Pizza etiquette

In-laws bought a pizza oven last year so almost every visit now involves pizza. I do like pizza but only really margarita. Ils put thick chunks of veg on their pizzas that don’t cook and shield the dough underneath so you end up with soggy pizza. They also dont ask what toppings people want. This time I said could one pizza be plain and they looked at me like I had two heads!! They did make it but then made a deal of handing me my ‘special’ pizza (I’m willing to bet I’m not the only one who would have preferred it!)
I think pizza is like sandwiches people should get a say in what they want.
Dh thinks it’s weird to request a pizza topping (and clearly so do mil and fil)

am I unreasonable to ask for a specific topping?

Do you know what I find even more irritating than your in-laws acting like you’re crazy for wanting a plain pizza (and you’re absolutely right to say it’s like a sandwich and people choose how they want it), it’s that your dh is siding with them even though deep down he knows you’re correct and is gaslighting you into believing you’re odd for wanting a freaking margarita! My dh does this all the time with me when it comes to his family- they do something odd/unconventional/unacceptable/dangerous, I point it out to him as odd/unconventional/unacceptable/dangerous, and he immediately sides with his family and then tries to convince me I’m mad. He’ll actually say “you’re fucking mad” and look horrified at me. And yet, if he saw someone else doing it he’d be the first to point it out as odd/unconventional/dangerous.

You can’t stand the woman and according to your other thread you have on the go about this dinner - your mil was horrible to you and your son. So clearly there’s quite a back drop

basically - don’t go around there anymore. Simple really

Edited

My other thread (I think!) was about mil being rude to me but yes they do my head in! Actually it’s fil that makes the pizza though not mil although they were both put out

I should go less but I’ve trapped myself in this situation where we visit as a family as opposed to my side where I visit on my own and dh comes about 3x a year!!

i also pimp up shop pizza but the trick is to add the toppings half way through the cooking time,to add things that are at room temperature and to only add things that don't require actual cooking, only heating and crisping...and yeah not shedloads.

Halfway through is a good call - I'll mention that! She does pizza so rarely it isn't really an issue, but the time the only cheese was wensleydale with cranberries was a bit memorable...

Can we have a 'pineapple on pizza' side-debate? 🍕 🍍
Ham + pineapple = 😋
But I have Italian friends for whom this is as bad as insulting their grandmother (which I don't do, obvs 👍)

COME AT ME

YANBU at all. Of course you should get to choose pizza toppings! That’s the whole point of a pizza.

This -^

God they'd hate me. I only eat pizza if it has anchovies on it. I'm not burning through loads of carbs, fat and stuff unless it actually tastes of something. IMO anchovies are the point of pizza.

So I'd happy have my "special pizza" and insist on all the fishy goodness.

Or just bring a salad.

I’m the same with olives. Don’t mind if they’re green or black, stuffed or plain - but obviously no stones !!

PrudenceDictates · 13/04/2026 08:44

YANBU.
We have pizza night at the weekend. I make the bases and everyone tops their own with whatever they want; be it margarita or, like me, a ridiculous amount of different stuff - artichoke, anchovies, jalapenos etc.

I can’t imagine having guests and being so controlling over what they eat. I like my guests to enjoy their food!

ETA - I parbake the bases beforehand to avoid sogginess for those who want lots of toppings; DD prefers hers raw as she only lightly tops.

Whatexcellentboiledpotatoes · 13/04/2026 08:45

I wouldn't worry about it OP. They're only cooking constant pizzas because they have a new toy
They'll soon get over it and start cooking something else.

Time to reframe your visiting - if DH doesn’t visit your family save for a handful of times you have carte blanche to do EXACTLY the same imo!

MyDeftDuck · 13/04/2026 08:47

Blimey! You even get a choice at Pizza Express! How about buying them a pizza recipe book ( I’m sure there is such a thing ) ……..no one wants a soggy bottom😜

Rainbowdottie · 13/04/2026 08:48

I don’t think there’s anything wrong at all in wanting your choice of pizza. But you’ve said it now and stay in that lane. Whether they make a fuss or not (who cares?!) just stick to asking for what you want. They’ll get the message soon enough. I personally wouldn’t be bothered by remarks or fuss but I agree good etiquette would be to ask you what you actually want.

Auroraloves · 13/04/2026 08:49

They are weird. My in laws are a bit like this but with their outside pegola. Every visit involves sitting in that because it has a roof. Doesn’t matter how cold it is, I’ve got used to dressing for the outdoors when we visit.

Heronwatcher · 13/04/2026 08:50

Oh god if they get an attitude about this then just stop going. Or take your own food and eat it out of Tupperware because “you wouldn’t want them to have to make a special pizza again” 😉

Minniliscious · 13/04/2026 08:50

Oh yes - another vote for pineapple and ham pizza 🍕 👍

Bjorkdidit · 13/04/2026 08:52

I like veg on pizza, but that would annoy me too. They sound like bad cooks and bad hosts.

Yes, the whole point of pizza is that you get to choose your own toppings and what annoys me is that shops and takeaways tend to offer several different versions of processed pork, BBQ chicken (WTF?), one token Mediterranean veg one, however this is often spoiled by abominations such as sweetcorn, pineapple or it being spicy. Marghartia, which is fine, but I do like toppings as long as they're nicely cooked and don't spoil the lovely crispy base that you'd want from good pizza.

When I'm in charge, anyone selling pizza will be required to offer an equal number of other flavourings for every pepperoni/meat feast/BBQ chicken variety that they sell.

you know its possible to untrap yourself?

MrsJeanLuc · 13/04/2026 08:53

firstofallimadelight · 13/04/2026 08:31

The problem is if you over stack a pizza the bits not covered in veg cook quickly and get near to burning whilst the veg and dough underneath is still raw 😞

I think the only defence is to eat the bits you can and very openly reject the bits that are burned or raw.

Or keep asking for your "special" pizza - it doesn't matter if they think it's odd, does it?

You could take up a hobby or arrange to meet a friend? So next time DH says we are going next Sat you just say " go ahead I am busy but I dont want to stop you from going"

Gradually everyone will get more used to it

We have a pizza oven and did pizza for a family birthday at the weekend. All 12 people got exactly the pizza they wanted

Yes! We have to sit on the uncomfortable chairs in the conservatory rather than the lovely settee in the living room. Fine in summer, less appealing in winter!!
