to think it’s time to ban dogs from shops and cafes?

I’ve just read a BBC article about the increase in dog attacks in the UK.

Dogs seem to be everywhere now. Cafes, shops, even places where food is being served. I’m not anti-dog at all, but I don’t really want to be eating or shopping surrounded by them.

It’s not just about preference either. Some people are allergic, some are genuinely scared, and others just don’t want to deal with barking, smells or dogs getting under their feet. The BBC piece even mentioned people feeling like they have to avoid going out because dogs are everywhere now.

I also don’t really get how it’s hygienic in places serving food. I know people say “well-behaved dogs are fine” but not all dogs are well-behaved, and staff aren’t exactly going to challenge every owner.

Before anyone says it, yes obviously assistance dogs are different and should be allowed. That’s not what I mean.

I just feel like we’ve swung too far the other way where dog owners expect to take them absolutely everywhere, and everyone else just has to put up with it.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to have more dog-free indoor spaces again?

I can't be a dog owner after being one all my life I work in a cat based charity shop and love it when someone brings a dog or two in always ask if friendly first but get to indulge In a fuss makes my day , but yes a cafe with lots of dogs in isn't me , and when I go to a large crowded event I don't understand why people don't leave their dogs at home, stressed dogs and crowds can lead to conflict

I remember going in a charity shop in Cardiff. The charity was a greyhound rescue, and they had a resident greyhound in the shop. It absolutely made my day 😍

FuglyBitch · 10/04/2026 18:46

Would 💯 be onboard with a ban on dogs in restaurants and cafes

Can’t stand that there are dogs absolutely everywhere nowadays. They should be tied up outside. Everyone has to own a dog these days.

Bit late to the party 😆

Which law is this? 😅

LISTLOSTLAST

not calling you a liar - I asked you to NAME the shopping center - just as I have done, the 4 biggest in the capital are no dogs

which one? Do everyone a service and name it so we know to keep away or go to it depending on our preference 😊

Drake Circus in Plymouth, but as I said, it’s not the only one and a very quick google could tell you that. I did mention in my post it’s not a ‘major’ one.
Also I’m not sure ‘they’re talking shite’ can be taken any other way than calling me a liar… but there we are.

Tutorpuzzle · 10/04/2026 18:51

Well, @Superhansrantowindsor , that does sound tricky, but it does show how valuable welcoming dog owners is to the local businesses.

(You don’t actually live in Windsor do you? I’m sure I could track down a few places there!)

Blueonblacktan · 10/04/2026 18:54

It’s really hard on my autistic son when we are out in cafes or pubs and someone’s dog starts barking. Usually those annoying little dogs. I wish people would stop bringing their dogs everywhere. I see on page one there has already been a ‘oh everyone loves my dog post’. The people who don’t like your dog there aren’t telling you love.

I am autistic, and I don't like the yappy dogs either. But I also can not handle loud children and Peppa Pig.

There is not a comment on page one saying that everyone loves their dog.

I wish someone would open a dog free cafe where I live. There isn’t a single one that bans dogs. I don’t think they should be banned everywhere but I would like just one place to be dog free.

If every cafe is dog friendly there can’t be many in each one and they’re often seated in the same area. Is it really that much of a problem?🤔

No I’m a long way from Windsor.
Yes I can totally see it makes good business sense to allow dogs since they are so popular as pets now but I think a business would be pleasantly surprised if they had the USP of being dog free. This thread and local Facebook groups show that it would be appreciated by many.

I do think barking dogs should be taken out, but I rarely come across them in cafes.

ThereAreOnlyShadesOfGrey · 10/04/2026 19:01

If people started tying their dogs up outside it would only take hours before the outraged threads started to appear on mn.

“How dare people tie their dogs up outside unsupervised. Don’t they realise that all dogs are dangerous animals waiting to tear all our children limb from limb? Ban them immediately.”

Bratty children are far more of a problem in restaurants and shops.

Children should be tethered to their parents at all times to stop them running around.

While we’re at it, speakerphones should be banned, and interacting with any device outside the home should only be allowed with headphones.

White Rose Centre in Leeds. Loads of dogs.

The thing is as they are dog friendly, a dog can come in at any time. I really don’t like dogs. I just have to pu up with it but I can marine for those with allergies it must be a nightmare. I would simply find it more pleasant if there was a totally dog free cafe.

Have you actually found a dog hair in food served in an establishment?
I've only once found a hair in my food and that was clearly a human one. 🙂

Same. We often eat in dog friendly pubs and not once have I found a dog hair in my food.

I had my dog for 15 years, and I never found a dog hair in my food in my own house. She was not banned from anywhere.

I’m sure it would be very popular from now until October. But, and this is entirely from my anecdotal evidence, come the dripping, freezing, November to March period they would probably struggle without the dog walking clientele.

But keep going with your Facebook campaign, I think you’re the first person on this thread that’s actually doing something to get a dog free cafe.

LotusMandala · 10/04/2026 19:36

I agree with you. Every time I’m out walking, people seem to think I want their dog jumping at me or that i find their dog as cute as they do.

I fucking don’t. Cool that you do, but I don’t. Especially not when I’m eating.

Are you a mind reader? I thought my dog was amazing, but I am curious as to how you think I was wanting you to think the same too.

You are far more likely to catch something horrible from a human than a dog.

'We also regularly walk our dog in 2 local cemeteries'

Dogs aren't allowed in our local cemetery thankfully, even if they were allowed it'd be the last place I'd want to walk ours out of respect. It just doesn't seem right does it dogs sniffing about and toileting in such an important place for the bereaved.

Some dog owners just do not get it, walk them and leave them cosy at home. Show some respect and consideration for other people.

We do walk our dog, sometimes in a park, sometimes woods, sometimes a country park, sometimes along the canal, sometimes around street and often in a cemetery. We want him to experience different places, sights and smells.

Obviously we would never let him toilet on or near a grave. The two cemeteries we go to have quite a lot of grass areas and one has some woodland in it. I just don't see what is disrespectful about walking a dog there.

After we have had our walk we like to go for maybe lunch or just a coffee so why would we trek home to leave our dog and then go out again especially if we are already in or near a town?

He doesn't want or need to be cosy at home all the time. He can be cosy at home with us in the evening. Also we show plenty of respect and consideration for other people thank you

If you choose to bring a dog to a public place and have to leave it outside of that place, it’s just a risk you have to take. Even locked cars are easily stolen.

I pointed out that many Swiss shops have clips outside to attach dogs to, that demonstrates that it’s a viable solution.

Maybe if you feel you need a lock, dogs could be locked to posts with a bike lock if a clip isn’t enough and dog owners don’t want to pay to use a cage.

Well when I choose to take my dog to a public place I never leave him outside. If he cannot go into a place then I don't go into it either. No way on earth am I going to leave him outside for some arsehole to steal, kick or whatever. Far too many lunatics about

I took my dog into places she was allowed. If there are clips somewhere then that implies that dogs are not allowed in the establishments.
But on MN, taking a dog into somewhere that welcomes dogs is still wrong.

You make a whinny post, we are entitled to respond and disagree. It’s also really boring to keep wanging on about the same thing week after week.
We get some people don’t like dogs, that’s fine for them, but they don’t get to set the rules for other people. We live in a (largely) free and capitalistic company, if a business owner wants to allow dogs they can and your only impact on that is to choose not to use them. If allowing dogs was depressing their business they wouldn’t do so, ergo you are in the minority.

What is whinny about it?

If it so boring, don't join in.
