What am I supposed to do about the gap between my jeans and sweater?

Fashion currently seems to have gone in the direction of relatively short jumpers and lower rise jeans. This leaves me with a gap of at least a couple of inches between the two. I’ve always carried weight on my stomach, and leaving that gap bare with my muffin top hanging out is not something anyone needs to see. But if I wear a longline T-shirt underneath (the t shirt is old, from when longline was still in fashion), it looks a bit ridiculous, because there are about three inches of fabric in a different colour to the t-shirt and jeans, just sort of randomly sitting in the middle of my outfit.

Is anyone else having this problem? What am I supposed to do?

Look on Vinted for the jeans you know fit and suit you?

Weatheronshuffle · 15/04/2026 10:56

I didn't know French Connection was still going. Can you get FCUK tops still?

bestyvesty · 15/04/2026 10:59

Goodness people are difficult on here!!

I started wearing a vest underneath everything when I was pregnant as I hated the gap that appeared, and have never gone back to not wearing one. It keeps you a bit warmer in winter and conversely cooler in summer, and is really comfortable. They are inexpensive from primark / supermarkets etc

pizzaHeart · 15/04/2026 11:00

I hear you and you are welcome to rant - there are far too many
cropped boxy tops/ jumpers/ cardigans/ jackets around. However I disagree about jeans. As a midrise jeans wearer I can vouch that there are too many high rise jeans in shops. Also there are still not cropped jumpers so it’s not like you are in limbo.
I wonder if your jumpers became shorter with age so maybe it’s time to buy a new one.

VanCleefArpels · 15/04/2026 11:02

I’m baffled at the concept of having to replace jeans so frequently (she says eyeing 10 year old denim in the wardrobe) that one is “forced” to purchase something sub optimal from current collections. But anyway, OP, Vinted is your friend here. It’s great for replacing things you know fit and flatter. I’d bet you will find the FC jeans you like there, possibly even brand new.

Ukefluke · 15/04/2026 11:03

I wear relatively non violent shapewear bodies.
You see them in the gap but it doesnt bother me as they are fitted tight. Added benefit of muffin control

Melonmango70 · 15/04/2026 11:04

I always look on Vinted and eBay when I want something specific (eg FC high rise jeans in your case), and usually find them. I wanted a very specific pair of trainers as the ones I work out in at home are falling to bits and I bought them about eight years ago, put in the description and size and found them. Same with M&S kids boots that I wear, got exactly the ones I used to wear, brand new and never worn. I always look for stuff in "excellent" condition, bought but never worn and "new without tags" and pretty much always find what I need. Give it a go :)

Morepositivemum · 15/04/2026 11:05

I didn’t buy jumpers this year due to this trend (incidentally they were saying on the radio it’s not actually a trend it’s that wool has gotten expensive and to not pass on the cost they’re just selling shorter jumpers!)

UninitendedShark · 15/04/2026 11:06

A vest/ camisole is your friend . The silk/ satin ones with the lace bottom might look nice for a layered look

MiddleAgedDread · 15/04/2026 11:07

Happyjoe · 14/04/2026 23:57

I haven't bought a single thing this year because of the short top trend. I won't show off my belly at my age and I refuse to buy a short jumper that leaves me cold! Pointless.
Saving some money though, ha, always a silver lining.

OP, high rise is still out there, order online at Next or M&S? Then don't have to shop around.

same! Where are the normal length tops??

VeraWang · 15/04/2026 11:09

Stop dressing for 'fashion' and start dressing for you body type.

tofumad · 15/04/2026 11:11

Don't wear low rise jeans and short tops. Sorted.

ButtonMoonMrsSpoon · 15/04/2026 11:14

I use these

What am I supposed to do about the gap between my jeans and sweater?
Mistyloo22 · 15/04/2026 11:37

I searched high and low for a utility jacket that wasn’t cropped, at my age I definitely don’t want to be flashing my belly, and wanted a jacket to cover my waist. I’m not a slave to fashion, hence the hunt for a longer length jacket. I for one will be glad when this short fashion ends.

My current jeans are mid rise, because French Connection stopped selling the high rise skinny jeans I used to buy from them. I think it’s that that’s caused the problem. My jumpers are a few years old and were fine so long as the jeans were high rise, but not with mid rise.

It’s all very well saying ‘wear high rise jeans’, but what do you do if shops stop selling them?

How often are you buying new jeans?

I'm still wearing jeans from 10+ years ago?

TheDenimPoet · 15/04/2026 11:41

Why would you buy into a trend that doesn't suit you? Just buy high rise jeans and longer sweaters. There are plenty out there. You won't struggle.

Deadleaves77 · 15/04/2026 11:42

There are lots of high rise jeans and normal length tops around? Almost every shop sells high rise jeans. Shops are never going to completely sell only low rise jeans because so many people are not going to be happy to have their stomach on display.

If your actual issue is thay FC have discontinued your favourite jeans then just say that. It's reasonable to be annoyed when a brand discontinued a product you love, its not reasonable to be hyperbolic about it and pretend you may never be able to get jeans again

MakeMineAMilkyTea · 15/04/2026 11:54

But from the tall section! It’s what I do. I hate hate hate cropped things with a passion so I buy jumpers from the tall section, oversized or mens T-shirts to get a proper length to them. I also don’t have the body that I’m comfortable wearing cropped clothes but if you are the go for it, I like to be covered.

I'd stick to higher waistlines or longer jumpers, you can't wear both and not look ridiculous unless you are Marie moroe off gen z (I couldn't pull it off myself)

Silverbirchleaf · 15/04/2026 12:08

Jk987 · 14/04/2026 23:35

Most stores have heaps of high rise jeans.

Thus. I like the Next Lift and Slim ones.

ConverselyAttired · 15/04/2026 12:15

I'm amazed French Connection are still going to be honest. There's only one shop within 50 miles of me and they are in permanent 50% off sale.

Tu at Sainsbury's use the same manufacturers as Next, are full of high-rise jeans, last ages and are all under £30. Sorted.

It seems they cannot be the best quality either if OP needs to keep replacing them.

I have two pairs of Levi's Ribcage that I wear on rotation. I kid you not they are both about 6/7 years old and are still perfectly fine. Slightly lighter in colour granted, but certainly not worn out by any means.

Go have a scout around in the Levi's shop OP. They have an abundance of high rise and of skinnies.

PollyBell · 15/04/2026 00:01

I just buy what fits properly no idea what is in or not

Same here. I can't stand feeling uncomfortable in clothing.

Yes, jeans are very durable, aren't they?
Plus there are many high rise ones in various shops.
