With the following caveat, you must select one that you love, rather than for its worth etc.

At the moment, I would choose “Sketch of a Seated Cat” by Gwen John. ❤️

The Execution of Lady Jane Grey

A Study, in March by John William Inchbold.

Holbien's Christina of Denmark. The painting of the black velvet and the fur are incredible and show his incredible talent & patience. Fell deeply in love when I saw it at the National Gallery years ago and periodically go back and reassure myself it's still stunning.

The scream by Edvard Munch.

Me too! I really love that painting.

Bambalama · 11/04/2026 13:23

Daphne, by Caroline Walker. I’m obsessed with her paintings at the moment, and this one looks just like our DC and our sitting room when he was a toddler.

The Mill by Lowry, The Hay Wain by Constable or anything by Gustav Klimt.

We bought a signed, limited edition Lowry print years ago and joked We need him to die now to increase its value! He obliged, a couple of days later, I've always felt very guilty!

Its a sculpture, but id have Lucifer - La genie du mal. It'd have to go in my garden i think, but its absolutely beautiful 😍

Cold Dark Matter would be very tempting as it's one of my favourites. Unfortunately I don't have a massive spare room to house it.

But I think I'd go for Artemisia Gentileschi's self portrait or Georgia O'Keefe's Black Iris

I wake each morning to a huge Georgia O'Keeffe print that we bought at the G O'K museum in Santa Fe, it cost far more to have it framed back in the UK than we'd paid for it.

SparrowFeet · 11/04/2026 13:32

It's a gruesome one, but Judith Slaying Holofernes by Artemisia Gentileschi.
The artist went through so much and the painting is just so full of anger, revenge and triumph. What a woman.

I love Zinaida Serebriakova’s ‘At the Dressing-Table. Self-Portrait’. I love the confidence of her stance, the tone and it just looks so contemporary.

The Execution of Lady Jane Grey

Oh this painting is devastating, it absolutely takes my breath away every time I see it! The scale is extraordinary.

Verity sculpture (Damien Hurst) if that’s not taken please. Such a powerful piece of art. The people of Ilfracombe might be a bit sad to see her go though!

I would like the Little Mermaid, there's a table in the hall on which it would look beautiful. When we were in Copenhagen we walked up and down the quay looking for it, eventually we went over to see what a group were looking at and it was she, so much smaller than we expected!

OttersOnAPlane · 11/04/2026 14:31

I have that on my fridge!

bridgetreilly · 11/04/2026 14:34

One of the stripe paintings by my namesake, Bridget Riley. Obviously I would also need the enormous house to fit it in.

Whosthetabbynow · 11/04/2026 14:36

Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy. David Hockney circa 1971

NancyJoan · 11/04/2026 14:40

This Cezanne is in the National Museum of Wales. It is my very favourite painting.

bridgetreilly · 11/04/2026 14:41

When I was at university, there was an art collection you could pick from to have in your room for a year, then take it back and have something else the next year. Wouldn’t it be brilliant if the National Gallery and Tate and everywhere else worked like this? They have tons of stuff with no room to display it all, so there’d still be plenty in the galleries.

Do you not think it would give you a headache? I love BR, but I remember chatting to one of the room guards at her exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery and he said he’d learned to mostly not let his eyes dwell on the paintings for too long or it gave him vertigo! (I think I’d been feeling slightly woozy after an hour, which is why I asked…)

I’m happy with my little Jenny Bloomfield collection

I'd have "The Bride", a carved bust by Raffaele Monti - here is a picture of a cast made from it, in the Fitzwilliam Museum. I'm always astounded how it is possible to carve solid stone to appear transparent! The Fitzwilliam Museum - The Bride: C.7-1969

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. A diaphanous veil in marble - an absolute masterpiece 🙏🏻

Boulevard Montmatre at night by Pissarro. I just love it. I could look at it for hours.

Nourishinghandcream · 11/04/2026 15:03

The Fighting Temeraire by Turner.

No real reason other than I find it so atmospheric.
