What am I supposed to do about the gap between my jeans and sweater?

Fashion currently seems to have gone in the direction of relatively short jumpers and lower rise jeans. This leaves me with a gap of at least a couple of inches between the two. I’ve always carried weight on my stomach, and leaving that gap bare with my muffin top hanging out is not something anyone needs to see. But if I wear a longline T-shirt underneath (the t shirt is old, from when longline was still in fashion), it looks a bit ridiculous, because there are about three inches of fabric in a different colour to the t-shirt and jeans, just sort of randomly sitting in the middle of my outfit.

Is anyone else having this problem? What am I supposed to do?

Skip this trend if it doesn't work for you seems to be the obvious solution.

AliMonkey · 14/04/2026 23:18

Easy, don’t follow fashion, wear what suits you. High rise jeans is definitely the way to go if you’re not slim.

Flower1989999 · 14/04/2026 23:20

Just dont wear low rise jeans seems the obvious solution 🙃

Whatifitallgoesright · 14/04/2026 23:23

Duh. Get a bigger jumper?

ExOptimist · 14/04/2026 23:25

You know it isn't the law to have to wear a fashion that doesn't suit your body?

TheChosenTwo · 14/04/2026 23:25

I’m still in thermal base layers so never have this problem but I also don’t wear low waisted anything.
I’ve seen plenty of high waisted and mid waisted jeans/trousers recently,
Not every trend suits everyone, you can pick and choose.

Mingou · 14/04/2026 23:25

Buy clothing that actually fits, seems an obvious solution.

honeylulu · 14/04/2026 23:27

Low rise jeans are definitely not the thing to wear if you have a muffin top.

PollyBell · 14/04/2026 23:30

what is the point of a short jumper? not wear it I presume

CaragianettE · 14/04/2026 23:31

My current jeans are mid rise, because French Connection stopped selling the high rise skinny jeans I used to buy from them. I think it’s that that’s caused the problem. My jumpers are a few years old and were fine so long as the jeans were high rise, but not with mid rise.

It’s all very well saying ‘wear high rise jeans’, but what do you do if shops stop selling them?

OP posts:
HortiGal · 14/04/2026 23:32

There are other jumpers available

Jk987 · 14/04/2026 23:35

Most stores have heaps of high rise jeans.

High rise jeans are widely available. Zara, Hollister, Next all sell them.

florenceandthemac · 14/04/2026 23:36

Shops haven’t stopped selling high rise jeans, they are everywhere, in various fits

I actually had one very longline jumper, but then it looked ridiculous hanging way below the line of my jacket when I went out. Why can’t clothes just… work together?

If you're wearing skinny jeans, you might want to pass on fashion altogether and just wear what looks good on you - high waist is more flattering on most.

My husband calls it a 'mutton chop' as he misheard . . . 🙄

Pryceosh1987 · 14/04/2026 23:49

The colours you use for wear may help.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/04/2026 23:51

Tried Vinted for styles that you like but that aren’t in the shops at the moment.

But you can usually get most styles if you shop around - either online or in person

I’m more than happy to pass on ‘fashion’ in the sense of current trends. I didn’t buy the French Connection mid rise jeans because they were in fashion, I bought them because they were the closest thing I could find to the FC high rise jeans I liked and which they stopped selling. I don’t think it’s as easy to work around current trends as people are implying. I don’t have loads of free time available to spend trailing round Next, Zara and Hollister in the hopes of finding high rise jeans that also suit me in other ways (eg length, stretchiness) when I know the FC ones do, and I don’t have loads of money to spend buying all new jumpers and wasting the many I have just because stupid FC decided to stop doing high rise. I blame FC!

I haven't bought a single thing this year because of the short top trend. I won't show off my belly at my age and I refuse to buy a short jumper that leaves me cold! Pointless.
Saving some money though, ha, always a silver lining.

OP, high rise is still out there, order online at Next or M&S? Then don't have to shop around.

I just buy what fits properly no idea what is in or not

Buy online and return? A bit of a faff but not exactly a hardship.

I do know what you mean - m & s jeans and Gap (I so miss them) are a good fit on me, but I do still buy gap on vinted. I can't be bothered to trawl round for jeans either.

Huckleberries · 15/04/2026 00:07

Get a normal length jumper

It's not like high-rise and long line are your only options there are millions out there!
