I cannot understand why people get pissed at other people celebrating minor 'special days'

Easter - it's not Xmas
Bank holidays - it's just a bank holiday
Boxing day - well it's not Christmas day

FUCK OFFF

If people want to use any excuse to get family together and have a great time, why are people pissing in this?

I don't understand.

Minor holidays CAN be a cause of celebration!!!!!

Getting in to the holiday spirit I see @ColinOfficeTrolley

Screamingabdabz · 05/04/2026 11:01

I think it’s unnecessary consumerism and insufferable social media bullshit that people are ‘pissing’ on. Not humble family get togethers.

SixSevenShutUp · 05/04/2026 11:03

Minor holiday? Excuse me, but this is the major festival of Christianity. It's sad that you don't know that.

Indeed.
Most people don't realise this, though.

ColinOfficeTrolley · 05/04/2026 11:13

Yes but if people use bank holidays to get together, cook and share food, spread love and joy with their families. Taking advantage of when people are off work, why would others get shitty about it???

What are you doing today @ColinOfficeTrolley ?

Whatsnextforbea · 05/04/2026 11:14

Aside from being angry on mumsnet

Because some people like to think it makes them superior. It just makes them look like moaning twats to me.

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 05/04/2026 11:17

@ColinOfficeTrolley , Easter is the most important celebration in the Christian calendar, much more so than Christmas.

tnorfotkcab · 05/04/2026 11:17

Because people are weird and joyless, especially on Mumsnet.

They feel that birthdays should be ignored after about 10.
And they seem to think that everything is modern American import. General opinion seems to be:
Halloween.... nobody ever went trick or treating ever before 2010....
Easter... Nobody ever got more than a solitary egg etc

And so what? No we dont all of these events and no we dont post on social media but what do people care so much? So someone thinks another person is twat? So what they are a twat it doesn't effect anyone else they are happy doing what they do so why would they care is someone thinks they are a twat

This 'oh you cant do what you are doing because i am jealous or how it makes me look' makes mw think the person complaining has the maturity of a child

AintNoPunshineWhenShesGone · 05/04/2026 11:22

I'm happy to get pissed for any reason 🥴🍷

MrMucker · 05/04/2026 11:25

For all the shit people around and all the bad in the world, it puzzles me that you choose to be so angry at precisely this.

The people complaining about other people enjoying Easter their way are the joyless twats.

How many threads will there be on MN that the MiL dared to buy their kids a chocolate egg?

Place your bets.

LastHotel · 05/04/2026 11:32

No one is objecting to anyone celebrating, getting together with friends and family or having a good time.

You seem very angry at nothing at all.

DoingANewThing · 05/04/2026 11:36

All bank holidays are a good thing 😊

Enjoy!

What are you doing today @ColinOfficeTrolley ?

I used the Saturday to do just this. I thought it would be the best day so people didn't have to use the day to recover.

They had an extra day. It's a beautiful weekend where many people get the Friday AND Monday off

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 05/04/2026 11:38

Totally missing the point of your thread, but your title sounds like beginning of a points of view letter

1000StrawberryLollies · 05/04/2026 11:39

I totally agree, OP, and I think that every time I see a pearl-clutching thread about it. People moan about all the depressing stuff going on in the world, then they moan even harder about people trying to inject a bit of joy into life by celebrating things.

If anything, I don't think we have enough seasonal festivals and celebrations. If we had kept more of them going, Christmas would perhaps not have turned into the massive commercial juggernaut it currently is. Marking the turning of the seasons is a good, normal, human thing to do imo. Some people have a big festive meal for extended family and give their dc an Easter egg, have an egg hunt and maybe buy them a few spring clothes too? How awful - how dare they?! Hmm

Fwiw I haven't bought a single Easter-related thing this year, not even a chocolate egg, as ds isn't fussed. It's 18th birthday tomorrow and we are going out for dinner.

Waterdust · 05/04/2026 11:39

I dont do any holidays.
If other people want to go waste money on it let them do it.

I think it’s great to celebrate anything but unfortunately many people are manipulated by companies who make them believe that they have to spend lots of money to do so.

It is always biased towards women too, who feel they need to spend lots of money to be a good mum/host.

Then you have social media which is so fake and children and parents look at it and believe they need to live up to it and it’s just a constant cycle of feeling guilty and trying to compete with something that isn’t real.

Celebrate how you want.
Don’t spend too much money.
Don’t post pictures on SM.
Then you know you’ll have a good day.

TheChosenTwo · 05/04/2026 11:42

We aren’t religious and have taken the excuse of the long weekend to indulge in things we enjoy doing. Plus got family round this afternoon for an early evening roast. That’s about it in terms of Easter ‘celebrations’ for us. We went and saw mil this morning which was also lovely.
i don’t know or care about how other people are choosing to spend their long weekend if not working, it doesn’t impact on my life at all!
