To suspect police are worried about vigilantes - Epsom attack

I live relatively close to Epsom and so this appalling assault is all over my news feeds and social media.

BBC News - Town left in shock by appalling rape outside church
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8dl5yevjg9o

The police have asked for witnesses but no descriptions have been given. Cue lots of very disturbing posts and comments from people who very clearly think these men are not white.

I can think of half a dozen scenarios where this is not being disclosed but, based on the comments, I think it all comes down to fears that local communities will take it on themselves to "apprehend" anyone who even vaguely looks like the perpetrators? And while the comments I am seeing are mostly white people being disgusting in their assumptions about brown and black people, i can imagine police would he equally concerned if, for example, the woman was Asian or Black and her attackers were white.

Is this where we are at? Where people make horrible racist assumptions and/or where police have to worry about how they will protect the broader community if they give any details of criminals?

A church built with stone. There is a sign in front of the building.

I lived there many moons ago. It’s really unsettling to see these events. Riot police on the High Sreet!

Same...

These stats give a picture of what is happening in the country. Just look how men from some countries are massively over represented based on the number per population. This is why people in this country are worried and out on the streets. And now the government is dispersing these men from hotels into HMO in the community, it’s going to become a problem in many more areas of the UK.

The government’s answer to this is to come down on communities like Epsom with heavy handed policing. Despite a PP assertions, the UK public is not stupid. They know exactly what is going on in their own neighbourhoods.

Up to 47% of sexual offence charges in London last year were foreign nationals

In 2024 between 40% and 47% of those charged for sexual offences were foreign nationals - despite them accounting for just a quarter of the capital's population.

Because when the problem is migrant rapists there’s something specific, and on the face of it fairly straightforward, which we can do about that specific problem, but for whatever reason we aren’t doing.

Edited

Unfortunately we cant deport British born British citizens, as much as we would like to. We can, however, deport illegal immigrants/asylum seekers and we can strip foreign nationals of the right to stay here .
Sadly there are too many human rights lawyers, paid for by our taxes, instructing illegals how to stay in the country. At the moment its pretending to be gay.
These people should not be allowed free rein , they need to be detained, processed, fingerprints and swiftly removed from.the country.
Other countries manage it fine, why cant we,?

Mapletree1985 · 16/04/2026 09:32

Withholding a description is never a good strategy. If the suspects were white, a description would be issued, so withholding and describing come to the same thing. By withholding, the police make themselves look as if they have an agenda which doesn't prioritise the solving of crimes.

NeelyOHara · 16/04/2026 09:14

Nobody is victim blaming the poor girl, however some posters on here do seem to be throwing their insults and anger at the protestors, rather than the actual rapists.

Exactly this!

josa · 16/04/2026 09:35

The police superintendent Mark Chapman has agreed to have a meeting tonight to provide more details so we do need to wait to hear this.

Imdunfer · 16/04/2026 09:36

If the police genuinely have no description of these men three days later they need to explain why, not just leave it hanging.

HopeP · 16/04/2026 09:36

I wish we hadn't lost the centre ground in this country (or increasingly across the world). One side shouting and protesting about immigrant crime but pretty quiet when similar crimes are committed by whites british men. The other side would support all other countries in their attempts to deter criminal/bad behaviour from brits abroad (from sex tourism to drunken groups) but seem reluctant for any discussion of inappropriate behaviour / culture clashes coming from immigrants to this country.

It's depressing all round.

The tories brought in a bill that said nobody who enters the UK on a small boat can claim asylum i cant remember the name of the bill which passed and was scrapped by starmer in his 1st month in office along with the rowanda bill

Thanks. So wasn't a law then.

Dollymylove · 16/04/2026 09:37

Shayisgreat · 16/04/2026 09:04

I don't see anyone defending the perpetrators. I see people objecting to racists using this horrific attack to progress their agenda. I also see people criticising the police. Who here has been victim blaming?

And herein lies the problem. Anyone objecting to these people being here are labelled racist, for the crime of not wanting 1000s of undocumented MEN, housed, fed, everything for free, allowed free rein to act as they wish.
That poor headteacher in Southport was berated for being racist for having serious misgivings about AR.
Im sure I don't have to remind anyone what happened next......

DragonsFurry · 15/04/2026 23:56

I wouldn't describe Epsom as a shit hole but it does seem to have a bit of a white underclass.

I am assuming they are not disclosing details because they are still collecting witness statements and wanting more witnesses to come forward and do not want them to be influenced in any way.

Edited

A white underclass?! Wow, that's not at all racist 😳.

EasternStandard · 16/04/2026 09:39

Sskka · 16/04/2026 08:59

But it’s not clear why that is? In which case it should be no surprise that it provokes unrest.

@EvangelicalAboutButteredToastis correct on why and yes it makes unrest more likely.

Imdunfer · 16/04/2026 09:36

If the police genuinely have no description of these men three days later they need to explain why, not just leave it hanging.

Apparently a description will be released later today. Perhaps they had to wait for a bit for cctv to be analysed etc?

RingsADingDing · 16/04/2026 09:40

Why can't she say? I know she's been through a lot.

Sarah2891 · 16/04/2026 09:40

Does anyone remember the reports of a gang rape outside a church last year? I remember all the same comments about asylum seekers then and people wondering why they didn't give descriptions. It turned out an attack didn't even happen.

Quine0nline · 16/04/2026 09:41

As the topic of asylum seekers in being discussed, at what point is a person (man) who comes from a country where a woman who is out alone is considered fair game, where a woman who is not rearing a head covering considered a prostitute, where a woman wearing short skirts or shorts, tight clothing or anything most Western women on any race consider normal considered to be "asking for it" told that In this country we (should) think very differently.

RingsADingDing · 16/04/2026 09:40

Why can't she say? I know she's been through a lot.

There could be many reasons why. I don't think you should be criticising the victim here.

I'm not criticising her at all.

Yes it was the bill passed and became law but it was immediately repealed by starmer along with the rowanda bill.

OK, questioning what she may or may not have been able to tell police at this stage.

Quine0nline · 16/04/2026 09:44

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 16/04/2026 09:10

I think we have a choice about the laws that govern said men in our country though? And the legal system?

So we should be able to make a similar amount of noise about all rapists.

Yes we should.
I recall at university in Edinburgh joining feminist protests about strip clubs. Men going in were photographed to be shamed, asked if they felt it was someone else's daughter they were leering at.
Where are the feminists now, protesting about each individual rape?

Imdunfer · 16/04/2026 09:44

ThatGoldLeader · 16/04/2026 09:38

A white underclass?! Wow, that's not at all racist 😳.

How can it be racist for a white person to describe their own community as having a white underclass?

Hoardasurass · 16/04/2026 09:43

The pp is correct, it was law until it was scrapped after the GE.
