to think it’s time to ban dogs from shops and cafes?

I’ve just read a BBC article about the increase in dog attacks in the UK.

Dogs seem to be everywhere now. Cafes, shops, even places where food is being served. I’m not anti-dog at all, but I don’t really want to be eating or shopping surrounded by them.

It’s not just about preference either. Some people are allergic, some are genuinely scared, and others just don’t want to deal with barking, smells or dogs getting under their feet. The BBC piece even mentioned people feeling like they have to avoid going out because dogs are everywhere now.

I also don’t really get how it’s hygienic in places serving food. I know people say “well-behaved dogs are fine” but not all dogs are well-behaved, and staff aren’t exactly going to challenge every owner.

Before anyone says it, yes obviously assistance dogs are different and should be allowed. That’s not what I mean.

I just feel like we’ve swung too far the other way where dog owners expect to take them absolutely everywhere, and everyone else just has to put up with it.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to have more dog-free indoor spaces again?

This is a new on me. Dog owners get pounced on as soon as they mention badly behaved kids in public. But here we likening dogs to cars.
You could not make it up!

Right? It was cigarettes on another thread.

Oh yes, the public health nuisance that is breathing in second hand dog fumes. So many deaths and ill health caused from a dog in the same room.

Oh, I must have hallucinated the dogs then. My mistake

My dd lives in Bath and the place is heaving with them. You didn't hallucinate.

I've just Google imaged Bath city centre busy photos.

Hundreds of photos. Not one dog. One swan though. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/watch-baby-swan-get-escorted-out-of-busy-city-centre-by-police-124524056.html

Watch baby swan get escorted out of busy city centre by police

The cygnet was ushered through busy shopping streets in Bath, Somerset, by three police officers.

People leave cars outside unattended. Sometimes they get stolen. But they don’t drive their cars into Tesco with them just in case do they ?

I mean, you could ask for cages instead if clips aren’t secure enough.

Not sure why you mentioned children, this thread is about dogs.

Dogs (and cats) are stolen to be used as bait in dog fights.
They’re stolen for extortion. Or to be sold on. Or for all the animal abuse videos that no one takes down.

Bit different to having your fucking ford fiesta nicked for a joyride, isn’t it?

But could you do that @Gingercatlover if nearly every day you encountered threads saying such terrible things about cats? E.g. that the are anti-social shit?

Because it’s true they are. I think they should be banned from being allowed outdoors, decimating the wildlife.

I have had a motorcycle stolen. I was fucking fuming, but I got a pay out from the insurance and got a new one.

I have known people who have had dogs stolen or go missing, and the heart break they go through is devastating. Dogs are family. A vehicle is not.

Our town has become very dog friendly, I don't like it and feel like most cafes here do accept dogs. The thing I hate the most though is having to dodge the endless puddles of wee on the pavement. It feels very unhygienic.

I don't agree that this is where dog attacks are happening though. Most of those seem to happen in people's homes. Not shops or cafes.

Endless puddles of wee?! Where do you live? Can’t say I’ve walked along any street in my town and had to dodge puddles of wee.

Dodging endless puddles of wee. Rivers of free flowing shit.

You’re weakening any valid points you might have.

I think this is the answer!

You make a whinny post, we are entitled to respond and disagree. It’s also really boring to keep wanging on about the same thing week after week.
We get some people don’t like dogs, that’s fine for them, but they don’t get to set the rules for other people. We live in a (largely) free and capitalistic company, if a business owner wants to allow dogs they can and your only impact on that is to choose not to use them. If allowing dogs was depressing their business they wouldn’t do so, ergo you are in the minority.

Hankunamatata · 10/04/2026 18:35

I agree

Superhansrantowindsor · 10/04/2026 18:36

I wish someone would open a dog free cafe where I live. There isn’t a single one that bans dogs. I don’t think they should be banned everywhere but I would like just one place to be dog free.

While im here Not just dogs on the list can we also bar, unruly feral kids, parents that have there heads in their phones instead of parenting, parents that need the whole shop aisles and paths with prams that dont have kids in them becaus their kids are running riot, and old people with trollys on the bus that insist they stay in the middle of the floor.

Shops and cafes are private businesses who assess their own business needs and client bases and decide what makes business sense to them. If they prefer the custom of people with dogs or tolerant of dogs and see it as a better income source than people like you OP, this is their choice.

We don't need every element of life and business mandated by the government. We already have the dangerous dogs act and criminal justice system to manage dogs, if this is not working properly then we need to tackle it via these routes, but I will continue to take my well behaved dog to cafes that are happy to have him and me.

In Switzerland shops / cafes etc provide these handy hooks to clip the leash to while the owner goes inside and their sentient plaything remains safely outside. Let’s have this, away from the door so you can enter and leave without being bothered.

Next to the ashtray so all the antisocial shit stays out of the indoor space.

Coz I’m going to leave the third most expensive thing I own tied up outside with a load of dog hating crazy randoms sloshing around…..🙄

Isseywith2witchycats · 10/04/2026 18:42

I can't be a dog owner after being one all my life I work in a cat based charity shop and love it when someone brings a dog or two in always ask if friendly first but get to indulge In a fuss makes my day , but yes a cafe with lots of dogs in isn't me , and when I go to a large crowded event I don't understand why people don't leave their dogs at home, stressed dogs and crowds can lead to conflict

Tutorpuzzle · 10/04/2026 18:43

@Superhansrantowindsor Do you not have an M&S, or a John Lewis, or any hotels with a tearoom, or a gallery, or a NT property (lots of their cafes don’t allow dogs) or any of the other places mentioned on this thread, within striking distance? (And that’s before we look at any independents.)

Theft is the least of my concerns it is the noise pollution of my dog when he deems he has been betrayed and deserted that would make tieing him up outside a far worse option.

Many years ago, I popped into a shop after walking my parent's two lurchers, and I clipped them to a hook outside.
When I came out of the shop, they were gone. Someone told me they saw someone go up to them and unclip them. For no reason at all apart from being a twat.
Thankfully, they made their way home which not that far anyway. But it was awful. People are awful.

Bishopbrennansbum · 10/04/2026 18:45

Can’t stand that there are dogs absolutely everywhere nowadays. They should be tied up outside. Everyone has to own a dog these days.

Nearest national trust place is a 15 minute drive. No John Lewis or M&S. No hotels. We have lots of independent cafes but every single one allows dogs. My local pub has a dog friendly policy. Kids are kicked out at 9pm ( I have no issue with this at all) but the dogs are there the whole time.
