to think it’s time to ban dogs from shops and cafes?

I’ve just read a BBC article about the increase in dog attacks in the UK.

Dogs seem to be everywhere now. Cafes, shops, even places where food is being served. I’m not anti-dog at all, but I don’t really want to be eating or shopping surrounded by them.

It’s not just about preference either. Some people are allergic, some are genuinely scared, and others just don’t want to deal with barking, smells or dogs getting under their feet. The BBC piece even mentioned people feeling like they have to avoid going out because dogs are everywhere now.

I also don’t really get how it’s hygienic in places serving food. I know people say “well-behaved dogs are fine” but not all dogs are well-behaved, and staff aren’t exactly going to challenge every owner.

Before anyone says it, yes obviously assistance dogs are different and should be allowed. That’s not what I mean.

I just feel like we’ve swung too far the other way where dog owners expect to take them absolutely everywhere, and everyone else just has to put up with it.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to have more dog-free indoor spaces again?

Oh yes what a good idea to leave your dog outside unattended. Ever heard of dog thefts?

If they are ever introduced can we also have the screaming pain in the arse children tied to them as well?

People leave cars outside unattended. Sometimes they get stolen. But they don’t drive their cars into Tesco with them just in case do they ?

I mean, you could ask for cages instead if clips aren’t secure enough.

Not sure why you mentioned children, this thread is about dogs.

Tableforjoan · 10/04/2026 17:59

Oh yes I don’t want children ruining riot either or load squealing also I don’t want to hear pepper pig while eating in a restaurant.

10 dogs like ours sure. I'm happy to see well-trained and well-handled dogs in public too.
Sadly IME many owners are not as responsible and capable as you are.

Sadly so many parents are not responsible either. Children running around when there is hot food and drink being carried by people. Children playing chase round shops and eating places. Children screaming and their parents never taking them outside.

It doesn't matter to me at all, it's a discussion, but as I say, I know Bath well and those without dogs are never in the minority.

Less than half of Bath households own a dog.
At any given time Central Bath is at least 50% tourists, most of them from overseas, so they don't have dogs.

Visitors to Bath come to visit museums, go to the theatre, visit the pump rooms, thermae spa, No1 Royal cresent etc. They can't take dogs there. They don't have dogs with them.

You were not in a minority.

Oh, I must have hallucinated the dogs then. My mistake.

You sound really odd.
I'd still quite like to know if you generally go round telling people 'you did not see x' and 'you were not in a minority' with such authority.

I don't disagree. Many kids in cafes etc are a public nuisance.

Dog cages.
BINGO!

You can’t take dogs in shopping centres. I’m in London, you can’t take dogs in either of the huge Westfields, Bluewater, Lakeside, Canary Wharf shopping centre. These are the shopping centers closest to me and they are massive and no dogs !

you can take dogs in John Lewis and Liberty in the West end (individual shops) so people blathering on about shopping centers are talking SHITE.

Hi, I was someone who mentioned a shopping centre. Certainly not talking shite, give it a quick google if you think so. I can understand people disagreeing with an argument but calling me a liar just because the shopping centres near you aren’t dog friendly is a bit silly.

Well cars get locked don't they? Also some dogs are stolen to be used for dog fighting and some so they can try and get money from the owner to have them returned. No responsible dog owner with even half a brain would leave a dog outside a shop or restaurant.

I mentioned children because they are just as annoying if not more so and we all have to put up with them don't we. People go on about dogs sitting on chairs which I have never seen but I have seen plenty of children standing on chairs. I saw 2 today in 2 different eating places but oh I guess that is ok?

BINGO!

Like the old instore trolly bays. Pay £1 and store your trolly while you go to the cafe.

But dog crates haha that’s actually pretty funny.

ConstanzeMozart · 10/04/2026 18:04

mydogisthebest · 10/04/2026 17:58

I mean you must be unlucky that you see dogs on chairs, barking, wandering around not on a lead because I have never seen it even though we go to eating places a few times a week and have done for quite a while.

We also regularly walk our dog in 2 local cemeteries and, again, have never seen a dog offlead. Maybe we just live in an area with a better class of dog owner!

Not unlucky, just that statistically I guess many people have dogs, and a high proportion of them are poor owners.
In my local cemetery there was a public consultation on whether or not to allow dogs off leads. Many people opposed it, but sadly the 'my dog needs to run free even over your ancestor's grave or birds' nests brigade were vocal and quite aggressive and won out.
So yes, you may well live in an area with a better class of dog owner. And/or a council with the balls to stand up to entitled people.

Good argument when faced with facts @ConstanzeMozart “you sound really odd”.

As ridiculous as all your claims, really.

I believe I know Bath better than you.

Never, in all my lifetime's knowledge of Bath, the population there, the make up of the tourist market have I ever known more people in Bath city centre to have a dog than not have a dog. I'd say it's much less than 1 in 10 or less in the city centre and I can put my hand on my heart to that.

Were you at a dog show perhaps?

You must have had an unusual day. We know Bath well, used to live there and don’t see many, we don’t take ours because it’s so dog unfriendly. I think others must do the same. It does limit how often we can visit.

If you choose to bring a dog to a public place and have to leave it outside of that place, it’s just a risk you have to take. Even locked cars are easily stolen.

I pointed out that many Swiss shops have clips outside to attach dogs to, that demonstrates that it’s a viable solution.

Maybe if you feel you need a lock, dogs could be locked to posts with a bike lock if a clip isn’t enough and dog owners don’t want to pay to use a cage.

I really don't know what else to say. It was the Easter period. It was generally busy, and quite sunny and warm. Maybe more people came/brought their dogs with them?

Yes it’s full of tourists and apartment dwellers. All those Georgian buildings are flats. Obviously those just outside will have gardens but it’s such an awkward place to take a dog so like many we don’t.

Gloriia · 10/04/2026 18:10

'We also regularly walk our dog in 2 local cemeteries'

Dogs aren't allowed in our local cemetery thankfully, even if they were allowed it'd be the last place I'd want to walk ours out of respect. It just doesn't seem right does it dogs sniffing about and toileting in such an important place for the bereaved.

Some dog owners just do not get it, walk them and leave them cosy at home. Show some respect and consideration for other people.

Were you at a dog show perhaps?
Sorry, is that a serious question?

I can only say it again: I saw a lot of dogs over a few days/week in central Bath. At a couple of points I explicitly thought about how many people had them.

LighthouseLola · 10/04/2026 18:14

The comparison to children always comes up.

Noisy children are a nuisance.
Dogs are a bigger nuisance.
It doesn't have to be one or the other.

LighthouseLola · 10/04/2026 18:15

My dd lives in Bath and the place is heaving with them. You didn't hallucinate.

LISTLOSTLAST

not calling you a liar - I asked you to NAME the shopping center - just as I have done, the 4 biggest in the capital are no dogs

which one? Do everyone a service and name it so we know to keep away or go to it depending on our preference 😊

This is a new on me. Dog owners get pounced on as soon as they mention badly behaved kids in public. But here we likening dogs to cars.
You could not make it up!

BreatheAndFocus · 10/04/2026 18:18

YABVU. There are far, FAR more shops and cafes that don’t allow dogs than do. You’re spoilt for choice.

So sick of this tedious and miserable crap each day 🙄 🙄

Or are you just bored during the Easter Hols?
