To suspect police are worried about vigilantes - Epsom attack

I live relatively close to Epsom and so this appalling assault is all over my news feeds and social media.

BBC News - Town left in shock by appalling rape outside church
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8dl5yevjg9o

The police have asked for witnesses but no descriptions have been given. Cue lots of very disturbing posts and comments from people who very clearly think these men are not white.

I can think of half a dozen scenarios where this is not being disclosed but, based on the comments, I think it all comes down to fears that local communities will take it on themselves to "apprehend" anyone who even vaguely looks like the perpetrators? And while the comments I am seeing are mostly white people being disgusting in their assumptions about brown and black people, i can imagine police would he equally concerned if, for example, the woman was Asian or Black and her attackers were white.

Is this where we are at? Where people make horrible racist assumptions and/or where police have to worry about how they will protect the broader community if they give any details of criminals?

Helen Maguire says she is "appalled" by the incident outside Epsom Methodist Church on Saturday.

New update.

the police have said there was no sexual assault. A woman sustained an accidental head injury prior to making a confused report and is being supported by the relevant services.

dapsnotplimsolls · 23/04/2026 19:01

Just read that. Fucking arseholes rioting.

They look absolute fools.
There's usually a very good reason why the police are slow to release details and it's not because of skin colour. Wait for the damn full story, people.

How do you mistake slipping and bumping your head with being gang raped?

Whut? Do you have a link to this claim?

snowymarbles · 23/04/2026 19:24

That’s a link to local police fb page btw in case you just think is some random link.

Baital · 23/04/2026 19:27

It's been fairly obvious for those of us living nearby. But the thugs are claiming that the police are covering up, so are up for even more rioting.

I think it is a very reasonable assumption. I will explain my reasoning.

In a UK police station, country of origin is one of the easiest and most reliable things to identify about a British suspect. Our records from birth are easily accessible to the police. They do not need to rely on the suspects being forthcoming.

The government has long been very coy about crime stats by country of origin while trying to reassure us that men originating from outside the UK are not more of a risk than British men.

If they knew that would be backed by the data, they would ensure the data was produced and readily available to the public.

This would save a lot of the issues of worry and unrest we are currently seeing. But it doesn’t, so they don’t.

So maybe you could attribute some of the lack of information simply to poor record keeping, it would be unjustly harsh (imo) to claim that police are so incompetent they fail to record important information in 75% of cases.

It’s an interesting set of data though - I wonder what the relative numbers would look like now, 8 years on. Also quite horrifying this is just numbers from the Metropolitan police area.

How is country of origin easy to ascertain? How do you prove where “John Smith, 37” was born? It’s not like we take DNA and fingerprints of everybody at birth.

I hope the rioters and those assuming it was migrants feel stupid.
Now what about those who said of course she was raped - if she says she was gang taped of course it is true. All men....

Smeuse · 23/04/2026 19:53

Does ayone feel safer now with those vigilantes around?

there is still people saying it’s a police cover up!

No she shouldn't. Head injuries can cause false memories.

It's not like the case in Barrow where it was malicious.

Hopefully she'll get psychological support as it's likely to have been very traumatic for her.

Carla786 · 23/04/2026 23:50

I think rolling 24 hour news channels haven't helped. It feeds the expectation of constant updates. Then X & others give the impression that 'the truth' is out there, not in 'the MSM.'
There HAVE been unfortunate cases where SM have provided info the MSM didn't, but it doesn't logically follow the MSM are always lying and there's always a counter narrative.

I don’t. I am glad I don’t have family living there either.

You do know that the police firmly establish the identity of any person when they charge them with a crime?

One of the key things they check is immigration status and citizenship.

They don’t just accept a criminal calling himself ‘John Smith’ you know - they find out who he is.

The figures I mentioned above do not differentiate between men of British origin and those who have either acquired British citizenship recently or through their parents immigrating so actually the proportion of gang rapists of British origin is even LOWER than 18% of total gang rapists in that period.

You don't know the full facts of what's happened, she hasn't been charged with wasting police time.

That's how this whole mess escalated - people 'calling for' action when they did not have an understanding of the full facts.

It's very likely that the girl was very drunk, got separated from friends & has then fallen & lost consciousness. She's likely very disorientated & frightened. There may be something that has led her to believe she was assaulted or followed. She's articulating all this in a very distressed & confused way to a&e staff who then have a duty to report suspicion of 'rape' to police. She's not been able to give any details to police, is still recovering from the concussion so police do the media appeal while they wait for her to recover in order to interview her.

She's likely only really understood what's happened with the information from the police. She very likely did genuinely believe she had been attacked at the time.

That's actually a common scenario for police investigations & the initial reports are often way out.

Wasting police time would be if there is a deliberate, malicious attempt to waste police time.

5MinuteArgument · 24/04/2026 10:35

I'm very glad to hear that no crime occurred on this occasion. Meanwhile we have a woman attacked on Brighton beach by 3 men who shouldn't even have been in the country.

Worralorra · 24/04/2026 10:48

It seems to have been whipped up by one horrible racist troll on Facebook Reels tbh.
A friend of mine works in Epsom, and had to avoid the mob the other night when leaving work to get to his car park.

But he says Epsom in particular seems to have more than normal St George flags flying and St George Crosses painted on roundabouts than most other towns close by…

And they have been dealt with by the courts, not vigilantes.

There is also sentencing taking place of a British man who raped a Sikh woman

LOL - yes a random, semi-serious comment on MN is the same as protesting and rioting in the streets.

I’m not “calling for action”.

You are on social media calling for someone to be charged with wasting police time when you have close to zero information on the case.

If there was a need to charge the person for wasting police time then that's what they would have done.

No, I am not “calling” for anything. You are being hyperbolic about a random comment on MN.

Yep she won’t be charged with this.
