Just got this email this morning. Absolutely gutted - my kindle was bought for me by my ds for Christmas 2011 when he was a student- still works perfectly.

Planned obsolescence. Such a waste

Papyrophile · 08/04/2026 08:56

I must use mine a lot more than you. I have exhausted three since the first one.

FrothyCothy · 08/04/2026 09:00

Is yours definitely one of the versions no longer being supported? I thought mine would be due to age but when I looked up devices on my account it’s not

LIZS · 08/04/2026 09:00

Mine too. Keyboard version. Sad

JulietSierra · 08/04/2026 09:01

Oh I’d be gutted too. I retired my original Kindle even though it was working well because I really needed a Paperwhite as I like to read myself to sleep. It seems so unfair that they’re more or less forcing you to buy a new kindle though. I guess I’ve got a year or two before they do it to me.

This is why they want you to migrate to Netflix and Spotify and Kindle and all the rest. You will not own the art; they can cut it off at any time.
I have DVD that are 25 years old, records that are 50 years old and books that are 100 years old. They can't be cut off.

To be fair they’re not cutting off the books, she can still read them on her existing kindle or any new one she buys.

Echobelly · 08/04/2026 09:06

How annoying...I never managed to have a kindle last more than 3 years, they always gave up the ghost. I also hate the planned obsolescence thing.

I switched to Kobo about a year ago in order to avoid using Amazon as much as possible. I prefer it partly because sleep mode actually displays the cover of the book you are reading. With Kindle, especially if I'd bought the book on a whim I sometimes couldn't remember what the book I was reading was called or who it was by! Plus, the Kindle advertised when in sleep mode and 90% of the time displayed crime, romance or mum porn books - about the only 3 genres that I never, ever read, which irked me.

That’s awful, mine must have been bought just after the cut off because I haven’t had an email. Would be annoyed if I was affected because my kindle works perfectly

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 08/04/2026 09:11

I really resent this sort of thing. Totally profit driven. Perfectly good devices junked. No option to return for recycling.

But there will be a point where you can't buy a dvd player so a dvd will be useless to you.

Agree, it is obsolescence for the sake of profit.

FortyFacedFuckers · 08/04/2026 09:19

I got the same OP, it’s extremely annoying, I use my kindle 3/4 times a year when on holiday as the rest of the time I prefer books and it still works perfectly but they currently have 20% off the cheapest one and the email gave another 20% off code which works on top of the discount currently on Amazon so I have just purchased another one!

SpacesNotTabs · 08/04/2026 09:20

LIZS · 08/04/2026 09:16

Agree, it is obsolescence for the sake of profit.

14 years is a long time to support old software, it's the price of having new features and getting security updates. The device isn't going to stop working.

WipersThymes · 08/04/2026 09:22

The last couple of times I've downloaded more than one book my current Kindle has jammed. It got going again after a hot toddy and a good sleep but I feared I'd have to replace it soon, so I wasn't overly surprised to get the email.

Can I ask which one you bought @FortyFacedFuckers ? I don't want all singing, all dancing, I just want to be able to download and read my books, I don't want internet access from it.

Ah, you are agreeing with me. The more whizz-bang the technology, the sooner it becomes obsolete or they make it become obsolete.

The government could ban books and forcibly cease them from homes for burning too 🤷‍♀️

Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim · 08/04/2026 09:26

That’s awful. I use my library and get a new book most weeks. I use my kindle occasionally but I won’t be replacing it when it is obsolete. I’d rather continue with the library.

SisterThorn · 08/04/2026 09:26

I would use Calibre to load books and not use Amazon at all. You can get books from your library, and other places.

I think its a bloody cheek to stop you being able to load books

FortyFacedFuckers · 08/04/2026 09:27

Just the very basic one, it’s currently down to £74.99 and with the further discount I got it for £59.99

You can borrow ebooks as well as paper ones

Good tip if you don’t live in a convenient distance from your local library

IdentityCris · 08/04/2026 09:30

I use a Kindle app on my mini iPad, it works very well. I suppose my iPad will become obsolete at some point but I may well have replaced it by then anyway.
