Next door neighbours, a married couple in late 30s with 2 young kids, nice quiet family, the wife is leader of local council and v ambitious, likely to stand as MP somewhere by time of next election probably. A few months ago we noticed another guy around there all the time - they were having work done and assumed he was a handyman. Next thing we know husband has moved out and 'handyman' - definitely 'bit of rough' type has started staying overnight for weekends.

Moved to the island? What island?

If this is Hampshire/S of England, 'The Island' is the Isle of Wight. All my family use that term.

I know for a fact that a recently engaged man is still married to his first wife and is hoping to pull of a sneaky divorce before their wedding in 2027.

My aunts now ex tried this , they were estranged for years he moved back local to us and started a relationship with someone we know , by sheer chance we met him at a wedding of a neighbour, poor woman had no idea he was still married . It was very close to the wedding when he turned up at my dm door to get her to contact her sister to make her aign off on her end . She didn't but I think there is something that can be done if one refuses because he did marry the other woman in the end . Not sure if they are still together

For the win ⬆️

I agree it wins! If that was me you wouldn’t get that information out of me even under torture! 😱 How did you find out @Penwell?
edited to add agreement!

im similar, i wish i had like command of the entire earths communication systems and could quantify and process everyones secrets / affairs etc

Can I say if you like that kind of thing, consider genealogy as a hobby. You’ve got to use lateral thought, be forensic in your approach, and be absolutely insanely good at logic puzzles - and then you have to get creative - spot the lies, the coverups the inconsistencies and the skeletons. It’s like a massive CSI left brain right brain mash up! Think you’d like it!

Along similar lines, I went to a wedding last month and one of the other guests was a very unremarkable, particularly unattractive, very rude, man in his 70's (Maybe late 60's), who was there with both his wife and his girlfriend..both younger than him and very beautiful, and the three of them were very open about it like it was completely normal...I couldn't take my eyes off them!

That would consume me for the entire wedding. I once spotted similar whilst poolside on holiday and was unable to get on with my tanning for rubbernecking the situation and reporting on it to my husband.

These stories can’t stay secret forever

My dad did one and found out he had a son in England

Would you ever say anything

Whats she like with her husband, are they happy? (Not an excuse)

I would have said they were happy right until I saw her with his Brother - I won’t say anything and I have not told my other half nor am I likely ever to as he would be really distressed. I feel weird when I see sil- we aren’t close so I keep my distance naturally. I personally find her husband twattish and would suspect he cheats as he is flirtatious to the point of cringe! His brother is just lovely.

My MIL used to shag her 1st cousin, and only stopped when his Dad told him to stop, as he was also her Dad, so they were half siblings.

Do they live in the Appalachian mountains?

I'm an academic. I know of two instances of married professors sleeping with PhD students. Contrary to what you might expect, they were female professors sleeping with male PhD students. Even more awkwardly, both of their husbands were also professors in the same department. One of the cuckolded husbands was on the thesis committee of the student who was sleeping with his wife. It was widely known. So awkward.

Oooooo which uni? I worked at one in the North West for 25 years. Saw loads of this but yes usually male academics partnering with female post grad students or post docs.

I just remembered one of the professors wives came to the dept one lunchtime and emptied bin bags full of his stuff onto the staff room floor. He was having an affair with an ex post grad who was now a member of teaching staff. Ace! It was talked about for years after the divorce. The affair couple did stay together though, they seemed devoted.

He must have something large, and isn't afraid to use it.
My guess is bank account 😏

Many years ago, I was an HR manager. There was a pastoral side to my role as well as all the usual legal/recruitment/ etc stuff.

On one memorable morning a male employee asked to see me, very upset.

He had arrived home earlier than planned the previous evening to find his wife in bed with his mother. 😳

I once knew a bloke who was married and they had 4 kids together

He ran the local newsagents and id been in the day before, buying the kids sweets and magazines

The next day it was shut-i asked my mate (who knew the family well) why it was shut (thinking illness or something) and she said that he'd been having an affair drumroll with his mil!

It had been going on since he'd met his wife and they'd finally ran off together and moved to the other side of the country

He'd abandoned them-didnt see them or pay for them-hed just fucked off into the sunset, arm in arm with her

18 months or so,the mil sadly died so he came back, got back with his wife and they are still together, not having got a divorce!

The kids are all grown up now and they all act like it didnt happen!

If I hadn't watched it unfold with my own eyes,I wouldn't have believed it

Or be hung like a horse 😂

🤣🤣
He could be...but unless he also had the face and body of Chris Hemsworth, the bank account of Bill Gates, and a brilliant sense of humour, I'd definitely still pass 😂

I am in a loving relationship with my friends ex. Technically we haven’t done anything wrong but I am dreading telling her (Théy barely communicate so I feel it has to come from me). It’s been 2 years and lots of other friends know, including my ex.

Two friends I know through a hobby have clearly fallen in love/emotional affair at least.
It's so obvious to me, they light up each other's lives.
He is in an unhappy marriage.
Until a couple of weeks ago she was in an unhappy relationship but has just split.
I'm watching developments with interest.

A family who live near me claim that their 20YO DD is away at college and has been for a couple of years.

She actually spent a year in a psych unit and is now in specialist accommodation with a high level of support.

CollsR · 09/04/2026 16:03

My Aunt was in a very controlling marriage. After 30 years marriage she divorced him, got half the money and moved to the city where her kids and grandkids were living. The city was cheap and she bought a 3 bedroom home. She is frugal. Her controlling ex used a lot of his money on nothing & then 5 years later wanted to move to the same city as his ex-wife, kids and grandkids. Houses in the city had become more expensive. He asked to stay in the spare room of his ex-wife. 10 years later he is still there as her lodger. He has to pay rent, mow the lawn and keep things clean or he's out. She is now in control & fair about it. A very strange set up but she's now like a flower in bloom. He's only boastful and too much when she's not around.

Oh God @LakieLady that's so sad. Poor girl and poor parents. What a tragedy. How did you find out? Could you offer support to them in any way?

My sister’s son is the result of a long running affair with her business partner. Both of them are married. Neither spouse knows. She often takes her son to meet her business partner and his children in the park.

Truly awful. The poor child.

my dad also had affairs and a second family. We’ve never recovered as a family, we never will. I would never cover up something like this. You are all as guilty as your sister imho.
