identical twins?

I've always thought that identical twins were usually quite plain looking but obviously kept this to myself. Recently a friend of mine found out that she was expecting twins and rang me up all excited to tell me. During the conversation she said "my Mum is upset cos they are going to be identical and that means they won't be as attractive their older siblings"

I asked her how she felt about this hurtful comment and she replied that her mum was right - how often do you see good looking twins? and you are lucky if one is even attractive.

I know obviously that looks are such a small part of a child's make up but I'm the wrong person to try and boost my friends confidence on this even though I have tried.

What do other Mumsnetters think?

I can't honestly see how identical twins could be any worse looking than anyone else. It's not like attractiveness is held on a piece of DNA that gets divided down the middle, therefore leaving identicals only half as attractive as a singleton.

Maybe it's the duplication that takes the edge off the novelty of twins' looks for some people.

YAB, if not exactly unreasonable, then a bit sweeping in your generalisations.....
(No, I don't have twins.....have seen attractive twins, and ugly twins.....attractive single children, and ugly single children.....)

I used to go out drinking with one of a set of identical twins.

She was stunningly gorgeous - to the point where every time we walked into a pub, it would go quiet and everyone would look at her like this:

I presume her sister looked at least similar as they were identical.

And a woman I used to work with had identical girls and they also were gorgeous - not in the same stunning jaw dropping way as my mate, but deffo attractive.

In fact, I don't think that personally I have ever met a pair of unattractive identical twins...

I have identical twin brothers... they were utterly gorgeous when they were babies and children. And I suppose they are quite good looking now - never have trouble with the ladeez anyway We also had as friends twin girls, who were very pretty.
That is a very sweeping statement, Keepitprivate. And IME untrue.

I've known some gorgeous identical twins (both genders). I don't see why being a twin would make any difference to your looks?

to be honest when my mum had me and my brother twins no one was concerned about how attractive we would be just if we would be healthy if my mum would be ok through pregnancy lots of attractive people but looks fade you need more than that in life health, great personality why should all that matter now how they will look

i know a set of very attractive identical twins (well alomost indentical one is now blonde got sick of being identical )

can i just point out mary kate and ashley. those twins who played jessica and elizabeth on sweet valley high the sister sister/twitches twins? all attractive twins who have made a very good living off the back of being identical twins.

i think looks are the last thing to be worrying about right now risks are higher in multiple births for twins as well as mum especially identical due to twin to twin transfusion

dont be shallow and concentrate on looks i was born with big red birth mark on my face still cute but my mum wasnt upset to have ugly baby she told everyone it was beauty spot and all the kids wanted one its gone now have no sign of it at all

anything in life can take your looks away to concentrate on that one thing is not good

health of mother and baby first she has only just told she is pregnant im sure she would be so upset to think your all concerned how ugly the kids will be over the health of her and her babies

be supportive babies are always gorgeous and there are not really many people in life that are truly ugly only in other people eyes who want to feel better about themselves

My sister has identical triplet girlfriends and they are all very attractive indeed

I have always thought the complete opposite. I have never known an unattractive pair of identical twins! All the identical twins i've ever known, five sets in total have always been beautiful. This is one of the reasons when I was younger I always wanted to be an identical twin.
