To think it’s easter not christmas?

What is going on with easter these days?
My social media is full of photos of piles of easter eggs, toys & clothes!
Mine got one each (well a tub of haribo for one as he doesn’t like easter eggs.)
AIBU to think people go over the top in some weird bid to show off?

Lots of people have the space. I hate to break it to you but some people have bigger houses than you and not everyone is skint.

I don’t do anything as my DS is 18 now and I think that’s too old but I don’t care what anyone else does

I have the space and the money. Still doesn’t mean I treat it like Xmas. Mine get a couple of choc eggs and that’s it. They don’t feel any less loved than their friends who get a pile, and I dont feel any less of a parent. My kids reaction is the same as this thread - it’s Easter not Xmas?🤷‍♀️

Why do you care? Its not costing you anything? My kids just got eggs and a teddy but if people want to get their kids other things, whats the harm? I bought my son a trampoline for the garden last week. We are off carbooting today and my son has money to spend there. People like to buy their kids things , its not exactly a crime

I can't speak for op but I care because:

  • Society is too consumerist already. The amount of tat that ends up in landfill in the name of treating the kids is already gross. We don't need another festival that involves buying stuff.
  • These trends create pressure for parents to keep up, feeling guilty because their children haven't got what X next door has. Like at Christmas where there are endless "Am i spending enough" posts. I can't help feeling we're a year or two away from those posts but Easter. It's easy to say ignore it and spend within your means but people get guilt tripped.
-I'm not particularly religious but of all the festivals to turn into an opportunity to buy buy buy! Easter seems the most tasteless, given the meaning behind it. I can't help feeling that society would be more respectful of other religions' festivals.

I did an easter box with an egg and some easter craft stuff to keep DD occupied during church service. She also got an outside toy but was getting that anyway for easter hols and with better weather (supposedly). I have a mini easter tree in window, wreath on door and a small string of egg lights (inside) as i love the colours and spring look of it all. Hardly all out decorations but it’s fun and cheers me up in the still winter like weather (we have had snow here yesterday). All my stuff i bought years ago and have re-used bar the egg n craft stuff and it’s only up a for a few days (good fri-mon). We are christian as well and go to church services so it’s not consumerist free for all. I’ve taken photos in the past when DC was a toddler cause it was all new and cute for me as a mother, but I haven’t posted a single thing this year as i’ve been too busy and can’t really be bothered.

I can only assume that none of the people doing all this stuff are suffering from the cost of living crisis.

The one who bought her kids bikes because they "needed" them? It's only just over 3 months since Christmas...

But bike are rubbish at Christmas, it's far to cold to be playing out, so by the time they actually use it much, it's no longer new and exciting.

Maybe some people prefer to spread treats throughout the year, instead of having an overwhelming amout in December? Doesn't necessarily mean they're spending any more

Saw a house decorated for Easter the other week. It was ridiculous. Another religious festival hijacked by capitalists and social media attention seekers, to the extent it’s lost any meaning (and I say that as an atheist).

Decorated how? It's been the norm in Germany at least to have an Easter tree outside (and one inside tbf) for at least as long as I can remember....so 40 years. Was always something my grandparents did as they lived there for many years and brought the tradition back. I always quite liked seeing the house filled with pastel colours and nordic patterns. Was a way of marking the seasons. Could be some foreign influence perhaps? Though sadly what I've seen in the shops lately has been more on the environmental nightmare tat side of things.

I'd love to be 'you do you' about the Easter gifts but really I feel like the world could do with fewer opportunities for commercialism. The amount of excess stuff on the planet is obscene enough already.

I used to get a new outfit at Easter when i was a kid, think it’s a Catholic thing?
And I’d get about 4 eggs. I never bought mine clothes as they got them when needed, and never toys.

I loved my new outfit at Easter. Didn't realise that it was a Catholic thing.

Moonstarsrain · 05/04/2026 08:53

My 6 year old DS asked where his Easter basket was this morning. Didn't know it was even a thing. They got an egg from me, 1 from my mum, 1 from my sister, 1 from my auntie and 1 from my neighbour. I have 3 kids. 2 of which are under 2. I already thought that was pretty extreme. They also got the asda brand hollow chocolate eggs for an Easter egg hunt in the house. It's turned into another social media competition. Which is a shame. I didn't actually get my younger 2 any Easter eggs and they've ended up with 4 each. One has a dairy allergy!

We have a neighbour who has an inflatable chick that pops out of an egg outside their front door. It comes up to half way up their door and is the very definition of landfill tat.

Wishingstaars · 05/04/2026 08:56

I always get my girls, Easter egg, sweeties, jammies, a book and a soft toy. I don't post on social media though..it's just what we do..each to their own x

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 05/04/2026 08:56

EasterEggCrazy · 05/04/2026 07:57

My younger ones have toys, books and eggs. Older ones have clothes, perfume and eggs. They all have money too. No photos on social media though, I don’t put photos of my children online.

What?! That's madness.

The one who bought her kids bikes because they "needed" them? It's only just over 3 months since Christmas...

But doesn't it make more sense to buy outdoor toys in spring? It's just using Easter to do it. Some people's Christmas involves visiting and staying with family. So why buy a child a toy that they can't use and might not be able to get, on Christmas Day, when Easter is three months away. That was always my reasoning. Good footballs (a casey) wasn't cheap. The lads would be out, in their new clothes on Easter Monday, with their football. My mun/nan would knit me and my friends yellow outfits for our dolls. That was in the 70s.

HortiGal · 05/04/2026 08:57

A new outfit is traditionally Catholic, mine all got an outfit and a book along with their egg.
But the stacks of toys is madness, do these kids even know the meaning of Easter??

Nottodaythankyou123 · 05/04/2026 08:58

trappedbynerves · 05/04/2026 08:00

I always got new clothes at Easter. My parents and grandparents always got me toys after one Easter, in the 70s, when I got 22 eggs from extended family.

I get my two a small egg, a couple of books and bubbles etc (dotted around the house as an Easter egg hunt) because otherwise the amount of chocolate is overwhelming!

EverybodyDoes · 05/04/2026 08:58

Not Catholic but we always got a new outfit to wear on Easter Sunday (and eggs.)

This was so that we were dressed up for Easter Sunday dinner, usually roast Spring lamb with all of the trimmings and Simnel cake or a mini egg decorated cheesecake.

I always also did a small egg hunt with my children, either in the garden or in the country park. Easter egg hunt was set by the Easter bunny, that my son is absolutely sure he saw!

ILoveDaffodills · 05/04/2026 08:58

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 05/04/2026 08:38

Mine got a fair amount of small eggs for a hunt, one large egg and two packets of stickers. Oh and some jelly beans 🐰

Colourful 'bunny poo'??

And this thread is the very definition of “holier than thou”.

SouthLondonMum22 · 05/04/2026 08:59

I use it as an excuse to get my December birthday DS some gifts that are made for better weather such as outdoor toys as well as the chocolate. We do baskets for things such as bubbles, outdoor chalk and swimming shorts which we would've bought anyway so just makes it a bit more fun.

CheeseLand2 · 05/04/2026 08:59

I’ll admit I’ve gone overboard on eggs before but never toys!

This year my 11 yr old got one egg from us, an egg from his nan and thats plenty. It’s a rip off anyway paying about £6 for a tiny egg and packaging 🙄

Doyouknowdanieltiger · 05/04/2026 09:01

Im sort of in the middle.

I don't get my children one egg each. They have 2 eggs each and a little bag of treats (small £ toys, a book)

I also don't post on social media, who wants to see a pile of eggs?

Leapintothelightning · 05/04/2026 09:01

It’s so weird! We’re going to paint hard boiled eggs and roll them because that’s what I did as a child. They have been given Easter eggs from a few people and MIL got them a couple of wee inexpensive gifts (not too impressed with that but picking my battles…)

Yes, my mam hated paying for eggs so we would get to choose a small toy, often colouring pencils or felt tips.

That sounds fun.

It’s not in a landfill though- presumably they get it out every Easter.

I hate to break it to you but your own Christmas decs will be in a landfill one day.

TheCurious0range · 05/04/2026 09:03

DS has a small egg and a small thorntons chocolate rabbit, there are also some mini eggs etc for a hunt but those will be out in a bowl to share once found, he's out at gymnastics at the moment so will do it when he's back, my parents are coming over for a roast. I don't buy new clothes for Easter but I have just had to buy him new clothes as he's grown out of the old ones and the weather is changing, he will wear a new jumper for church today but it's just in his wardrobe not being given as a gift.

I did get some pale daffs, yellow roses and lilac tulips in Tesco Thursday in the yellow sticker bit, all came to less than £4 and have made a lovely spring bouquet for the table! That's the full extent of my decorating.....

WaltzingWaters · 05/04/2026 09:03

I think it’s a very American thing to do Easter baskets with gifts as well as Easter eggs.
Here I’ve done an Easter egg hunt for my 4yo and we’ve done Easter crafting. That’s it. I did consider getting a cute little Easter chick outfit for my 4mo, but decided there was no point when she’d only wear it for a day or two!

BlackCat14 · 05/04/2026 09:03

I’ve got a couple of Easter candles, an Easter wreath on my front door and I picked up some twigs with pastel coloured eggs on from a garden centre, and they’re in a vase on the kitchen island. No pictures of any of these in Instagram though, they’re here for my enjoyment 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have noticed over the last few years some friends posting pictures of loads of eggs for their kids. Like ten different eggs each, as well as presents, and I’ve always found that excessive, but it’s just because it’s not what I’m used to. When I was young I got three eggs, one from parents, one from each set of grandparents.
