What am I supposed to do about the gap between my jeans and sweater?

Fashion currently seems to have gone in the direction of relatively short jumpers and lower rise jeans. This leaves me with a gap of at least a couple of inches between the two. I’ve always carried weight on my stomach, and leaving that gap bare with my muffin top hanging out is not something anyone needs to see. But if I wear a longline T-shirt underneath (the t shirt is old, from when longline was still in fashion), it looks a bit ridiculous, because there are about three inches of fabric in a different colour to the t-shirt and jeans, just sort of randomly sitting in the middle of my outfit.

Is anyone else having this problem? What am I supposed to do?

Stop dressing for 'fashion' and start dressing for you body type.

You're absolutely right, that's definitely the key to style.

There was a thread last week about the increasing shortness of tops- clothing shrinkflation. Tall people, or at least those with long torsos genuinely find this a problem.

Fashions aside, I have always had a problem getting tops to cover the waistband of my trousers. This was aggravated when low rise trousers were fashionable, and a bit better now with high waisted stuff. Regardless of any desire, or not, to be fashionable, clothes that are available to buy in shops are largely driven by fashion. There was a glorious year or so when Boden did some of their tops in long length, and proper Gap was glorious. They did the majority of their tops online in “Tall” length as well as standard. I dream of fitted shirts and dresses with boob darts and fitted waist in the right place. As for cropped cardigans - more like a wooly bra on me.

Purplecatshopaholic · 15/04/2026 13:27

Eh? Just buy clothes you like/that fit. Hunners of jumpers out there that are not cropped. Hunners of jeans out there of all conceivable cuts and styles. Go online if it’s quicker, it sounds like you need to broaden your shopping experience to other retailers for a wider selection. Marks, or Next?

Pinkflamingo10 · 15/04/2026 13:30

purchase high-waisted jeans.
And longer jumpers.

Plus a longer length jacket.

OP, are you autistic? I’m only wondering because you seem to have a very narrow view of the options that are open to you. And you’re probably quite rigidly attached to the options you’ve been used to having thus far!
Absolutely no offence meant 🙂

I haven't bought a single thing this year because of the short top trend. I won't show off my belly at my age and I refuse to buy a short jumper that leaves me cold! Pointless.
Saving some money though, ha, always a silver lining.

OP, high rise is still out there, order online at Next or M&S? Then don't have to shop around.

Same here - even if I were a size 8 though (and I'm not ....) anything short feels too short and I would keep fiddling with it and trying to pull it down.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 15/04/2026 13:48

I bought a pair of high rise jeans from H&M two weeks ago

The short top hemlines don't work for me either so I don't wear them - I recently bought two jumpers at TK Maxx, one longline and one regular

zantez · 15/04/2026 13:52

Trend or no trend, I am not subjecting either myself or those around me to a roll of blubber by wearing something that is A. unsuitable for my shape, and B. looks ridiculous on me.

There is nothing better than wearing clothes that fit, that are comfortable and I don't have to pull them up or down all the time, or improvise with other garments to make them work.

Be a free spirit!

whattheysay · 15/04/2026 13:55

This is quite strange. Just buy some high rise jeans loads of shops sell them. They also sell longer than cropped jumpers.

YouHaveAnArse · 15/04/2026 13:56

I sympathise - used to love the UT collection from Uniqlo, but they've decided that all the women's tops are now crop tops. Most normal tops are too short for me as it is!

Rocky6 · 15/04/2026 13:56

So, it might be obvious from my answer, but I'm far from being a fashion expert. However - can you wear a shirt/blouse under the jumper, might look less silly than a t-shirt?

YouHaveAnArse · 15/04/2026 13:58

Also, if anyone knows somewhere currently doing 'curvy fit' jeans, please share. Gap did them and stopped; M&S used to do them and I trawl Vinted regularly in the hope someone's found a pair in the right length and size in the back of their wardrobe. I haven't been able to find jeans that fit since.

Burntt · 15/04/2026 14:12

Well this thread was disappointing. I clicked expecting lots of helpful links to tops and jumpers that are not cropped.

i fully get where you are coming from op. People may have a point re the jeans but I’m on your side re the tops!! I have an active childcare job, even with high rise trousers I need longer tops to stop my midriff being exposed. I also have a wierd shape so high rise don’t work on me. Why can’t we get mid rise and trust the tops we buy will cover us?!

longer tops are about you just have to look. I buy in charity shops and eBay etc

Ahsheeit · 15/04/2026 14:17

Charity shops are your friend here. The majority of my clothes come from them. High rise skinny jeans aplenty and longer tops.

Shmee1988 · 15/04/2026 14:20

Tuck the t shirt into your jeans and wear a cropped jumper.

BitOutOfPractice · 15/04/2026 14:30

what an odd post. Did you really buy jeans that don’t suit you because one shop stopped selling the style that does? Erm buy high rise jeans from somewhere else. They are everywhere.

awfulapril · 15/04/2026 14:35

Buy a jumper that fits?

NorWouldTilly · 15/04/2026 14:36

People are not being deliberately unhelpful, @Burntt - but the OP seems adamant that she is not willing to spend either time or money experimenting with other brands and styles, at all.

🤷‍♀️

CaragianettE · 15/04/2026 14:55

Mingou · 14/04/2026 23:25

Buy clothing that actually fits, seems an obvious solution.

Thanks for the replies that were helpful. Vinted to find the high rise FC jeans sounds like a good shout, as does a longline t-shirt that matches my jumper colour.

It’s not unhelpful to suggest buying high rise jeans if low rise are not covering what you want covered though. By far the most unhelpful poster on this thread OP is you. Complaining about something so easily fixed whilst being absolutely unwilling to do just that. What exactly did you think people would say?

Jopo12 · 15/04/2026 16:28

Wear high rise jeans - a gazillion shops sell them - Next, M&S, H&M, New Look, to name a few that you will find on any high street!

What you may find is that you don't like the size - if you have muffin top in mid-rise then you are probably wearing a size below what you should be wearing, and you need a bigger size to get around your waist. Happens to a lot of us as we get older, sorry!

Straight leg, wide leg, barrel leg also very trendy now and will suit a broader body-type well!

How was that not helpful? Yours buying and wearing clothes that don't fit you. You asked for a solution... buying and wearing clothes that do fit you is literally the most helpful suggestion.

Good advice. Size up, buy what suits you, and don't limit yourself to one or two brands.
Shop around.
