To think it’s easter not christmas?

What is going on with easter these days?
My social media is full of photos of piles of easter eggs, toys & clothes!
Mine got one each (well a tub of haribo for one as he doesn’t like easter eggs.)
AIBU to think people go over the top in some weird bid to show off?

Just turned into another capitalist fest and ruined the tradition tbh! Same as boo boxes at Halloween - what on Earth is the need??

PersephoneParlormaid · 05/04/2026 07:52

I used to get a new outfit at Easter when i was a kid, think it’s a Catholic thing?
And I’d get about 4 eggs. I never bought mine clothes as they got them when needed, and never toys.

Yes it’s a catholic thing but many if not all of these people aren’t catholic on my feed. It’s nuts.
It’s like the second Christmas & don’t get me started on boo boxes, when did we come so obessed with showing off for social media? I get kids deserved to be spoiled at times, but it’s making a rod for your own back isn’t it?

Yanbu. It's ridiculous.

Ineedanewsofa · 05/04/2026 07:56

I’m in my 40s and I remember a friend at school used to get a new outfit for Easter, apparently her mum used to get given her new ‘Sunday Best’ for Easter when she was a child to wear to Church on Easter Sunday and that’s where the tradition came from. I was always super jealous as she basically got £100 to spend in Topshop!

JontyGentooey · 05/04/2026 07:56

I'd love to see how many parents still bothered with this shite if social media vanished overnight.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/04/2026 07:56

There's nothing wrong with making things fun for kids or giving some gifts. I think you just do what you like. 🤷‍♀️

carnivalqueenthethird · 05/04/2026 07:57

I literally just had this conversation with my husband. My 5 year old has got it in his head he is getting presents today. I’ve had to tell him so many times over the last week that Easter is not like Christmas. Every morning he’s been coming in our bedroom and shouting ‘only x amount of sleeps until Easter’. He started school in September and was never bothered about Easter before then. It’s definitely something he has picked up from school as he asked if he was getting an Easter basket before he broke up.

I have set up a Easter egg hunt for him round the house and I’m trying to put it off as long as possible as I know there’s going to be some kind of upset because he hasn’t got any actual ‘presents’, like he is expecting.

EasterEggCrazy · 05/04/2026 07:57

My younger ones have toys, books and eggs. Older ones have clothes, perfume and eggs. They all have money too. No photos on social media though, I don’t put photos of my children online.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 05/04/2026 07:57

We did too, although not Catholic or even particularly religious. I do think it's a Christian tradition and also it obviously works well with kids who've probably outgrown their summer clothes so it's time for a new set.

Contraversialcatergory · 05/04/2026 07:58

I agree it’s all got worse and my kids can’t have choc for various medical reasons so I hate it

Youzername · 05/04/2026 07:58

Saw a house decorated for Easter the other week. It was ridiculous. Another religious festival hijacked by capitalists and social media attention seekers, to the extent it’s lost any meaning (and I say that as an atheist).

Listlostlast · 05/04/2026 07:58

I just said on another thread my kids have had just an egg each, but reading this, I’ve been reminded I do buy them a new outfit at Easter, hearing it is a catholic thing makes so much sense. My GMa is catholic and she used to buy us outfits at Easter too so my brains made it A Thing even though I’m not catholic 😂

As for the ott presents, yes to me it seems daft but live and let live I guess!

I always got new clothes at Easter. My parents and grandparents always got me toys after one Easter, in the 70s, when I got 22 eggs from extended family.

Helpforsummer · 05/04/2026 08:00

I've done a little Easter egg hunt for my kids and some Easter baskets with an egg, some hotwheels cars (very religious) and some crafts in (for while I make dinner) - I love how excited they're going to be to see them and see their family later.
None of it will be on social media but Id say my set up is exactly what you hate. I've probably spent a tenner each and their excited faces are worth every penny 😂

Likewise. It definitely seems to be done just for the Instagram worthy photos.

No one is saying don't have fun but let's not pretend these parents are doing it for the children when they are evidently doing it for the pictures to show what a brilliant life they apparently have.

If it were for the children I'm sure they would prefer mum and dad to be taking part in the egg hunt or eating chocolate with them for breakfast than shoving the camera in the faces for the 'perfect' shot.

buymeaboaanddrivemetoreno · 05/04/2026 08:01

I’m in my 40s and we always got some sort of easter basket, wee things -pencils, socks, bath stuff, maybe a book. We do similar for our kid, bought a few wee bits and bobs.

Almondsundae · 05/04/2026 08:02

My dc get 2 eggs each one big one small. When they were little I’d do an egg hunt with the little eggs but they usually left so many that we stopped !

Besidemyselfwithworry · 05/04/2026 08:02

Mine has got an egg trail with little eggs and a big egg at the end
then a small gift bag with some little bits in sweets, new socks etc colouring books, an Easter chick bath bomb.
my mum used to get a new summer dress for Easter and when we were little she did the same for me and my sister but sis and I don’t tend to do it now we buy clothes when they need them unless we go away at Easter and get something new to take.
i know someone who has bought new bikes!!’ But she said they needed them but even so it’s a lot isn’t it?

Do people do what they like?

I think a lot of people just do what they think other people do and what they are pressured into doing by the retail industry.

Personally I don't think conditioning children into thinking " fun" equals being showered with gifts is doing them any favours or makes them grow into decent people with decent values.

CatamaranViper · 05/04/2026 08:04

I'm mid 30s and always got a present at Easter plus clothes (for church) and an egg. My DS gets a present too but mainly it's an outdoors thing as his birthday is December and it feels mean to give a kid a slide in December.
This year he got a new goal for the garden

IceIceBabyBump · 05/04/2026 08:04

YABU

Fuck that.

Christmas is the best time of year so why not do it twice?

Sitting here in my Easter grotto, wearing an Easter jumper, drinking bucks fizz, ready to open presents 😍😍😍😍😍

I actually prefer Easter to Christmas because its all the good stuff (presents, foo, wine, time off) but even better (light nights, better weather) and without bullshit expectations that swirl around and ruin Christmas (endless work/group drinks, family visits).

I absolutely fucking love Easter

Edited to add: I'm atheist, I don't have any children and I'm not on any social media 🤣 It's just me and DP and we've "done" Easter like this for about 15 years before it was trendy

CaffeineAndChords · 05/04/2026 08:05

Omg I thought the same I can’t believe the stuff I’m seeing 😆

romdowa · 05/04/2026 08:07

Why do you care? Its not costing you anything? My kids just got eggs and a teddy but if people want to get their kids other things, whats the harm? I bought my son a trampoline for the garden last week. We are off carbooting today and my son has money to spend there. People like to buy their kids things , its not exactly a crime

ThatJadeLion · 05/04/2026 08:07

I'm torn. I don't do social media but I have gone a little over the top this Easter. But my daughter is only four and she loves decorations etc. it's been a long winter, so it's been nice to decorate part of my house, party food and some guests, some toys and gifts and the traditional easter egg hunt. None of it has been uploaded to social media and I only took a couple of pictures, so I've not done it for that reason.
