I cannot understand why people get pissed at other people celebrating minor 'special days'

Easter - it's not Xmas
Bank holidays - it's just a bank holiday
Boxing day - well it's not Christmas day

FUCK OFFF

If people want to use any excuse to get family together and have a great time, why are people pissing in this?

I don't understand.

Minor holidays CAN be a cause of celebration!!!!!

For all the shit people around and all the bad in the world, it puzzles me that you choose to be so angry at precisely this.

I think it’s a thread based on the OP of another thread today.

I adore my family and love getting together with them.

We are never ever “humble” though… whatever the hell that looks like!

it was @Screamingabdabz comment I was responding to "I think it’s unnecessary consumerism and insufferable social media bullshit that people are ‘pissing’ on. Not humble family get togethers."

Yes, I know

GentleSheep · 05/04/2026 14:37

Easter is certainly not a minor holiday. It's not every day that a man is raised from the dead and provides salvation for all who believe in him!

Some would go as far and say there has never been a day a man has risen from the dead.

BerryTwister · 05/04/2026 14:57

OP why oh why oh why are you getting so upset about people having their own opinions?

user1476613140 · 05/04/2026 14:59

I care if it affects my sleep and next door had a friend staying overnight and they made a huge amount of noise. Til early hours. So we've made sure to be watching action films from 6.30am. Not sure why they do this. Last time was Mother's Day weekend. They are selfish f*&ks.

Dollymylove · 05/04/2026 15:04

It matters not one jot what people do, where they go, what they eat, how much money they spend, someone on MN will come along and say its wrong 😅

I'm happy to get pissed for any reason 🥴🍷

Me too 🍺

I think it’s the commercialisation and what feels like obligatory consumerism that gets on people’s nerves.

Yes, but I wish people would just grow up and act like adults. If no one bought the seasonal tat in the shops, they would stop selling them. If people want to buy them that's fine too. It seems to be the people who have the mindset of a 12 year old that cause the issues - it's soo unfair I can't afford 20 eggs and spend 100s on house decorations. I've spent all day looking at influencers showing off their loot, why can't I be exactly like them waaaa

1000StrawberryLollies · 05/04/2026 15:17

I think it’s great to celebrate anything but unfortunately many people are manipulated by companies who make them believe that they have to spend lots of money to do so.

This is a popular complaint, but I don't think it's as true as people make out, certainlyfor Easter. Most people surely just buy chocolate eggs. It's not that expensive. Spending time with extended family and having a nice meal isn't advert-driven. Sure, you can buy other stuff but it's not the norm.

ManintheCity · 05/04/2026 16:10

This. Easter Day is the most important day in the christian year; not Christmas Day as many people think!

Whatsnextforbea · 05/04/2026 16:25

Throwing in some Easter eggs as I’m perusing the aisles at Sainsbury’s - yep I’m a “victim”

Boomer55 · 05/04/2026 16:28

ColinOfficeTrolley · 05/04/2026 11:13

Yes but if people use bank holidays to get together, cook and share food, spread love and joy with their families. Taking advantage of when people are off work, why would others get shitty about it???

I think it’s more about it seeming to be more about social media now. A simple family get together doesn’t require applauding or likes. 🤷‍♀️

DancingOctopus · 05/04/2026 17:18

You are right. I am just getting excited to plan my children's " May Day boxes".

Harmonypus · 07/04/2026 02:45

tnorfotkcab · 05/04/2026 11:17

Because people are weird and joyless, especially on Mumsnet.

They feel that birthdays should be ignored after about 10.
And they seem to think that everything is modern American import. General opinion seems to be:
Halloween.... nobody ever went trick or treating ever before 2010....
Easter... Nobody ever got more than a solitary egg etc

Eeerrrrr, some of us used to go trick or treating here in the UK back in the 70s, so it's not exactly an American import

Riapia · 07/04/2026 02:57

If freedom means anything at all it means being able to tell people things they may not wish to hear.

mondaytosunday · 07/04/2026 03:07

Who’s getting angry? I’ve seen people wonder if we need Mothers/Father’s Day or Valentines, but not things like Easter or Christmas other than mention how grabby the latter has become. But angry? No.

AmbientMeltdown · 07/04/2026 03:15

op,you need a break from the internet Grin

SkipAd · 07/04/2026 06:09

Surely the point is, some of us see this as a second Christmas, some see it as a chocolate festival, some see it as the Christian festival, some it’s part of Passover?
I think that I can understand OPs point, that everyone on SM criticises others way of doing it.
It really should be about how every family wants to do it and show their love to each other as opposed to how it looks on Insta or Facebook.
We are mid renovations which means we couldn’t have anyone to stay this weekend and I have absolutely loved the lack of responsibility and cleaning etc. I have watched all 10 episodes of the other Bennett sister.
I do admit I (internally) eye roll when it turns out that your lovely family Easter is all about the likes but"…………..
you do you, I am certainly doing me

Davros · 07/04/2026 08:24

@Harmonypus are you in Scotland or Northern Ireland? Only asking as I do not remember Trick or Treating in England in the 70s but much, much later. When we went to Ireland in October half term, Halloween was a big thing with games at home and trying to scare eachother but no Trick or Treating then either

RunningOnEmptyish · 07/04/2026 08:27

Whatsnextforbea · 05/04/2026 10:56

Getting in to the holiday spirit I see @ColinOfficeTrolley

🤣😂🤣

Morepositivemum · 07/04/2026 08:29

I hate people saying ‘it’s just a day’ about Christmas- yes but it’s also a two week celebration which is the only time our widely scattered family get to meet up!!

5128gap · 07/04/2026 08:35

I agree. The recent spate of people on here telling non Christians they're not doing Easter right is annoying. I wouldn't choose to take two days of annual leave in unpredictable April weather. Given I've no choice in the matter, I think people for whom Easter has 'meaning' should at least have the courtesy to let those who have it forced upon us spend it as we wish.

tnorfotkcab · 07/04/2026 08:45

Harmonypus · 07/04/2026 02:45

Eeerrrrr, some of us used to go trick or treating here in the UK back in the 70s, so it's not exactly an American import

... that's exactly what I'm saying.

People seem to think everything is a recent American import when it isn't...
