done did not go down well.

For a millionaire to buy second -hand mugs on their staff, most normal people can see that is not a good look. It did not make people feel valued or respected..I understand that you can't follow this so this is my last post on it. Feel free to pick away at it. Knock yourself out.

So because you can't have a disagreement you resort to telling me I can't follow along and you're ducking out. Crack on. I won't further waste my time.

Why are you using fat as a slur like that?

shockedpuppy · 18/04/2026 19:46

I felt like I was doing really well, and I guess this has made me realise that others are doing SO much better. Yes, comparison is the thief of joy, but I’m allowed to be shocked. I won’t be saying a word to them OBVIOUSLY!! 🙄

I have no doubt that you'll show it very clearly even if you don't say the actual words. I think they will be distancing themselves from you in the very near future.

wishfulthinking25 · 18/04/2026 20:08

I’m pretty shocked at a lot of these comments..I’m with you op! If one of my friends’ business turned over 100 million and they gave no indication of being wealthy I would be shocked!

PixelDreamer · 18/04/2026 20:11

I looked up a company I was going to work for before starting employment with them. On paper everything looked healthy. The company want into administration and I was made redundant shortly after I joined.

LydiaFunnyGums · 18/04/2026 20:11

You are wealthy compared to a lot of people. You’re not on the breadline, homeless and relying on food banks. Be grateful for what you’ve got.

ChaoticNoodle · 18/04/2026 20:11

I think you need to get a life and be grateful for the immense wealth you already have.

It’s not, I run a multi million pound company and I’m fine with it 😂

Chocolateteabag · 18/04/2026 17:47

”Net worth”? Do you mean value in the business? As in spend it and it’s gone?

it’s not like that all sits in their personal bank accounts ready to spend - a business needs cash to operate day to day

Weird post - how have you found this out? Companies House only have the short version of accounts - really just tells you an asset position on a certain day

A company with £100m turnover is unlikely to qualify to file small company accounts (ie no profit and loss account) so OP would be able to see their turnover in their accounts filed at Companies House. Anyone can look at these online for no fee.

RS1987 · 18/04/2026 20:17

This is very typical of AIBU.
OP absolutely it’s shocking, of course they are extremely wealthy and just tight arses. People on here would argue if you told them the sky is blue.

The fact that you have managed with no income since last July suggests you might be less "cash poor" than you are letting on - unless that has involved loans, overdrafts and credit cards!

I said we were haemorraghing through savings.

Tuesdayschild50 · 18/04/2026 20:21

Not everyone claps when you win is why some people choose to keep their cards close to their chest... move in silence let results make the noise.
Other people's envy is toxic.

LBA40 · 18/04/2026 20:25

Maybe you’re faster drinkers.

Sskka · 18/04/2026 20:25

lol the state of this thread

If someone owns a business which turns over £100m then I’d say that yes, it’s fair to infer that they’ll be worth a few quid.

Silvers11 · 18/04/2026 20:26

@shockedpuppy The net worth of the company does NOT mean your friends themselves are Multi-millionaires. It just means that all the assets of the company exceed the liabilities of that company. Businesses hold funds in their accounts, for many different things - -much like you or I would put aside cash to, say, buy a new car, or a new boiler - although their potential outgoings will be on a bigger scale, including money for various 'contingencies'!! Those 'put aside' monies, will be included in the £20 million for starters. They will not be accessible to the DH for personal use. That would be illegal.

He will draw a reasonable salary and expenses but that's it.

PILEALLTHEPILLSONTHEFLOOR · 18/04/2026 20:26

You have just paid off your mortgage. That's something.

houseofvelvet · 18/04/2026 20:28

This is such an interesting and illuminating example of how your perception of life affects your personal happiness.

Presumably, until you found this out you were perfectly happy with this friendship, liked them as people and you even said you were happy with your own savings.

Now you have found out this information (which lets face it- has no bearing whatsoever on your own life or your own happiness) you suddenly seem sneery about them, jealous and negative and are now unhappy with your own situation.

You would be wise to change your perception back to how it was before because if you carry on like this you'll end up miserable and bitter.

RosyDaysAhead · 18/04/2026 20:28

I have a lovely friend of 20 years. I live in a 2 bed ex authority house. She lives in a 5 bed detached home on a private lane. We were friends for more than 6 years before I discovered she had millions in the bank. Do I care? Nope. Does she? Also nope. We pay our own way when out together. We take it in turns for rounds at the bar. Her wealth came from an inheritance. She says her path was just lucky and she could lose it as easily (although I don’t agree with that bit!). Friendship is about kindness, fun and shared values, not money.

tealandteal · 18/04/2026 20:28

My friend is a millionaire on paper. But in reality they live quite hand to mouth and have a significant amount of loans to support the farm. It doesn’t sound like your friend has been flashing the cash so she probably didn’t want people to know. If they are good friends don’t dwell on how much money they may or may not have.

I once read that people who rely on 😂 to make a point in an argument are usually compensating for a lack of anything meaningful to say. It’s always stuck with me.

Bedlingtonwarrior · 18/04/2026 20:31

That's why they are millionaires.
Nothing wrong with that
