What am I supposed to do about the gap between my jeans and sweater?

Fashion currently seems to have gone in the direction of relatively short jumpers and lower rise jeans. This leaves me with a gap of at least a couple of inches between the two. I’ve always carried weight on my stomach, and leaving that gap bare with my muffin top hanging out is not something anyone needs to see. But if I wear a longline T-shirt underneath (the t shirt is old, from when longline was still in fashion), it looks a bit ridiculous, because there are about three inches of fabric in a different colour to the t-shirt and jeans, just sort of randomly sitting in the middle of my outfit.

Is anyone else having this problem? What am I supposed to do?

My current jeans are mid rise, because French Connection stopped selling the high rise skinny jeans I used to buy from them. I think it’s that that’s caused the problem. My jumpers are a few years old and were fine so long as the jeans were high rise, but not with mid rise.

It’s all very well saying ‘wear high rise jeans’, but what do you do if shops stop selling them?

Try a different shop? I've been wearing high raise jeans ever since they became a thing. No issues of finding new ones ever. There are other brands beyond FC. Try New Look, M&S...

Laserwho · 15/04/2026 08:12

High rise jeans are everywhere

WhatNoRaisins · 15/04/2026 08:14

I've started buying men's jumpers for this reason. Even if I had the body type to pull this look off I don't want warm arms with a cold belly button.

I’m more than happy to pass on ‘fashion’ in the sense of current trends. I didn’t buy the French Connection mid rise jeans because they were in fashion, I bought them because they were the closest thing I could find to the FC high rise jeans I liked and which they stopped selling. I don’t think it’s as easy to work around current trends as people are implying. I don’t have loads of free time available to spend trailing round Next, Zara and Hollister in the hopes of finding high rise jeans that also suit me in other ways (eg length, stretchiness) when I know the FC ones do, and I don’t have loads of money to spend buying all new jumpers and wasting the many I have just because stupid FC decided to stop doing high rise. I blame FC!

Well you have two choices - you wear the FC jeans and existing jumper and put up with the tummy
gap, or you endure an afternoon of trying on jeans from other brands to find some alternatives 🤷🏻‍♀️

I HATE buying jeans/trousers - but I’ve accepted it’s an afternoon well spent once a year to go to a few shops and try on a range of sizes and styles and commit to a couple of options to see me through.

JMSA · 15/04/2026 10:26

Just wear a vest top underneath to ‘fill the gap.’ You can buy ones that specifically suck you in, eg Shapermint.

JMSA · 15/04/2026 10:28

Oh, and it sounds like you could do with a visit to Primark. Inexpensive jeans of all kinds, jumpers and vest tops all under one roof.

Chocolatecoffeecup · 15/04/2026 10:29

There are plenty of high rise jeans OP

You're greeting a problem that isn't there

AnonSugar · 15/04/2026 10:31

I hate jumpers and tops that sit at the top of the pelvis. I just feel so uncomfortable.

Nitgel · 15/04/2026 10:31

Thin vest top ?.m and s have some. They used to do.lovely tight fitting spaghetti strap tops but discontinued them

Condbottle · 15/04/2026 10:32

High rise jeans are everywhere. As are oversized jumpers.

Plenty of shops still sell high rise jeans. Next , matalan, m&s

MsSquiz · 15/04/2026 10:33

@CaragianettE I still buy high rise skinny jeans - River Island and ASOS are 2 places that sell them. I’d imagine Jean brands like Levi’s do too. Have you actually shopped around or just decided the FCUK don’t do them anymore so nowhere does?

bumptybum · 15/04/2026 10:34

PrincessofWells · 14/04/2026 23:44

If you're wearing skinny jeans, you might want to pass on fashion altogether and just wear what looks good on you - high waist is more flattering on most.

My husband calls it a 'mutton chop' as he misheard . . . 🙄

Actually, skinny jeans have made to come back for the last two or three years and I have gone from being slightly on the edge to being pretty mainstream this season so there’s loads of skinny jeans around that they’re not being worn the way they were before and they tend to be mid or high-rise rather than the low skinny of before

OttersOnAPlane · 15/04/2026 10:35

HortiGal · 14/04/2026 23:32

There are other jumpers available

In fairness to the OP, I was in M&S yesterday and struggled to find a top or jumper that wasn't short

NoYouCantComeToTheWedding · 15/04/2026 10:37

I wouldn't wear a jumper without a t-shirt or vest top under it. Get one that colour co-ordinates with your jumper if you're that concerned but spoiler alert, no-one is scrutinising your clothing choices that closely!

bumptybum · 15/04/2026 10:37

I think we’re actually really lucky at the moment because in the olden days there used to be one style of Jean that was on trend. Whereas now there are actually lots of different styles at work. It’s about the details and what you wear them with so you can be finding high fashion wide leg, barrel leg, skinny, straight, flared, Bell bottom everything in the right combination of low, medium or high-rise.
I’ve got some fantastic high-rise skinny jeans from G star that have just nailed the modern skinny
I’ve also got some midrise wide leg from the same place and also from Levi’s and also some high-rise wide leg from Zara all recently

So it’s more about branching out to different retailers and seeing what’s available and looking at how they styling them because it really is a great time for jeans you can find on jeans and so many different styles at the moment

NorWouldTilly · 15/04/2026 10:39

@CaragianettE the way other people find clothes that work for them is to try clothes from a variety of brands. They do this using their own time and energy.

It seems a bit absurd to start a thread complaining that your clothes don’t work for you, whilst simultaneously refusing to try any others.

Mostunexpected · 15/04/2026 10:40

Have a few different bodysuits, or tight fitting t-shirts, that I try to match to the colour of my jumper.
Though I only have this gap when I lift my arms up. If there is always a 2-inch gap, maybe try to find slightly longer jumpers because I know how hard finding good fitting jeans is

dontthreatenhim · 15/04/2026 10:42

CaragianettE · 14/04/2026 23:39

I actually had one very longline jumper, but then it looked ridiculous hanging way below the line of my jacket when I went out. Why can’t clothes just… work together?

Not all clothes work with all other clothes and all body shapes, obviously. Your clothes combination does work, just not for you, on account of your body shape.

ToadRage · 15/04/2026 10:45

I carry my weight on my belly too, used to have this problem a lot many years ago, in the end i completely revamped my wardrobe and rarely wear trousers now. Most of my outfits now consist of leggings with a shortish casual dress.

Go to a different shop? You don't have to shop at French Connection?

Obviously not everyone is walking around showing their midriff. Just buy clothes you like and feel comfortable in from somewhere else.

CoralOP · 15/04/2026 10:47

What an odd dilemma to have...just wear something different, there's thousands of different styles and shops, problem solved.

CatJump · 15/04/2026 10:48

A long black camisole top under the jumper tucked into the jeans can work depending on the jeans and jumper colour

dishwashing · 15/04/2026 10:53

This is the most bizarre thread. Just buy high rise jeans and/or longer jumpers. It’s so simple.

Highlighta · 15/04/2026 10:54

What?

This is the most bizarre issue I have heard in a while.

So French Connection no longer sell the pair of jeans you like, so you have bought any old pair even though they don't work for you.... just because they are French Connection.

I feel like the answer is a little bit obvious here. Unfortunately you will need to make the time to find the next pair of high rise jeans that work for you.
High rise jeans are most definitely not hard to come by.
