It has been officially announced and i really don't think it's scaremongering anymore.
Both Lufhthansa and KLM are cancelling flights now.

I haven’t seen any information from any government online saying there’s a crisis with aviation fuel and what they are going to do about it.

Me neither - is this info coming from reputable sources?

It is slowly being announced. All over BBC news, it's a slow drip feed for us but countries in Europe have made major announcement.
As usual.our government seems to have no.plan..as yet.

To be fair for me it’s not the loss of a holiday but the loss of the £5k cost of it. It won’t leave us on the bones of our arse but how privileged do you need to be to not care about that?

Surely you have travel insurance?

LilithSterninCrane · 17/04/2026 11:43

Of course. I should say potential loss because I haven’t checked the terms yet but I didn’t think they generally paid out for acts of war and my concern would be that they try to rely on that clause.

zantez · 17/04/2026 11:49

Destination weddings anyone?

Don’t you think that it’s more about looking forward to the trip and then not being able to go?
I hadn’t planned anything and so I’m not that bothered about the possibility of not going anywhere (have other issues at play too anyway), but if I’d organised a rare treat and then it had to be cancelled I’m sure I’d be disappointed.

It's more the fact that the poster specifically referred to it being the first time on a plane for some children as if it is something they should not miss out on. Obviously, looking forward to a holiday and not being able to go is disappointing. Although, I have a trip coming up in three weeks and I am mostly worried that insurance won't compensate if it has to be cancelled citing war as a reason.

Only Trump could engineer a situation in which Iran’s position appears reasonable whilst the US is acting like a rogue state, upsetting world stability and ruining economies.

We will all be paying the price for the US’s insane, irresponsible actions for years to come.

Exactly this!

Can’t see it on BBC news, have you got a link?

Insurance won't pay out in a war situation.
Many people do not realise this.

We currently produce 52% of our food and we throw away or waste a third of it. Half of all adults are overweight or obese.

Anyone with the vaguest grasp of maths, and who has ever flown over the UK, will be able to tell that we can feed ourselves if we needed to. It wouldn't be fun and would involve a lot of repurposing of land but it could be done.

I agree it could be done and we should move towards it, but the fact that adults are overweight or obese tells us very little about our ability to produce a sufficiency of nutrients and calories when much of that weight comes from UPF, empty calories and probably imported foods.

Fair, I apologise.

@Nellietheolophant this is what I'm not understanding as well
Other countries have made lots of provsions and working from home on some days and so on. Ours keeps saying we are fine .
The ex head of BP said he's waiting for the emergency fuel plan.
Where is it.

I don't have faith in them

Absolutely. The fact people are more concerned about their holidays bears out my belief that people in general are only concerned about self.

People being killed? Meh. Missing out on our fortnight in Alicante? OMG that is terrible.

I dunno, when my father-in-law was dying overseas I was pretty glad my husband was able to fly to be with him. Many people these days -perhaps not you - live more globally connected lives and it can be complicated. Personal flight does not automatically equals holiday. Guess I should have married a nice local Britisher but fifteen years and two kids later it's a bit late for that.

SomethingSScintillating · 17/04/2026 12:05

@SpiceGirlsNeedAComeBack actually there were lots of threads esp on conflict in middle East discussing all aspects of the war

People are allowed to start threads about specified issues and people can be worried about all sorts at the same time

I'm on the other threads and also worried about summer.
So leave us alone.

CautiousLurker2 · 17/04/2026 11:00

Not if all the overseas visitors who were booked to visit are also unable to reach the UK due to flight cancellations, though?

According to Google AI (which is obviously never wrong) there are about 30million overseas visitors to the UK every year, and about 11m every summer. I would say that it is very very unlikely that domestic tourism can plug the gap in the hole left by these visitors, not least because the UK is very expensive and relies on wealthy tourists, whereas a lot of Brits go abroad because it is cheaper.

Good point.
Staying on the bright side, however: at least the Brits will be able to visit the British Museum coomfortably, without long queues. 😅

@Catza

This is a funded trip for children living in poverty in the city I live in. It is funded via a national children’s charity whereby they will be meeting other kids in Spain and visiting cultural sites.

I myself grew up in poverty - I didn’t fly until my early 20s and it was no big deal. It’s more the excitement this group of kids are currently feeling in anticipation of the trip. I don’t need sympathy. I am simply saying i will feel disappointed for them all if it gets cancelled at the last minute. That is a totally normal way to feel. It most certainly doesn’t mean I cannot empathise and dislike the wider political situation.

Yes, it's just empty rhetoric to claim that any mention of the impact domestically is synonymos with indifference to war trauma in other parts of the globe.

It's empty insult hurling, based on what? Perhaps envy that some people have paid for expensive holidays abroad? Perhaps something else, I don't know.

It's just laziness. People spout what they read and hear, and can't comprehend that others can have multiple and conflicting, thoughts, opinions, worries etc..

TheHouse · 17/04/2026 12:22

@Catza

You are missing the point. It’s not about deserving to go on a plane. I didn’t fly myself until my 20s. It’s not a god given right. It is however disappointing if the trips already in the pipeline and the school kids are excited about it. Particularly kids who have never had the opportunity for foreign travel and likely will not have any chance to go in the future, or not for a long time. It’s not difficult to comprehend that I can be disappointed about multiple things at the same time.

I suspect the same. They are going to have to try and conserve the fuel for freight.

My other thought is the more precarious this becomes the more likelihood of Trump doing something big and that worries me too. When your back is against the wall anything is on the table.

Don't think it's just you worried.

Apparently Greenland invasion may be back on cards - or Cuba as he needs a win abroad.

We do UK hoildays but we're thinking about this as it may impact UK hoilday prices and avaliablity if demand increases.

I think if people are unable to go abroad, the UK will be a nightmare this summer.
We have a holiday cottage in North Wales, it was rammed during Covid. Ditto Scotland and Cornwall etc.
