Misophonia - what are your triggers?

My major one currently is people within earshot eating snacks out of a packet e.g. crisps, cookies, and making that bloody crinkling noise. Makes me want to put my fist through the wall. What are your main triggers?

OP posts:
CaffeinatedMum · 14/04/2026 07:30

Noisy eating
slurping tea
Cutlery scraping on a plate
Clicking knuckles
Dog licking his paws

CaffeinatedMum · 14/04/2026 07:30

I’m actually really struggling with this at the moment, it’s definitely getting worse for me. Anyone got any advice?

Windywuss · 14/04/2026 07:37

I can't abide the sound of women with long nails tapping on keyboards when typing. It drives me insane. I have tinnitus and noise sensitivity and I'm sure it's got worse with that.

I can't sit near certain colleagues in meetings.

Remmy123 · 14/04/2026 07:39

Noisy eating / breathing / throat clearing

NeedANewOne25 · 14/04/2026 07:42

@CaffeinatedMum, OP, my husband has misophonia, it’s not easy to live with and is quite limiting for him and us. This is not just being a bit irritated by people eating noisily he gets a strong anger reaction when he hears crunching, sloppy eating etc.
Things that help, booking restaurants at off peak times, sitting in a quiet location. He has good noise cancelling headphones for when we’re at home, and Loop earbuds for when we’re out. Cinema is difficult because “popcorn”, earbuds again help.
Managing his overall stress levels helps a little, yoga, bilateral music etc, but if we could find a solution it would be life changing. He’s tried other things, cutting out alcohol etc, but nothing has really helped.

isthismylifenow · 14/04/2026 07:43

People stirring their tea or coffee for longer than needed
Tapping nails on products when advertising them
Any dripping water, from tap or toilet filling. Even rain if its landing on something constantly.
Chewing
Snorting or sniffing
Packets rustling
People not picking up their feet when walking, that sloppy sliding sound
A spoon hitting a bowl when someone is eating.
Anything ASMR

I am a joy 😀. But I do think I have an excessive case.

donotmissyourchancetoblow · 14/04/2026 07:46

teeth brushing, noisy nose breathers, finger tappers and hard sweet crunchers

LostTheGoodScissors · 14/04/2026 07:49

Whispering is by far the worst trigger for me. After that, it’s chewing, especially wet, chewy sounds. Things like meat are particularly unbearable, much more than crunchy foods. Beyond that, there are lots of other noises that get to me too, like cutlery clinking, scratching, or the clicking of buttons on older phones. It feels like it’s getting worse as I get older. The only things that really help are having background noise on, using earphones, or just covering my ears if I’m with people who understand and don’t think I’m being rude.

I am going to follow to see if you get any replies to this, as I am the same.

I am convinced that it stems from my exh snoring. I do not remember being this sensitive to noise previously. I would get myself into such a rage that I was not able to sleep because of the noise.

Is this a thing? Can a constant noise like snoring and sleep deprivation be a cause?

I am single now, so that trigger is gone, but I am so noise sensitive generally now.

Just to say noisy eaters doesnt mean you have Misophonia .
It means they are a ill manner pigs

My DH can make the dog jump biting into an apple
He is currently brewing a cold and we already have the forced loud coughing
Its like his head is a cave Hmm

Haha yes my dh eats an apple like a crack of thunder. I feel like he could enter a competition for loudest apple eater in decibels, it defies physics.

He's a very soft spoken man with a soft tread like a cat (a deliberate feature in my choice of husband because I hate stomping men). So that makes it more alarming when he sneezes.

AATCHOO-oo-oo (echoes throughout the neighbourhood, crows caw in alarm and flutter away).

Apple eating and loud sneezing should accrue fines.

Cutlery scraping. I still have a couple of memories of particularly awful sounds that make me cringe years later and that I can’t bring myself to type. I used to hide it so thoroughly that it just felt normal to me to several times a week go to the bathroom mid meal and punch my own legs to be able to come back and cope with it. Now I have told people it’s so much better, occasional exposure is much more tolerable than trying to power through every day.

Put on music at mealtimes, it's the only thing that works for me

GenieGenealogy · 14/04/2026 07:55

Cracking knuckles. Cannot stand it.

audhdandme · 14/04/2026 07:57

People biting into apples and opening cans of drinks! It sends me into a rage. Also watching/hearing people eat on social media. Who enjoys that???

AClassicTrenchcoat · 14/04/2026 08:02

People typing on a laptop/keyboard
Noisy eating, slurping, lips smacking
Crisp bag rustling
Some water sounds - some fountains, water sloshing in an iron
Tapping
Whispering
Also some movement - can’t remember the name - it is the movement version of misophonia - so people applying make us, rubbing creams etc on their face, particularly that exaggerated way instagrammers do it. Also watching hands type - keyboard and texting. There is a quiz show on Channel 5 hosted by Jeremy Vine, with Carol Vorderman and Sally Lindsay. There is a round where they are at a table, the camera is overhead and focused on their hands, they move tiles to make words. For some reason the sight of their moving hands and the noise of them moving the tiles makes me feel sick. I am well weird.

Frangle · 14/04/2026 08:03

ASMR is like a form of torture. I can't bare it.

DH has a problem with his nose, it makes his breathing and chewing food really loud. I have to practice deep breathing and remind myself constantly that it's medical and he can't help it.

People filing their nails

TikTokker · 14/04/2026 08:05

Cutlery scraping on plates on spoons bashing against the side of bowls sends me to a very bad place

OnceUponATimed · 14/04/2026 08:05

The whistling noise on the radio when some people speak (often caused by dentures)

A sort of smacking noise some people on the radio make when speaking.

Any deliberate repeated noise, my otherwise lovely nephew taps constantly. Drives me CRAZY.

Obviously mouth open eaters, they need to be shot. Sadly includes my adult child, who himself would shoot me for my finger licking (I would also shoot myself ironically).

Windywuss · 14/04/2026 08:08

There's a certain mouthy sound when some people on podcasts or radio speak. I can't bear it. Bit like chewing but just opening their mouths to speak they make a clacky sound and it's picked up by the mic. I have to turn the radio off.

Tandmarmite · 14/04/2026 08:09

Slurping drinks, eating crisps. Non food - clipping fingernails....aaargh! And don't even start me on sniffing & throat clearing...😡🤢

Windywuss · 14/04/2026 08:09

@OnceUponATimed YES! Posted same time as you. Jinx!

threescoops · 14/04/2026 08:09

stapletonsguitar · 14/04/2026 06:57

DH does a double whammy with his tea - a slurp then a gulp 😩

My sister also makes a horribly loud gulping noise in her throat when she swallows a drink! 😫

Lazydomestic · 14/04/2026 08:10

Banana (smell that gets stronger with the peel). Been known to take someone’s banana skin away & bin it
Apples (crunch)
Pears - absolute worst - (crunch & sucking sounds)
Luckily most people I work with know this & wont eat them at their desks 🤣🤣🤣

Murfmeister · 14/04/2026 08:11

My husband eating. He makes a disgusting noise and sometimes snorts....

I'm really hypersensitive to this though, so it may be usual eating noises, but it gives me the rage / feel sick (mostly rage though)

bignewprinz · 14/04/2026 08:12

Sneezing & nail clippers are the two worst ones for me. God forbid anyone ever moves next door with a basketball as that noise also sets me off.
