To suspect police are worried about vigilantes - Epsom attack

I live relatively close to Epsom and so this appalling assault is all over my news feeds and social media.

BBC News - Town left in shock by appalling rape outside church
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8dl5yevjg9o

The police have asked for witnesses but no descriptions have been given. Cue lots of very disturbing posts and comments from people who very clearly think these men are not white.

I can think of half a dozen scenarios where this is not being disclosed but, based on the comments, I think it all comes down to fears that local communities will take it on themselves to "apprehend" anyone who even vaguely looks like the perpetrators? And while the comments I am seeing are mostly white people being disgusting in their assumptions about brown and black people, i can imagine police would he equally concerned if, for example, the woman was Asian or Black and her attackers were white.

Is this where we are at? Where people make horrible racist assumptions and/or where police have to worry about how they will protect the broader community if they give any details of criminals?

A church built with stone. There is a sign in front of the building.

Epsom left in shock by appalling rape outside church

Helen Maguire says she is "appalled" by the incident outside Epsom Methodist Church on Saturday.

No, I am not “calling” for anything. You are being hyperbolic about a random comment on MN.

You said: "She should be charged with wasting police time"

Similar to the early social media comments which were along the lines of 'you need to release a description of the sispects'

Both stupid ignorant comments based on close to zero information

Nourishinghandcream · 24/04/2026 13:19

That is two remarkably similar "assaults" recently that did not in actual fact happen (Banbury & Epsom).
Both at night, in churchyards, multiple attackers....... end result was that no assault took place.
I believe that in Banbury, there was no demonstrations, just a lot of SM speculation about the attackers.
Obviously in Epsom, it ramped up to another level.

It seems to have been whipped up by one horrible racist troll on Facebook Reels tbh.
A friend of mine works in Epsom, and had to avoid the mob the other night when leaving work to get to his car park.

But he says Epsom in particular seems to have more than normal St George flags flying and St George Crosses painted on roundabouts than most other towns close by…

What sort of world do we live in if someone reacting with serious concern to a woman reporting a gang rape which leads to more people being concerned because the police start acting strangely, is dismissed as a ‘horrible racist troll’?

You know that if the police and government weren’t failing us so badly, concerns about public safety like this wouldn’t even be a thing?

Being concerned does not mean shouting in the streets and intimidating local shop keepers.

EasternStandard · 24/04/2026 13:36

The Southport information undermined public trust.

In this case the police did as expected, it’s not actually their issue as much as political one. Policies and communications are creating distrust.

Smeuse · 24/04/2026 13:39

Southport also originated online, mostly by foreign accounts.

The Southport riots were a disgrace for this country. Those were not 'concerned citizens'

EasternStandard · 24/04/2026 13:46

The communication around Welsh choir boy didn’t work and undermined trust hugely.

And then promises to stop arrivals smash the gangs etc, it all feeds into what we see.

It’s not just in the UK, it’s straining many countries in the same way. It’ll change as voters will demand it.

In this case it did. I don’t know what you mean by intimidating shopkeepers but it was a protest - why would you not expect shouting in the street?

What did it do in this case?

Shopkeepers were advised to close their shops, especially the ethnic minority ones.

It was a protests, against what exactly?

They were not sharing information because….there was none to share! What would you rather them do? Make it up?

He was Welsh although unsure if he was ever involved in the church to that extent.

The claims were he “arrived on a boat recently” which was patently false.

All of the judgemental posters on this thread should come back on to apologise for whipping up such horrific identity based violence against innocent people.

And a lot of them already had police records (which came in handy when the police had to track them down).

5MinuteArgument · 24/04/2026 10:35

I'm very glad to hear that no crime occurred on this occasion. Meanwhile we have a woman attacked on Brighton beach by 3 men who shouldn't even have been in the country.

No.

You do NOT get to equate one non-crime with an alleged crime by alleged immigrants.

It is EXACTLY people like you who stirred up the Epsom shit in the first place.

Not all rapes are by immigrants. Do not bring your whatsboutery onto this thread. You are just stirring up racial hatred and there is no place for it in the UK where human beings are treated as human beings no matter where they were born.

All rape is wrong and that's whether it's White British rapists or non White British rapists. You should be calling out ALL rapes not just selective rapes based on racist judgement.

Raquelos · 24/04/2026 18:48

If only there were this level of outrage and concern about alleged rapes committed by white British men, I might feel a little less cynical about this. As it is, these concerned citizens are nowhere to be seen on actual issues of male violence against women and girls, so really, they can all do one.

Guilty. Not alleged.

Three men have been found guilty of raping a woman on Brighton beach in a "cynical, predatory and callous attack".
Iranian national Abdulla Ahmadi, 26, and Egyptian national Ibrahim Alshafe, 25, had denied repeatedly raping the woman in the early hours of 4 October.
Karin Al-Danasurt, 20 and also from Egypt, had denied filming her ordeal. He was also found guilty of rape as a secondary party.
The three men - who are asylum seekers - were convicted at Hove Crown Court on Thursday.

Prosecutors have claimed that Al-Danasurt was convicted of murder in Egypt before he crossed the Channel into the UK on a small boat, although his defence barrister has disputed this.
He had also been given a caution in the UK for criminal damage in April last year, prosecutors said.

Not all rapes are by immigrants.

Nobody said they were 🤷‍♀️ but it’s a concern when a man allegedly on the run for murder can abuse the asylum system and be here committing further crimes and changing a woman’s life forever. Are we allowed to be concerned?

Three men guilty of 'callous' Brighton beach rape

The men, who are all asylum seekers, had denied targeting the woman in the early hours of October 4.

Agreed. There was nothing 'alleged' about this attack or the 3 men who committed it, and people have a right to be concerned about it.

Smeuse · 25/04/2026 09:45

People can be concerned without rioting in the streets or asking if there are asylum seekers living nearby

No one here is rioting on the streets, but posting. Still women are asked to apologise etc

“reacting with serious concern” is quite different from “deciding the as-yet unsolved and unverified crime was perpetrated by immigrant men and marching aggressively in the streets about it, because one person decided he knew more about the attack than those who were investigating it lawfully”

It’s the same mentality that was quickly shut down when a stabbing occurred at a local hotel hosting migrants and somebody tried to organise a “meeting” about it at a local pub. In that case, the pub landlord shut the idea down really quickly, so nothing came of it. It seems that sanity prevailed there.

We don’t want mob rule! And has it occurred to you that by causing trouble in this case and in the same area may have hampered the lawful investigation - not least by diverting resources from the actual investigation?

I’m thinking of it more as ‘reacting with serious concern when yet another violent attack is reported and judging by the pattern of behaviour exhibited by police and recently reports of very similar incidents in Brighton and Bristol x 2 and other rapes in places like Bournemouth etc’ if that helps?

We don’t want mob rule! And has it occurred to you that by causing trouble in this case and in the same area may have hampered the lawful investigation - not least by diverting resources from the actual investigation?

Obviously not! But the public are feeling increasingly unsafe because we have men who we know are criminals entering our country by various means. Just from the few reports mentioned on this thread, there are at least 4 rapists who have come here from Egypt (plus several from other countries). One is wanted to serve his sentence for a murder conviction in Egypt, one is a convicted terrorist and all (as I understand) came in on small boats. The number of women raped and murdered by people who shouldn’t have been here and free to do that is growing. Instead of blaming the people protesting why not blame the people enabling this?

The police and government have the responsibility to keep us safe and secure our borders but they are failing. When the government is clearly not listening, it leaves people with little option but to protest. This is on them.

Does ayone feel safer now with those vigilantes around?

DD doesn't, she felt very intimidated by them as she cycled home from work.

Notonthestairs · 25/04/2026 12:50

I think people who throw things at the police and use up police resources should take responsibility for their own actions.

Those arrested didn't come from Epsom so it was another day trip out for rabble rousers - defended for unknown reasons on here.
