I cannot understand why people get pissed at other people celebrating minor 'special days'

Easter - it's not Xmas
Bank holidays - it's just a bank holiday
Boxing day - well it's not Christmas day

FUCK OFFF

If people want to use any excuse to get family together and have a great time, why are people pissing in this?

I don't understand.

Minor holidays CAN be a cause of celebration!!!!!

I dont do any holidays.
If other people want to go waste money on it let them do it.

Eh? Waste money on what? Nothing about celebrating or spending time with friends and family necessitates spending any money, let alone wasting it.

MagicalAnimal · 05/04/2026 11:45

Whatsnextforbea · 05/04/2026 10:56

Getting in to the holiday spirit I see @ColinOfficeTrolley

I think @ColinOfficeTrolley is in the holiday spirit and is complaining about people who try to put you down if you do that??

I'm happy to get pissed for any reason 🥴🍷

No better time than a bank holiday weekend. Definitely a common time to be pissed! Cheers 🍻

What I see as a waste of money, others dont.
We are all different.
Some may think I wast money on going abroad as much as I can, instead of once or twice a year.

If that's what people want to do so be it.

Exactly. Better than getting pissed off, which appears to be what the OP means.

I think it’s great to celebrate anything but unfortunately many people are manipulated by companies who make them believe that they have to spend lots of money to do so.

It is always biased towards women too, who feel they need to spend lots of money to be a good mum/host.

Then you have social media which is so fake and children and parents look at it and believe they need to live up to it and it’s just a constant cycle of feeling guilty and trying to compete with something that isn’t real.

Celebrate how you want.
Don’t spend too much money.
Don’t post pictures on SM.
Then you know you’ll have a good day.

Yes, they are. Basically if it's some shite being flogged to you as a new tradition in Home Bargains or B&M you don't need it.
There was a thread here last year from someone who had seen some reels (assume TikTok or Instagram) about massive Easter Baskets and was asking if hers were adequate. Comparing your efforts against other parents is a sad way to live.

InNewYorkNoShoes · 05/04/2026 12:01

I always have a low key Easter. I love that other people go all out, if they can afford it it’s good for the economy. It’s nice to have some joy at a pretty joyless time.
I don’t like the Instagram posts showing all the Sephora products and new outfits as it might make other people feel shit if they can’t afford it - it’s wonderful if you can do it but if you can only afford an egg or two then it’s ok too, your children will still have a great Easter.

singthing · 05/04/2026 12:03

Anyone else of a certain age suddenly think of Esther Rantzen reading out viewer letters on That's Life when they read the title of the thread?

How is that relevant? I don’t understand.

Owly11 · 05/04/2026 12:07

Easter is the biggest day of the Christian calendar, so for many people it's huge anyway. It's not a minor holiday.

I was thinking the same.

I have the same level of rage the OP currently has for people for that omit the 'off' from pissed in this context.

forgivingfiggy · 05/04/2026 12:18

I think it’s the commercialisation and what feels like obligatory consumerism that gets on people’s nerves.

Yes… starting a thread about how pissed off I am at others is very much a sign you’re revelling in the holiday spirit!

ColinOfficeTrolley · 05/04/2026 11:36

I used the Saturday to do just this. I thought it would be the best day so people didn't have to use the day to recover.

They had an extra day. It's a beautiful weekend where many people get the Friday AND Monday off

Huh? I asked what you were doing today? Aside from getting angry on mumsnet

Guessing you don’t have children? Maybe live alone? Not very happy? Because to not celebrate any holiday… is, unusual @Waterdust

Doingtheboxerbeat · 05/04/2026 13:50

Four days off work for most people s a celebration in itself .

TheGrimSmile · 05/04/2026 13:55

Pissed off. Not pissed. It's so confusing when people use Americanisms. I thought you were complaining about people getting pissed.

But you learned something new didn’t you? So all good. Some people use Americanisms. No biggie. Not something to be pissed at.

And if @TheGrimSmile did think it was about people being pissed as in drunk… then that’s a concern!

Screamingabdabz · 05/04/2026 11:01

I think it’s unnecessary consumerism and insufferable social media bullshit that people are ‘pissing’ on. Not humble family get togethers.

so its okay provided you are humble about it?

Rainbowdottie · 05/04/2026 14:16

I don’t really think that anyone should care really what anyone else does. And I mean that on both sides of the fence. Whether you celebrate or not, whether you get together or not, whether you have big days or little days.

Im very very old. I’ve experienced every type of day on every type of Christmas, bank holiday etc etc. I’ve loved the days of big celebrations, I’ve loved the days of having family round etc, equally I’ve had days in my own with my husband where we’ve enjoyed time on our own, and I’ve experienced days even Christmas Day that have been quite quiet and lonely.

And that’s the thing, everyone has a different experience. Some people don’t have the money or family to celebrate, so it’s hard for them. Maybe they can’t relate. Some people grow up in houses where everything is a party and a celebration and they have a why wouldn’t you attitude.

really it’s better just to concentrate on your own bits

godmum56 · 05/04/2026 14:12

I adore my family and love getting together with them.

We are never ever “humble” though… whatever the hell that looks like!

Dragonflytamer · 05/04/2026 14:18

Chocolate Egg day is not a minor holiday! It is one of the best days of the year. Granted not as good as Santa Day but still up there.
