To think it’s easter not christmas?

What is going on with easter these days?
My social media is full of photos of piles of easter eggs, toys & clothes!
Mine got one each (well a tub of haribo for one as he doesn’t like easter eggs.)
AIBU to think people go over the top in some weird bid to show off?

My younger ones have toys, books and eggs. Older ones have clothes, perfume and eggs. They all have money too. No photos on social media though, I don’t put photos of my children online.

Me too. I’ve bought them 3 eggs, a book each, tshirt, cuddly toy, some pens and a few other Easter bits but I wouldn’t dream of putting it on social media.

YABU

Fuck that.

Christmas is the best time of year so why not do it twice?

Sitting here in my Easter grotto, wearing an Easter jumper, drinking bucks fizz, ready to open presents 😍😍😍😍😍

I actually prefer Easter to Christmas because its all the good stuff (presents, foo, wine, time off) but even better (light nights, better weather) and without bullshit expectations that swirl around and ruin Christmas (endless work/group drinks, family visits).

I absolutely fucking love Easter

Edited to add: I'm atheist, I don't have any children and I'm not on any social media 🤣 It's just me and DP and we've "done" Easter like this for about 15 years before it was trendy

Edited

Love this!!

Finaldrop · 05/04/2026 08:10

I’ve just a photo appear on my feed with a sofa filled with toys, eggs and clothing. It looked like a typical Christmas morning!

GingerBeverage · 05/04/2026 08:10

It’s just the algorithm generating profit.

Advent calendars used to be cardboard.
Valentines used to be a card.
Halloween used to be a turnip.

Everything moves to the extreme, which coincides with cost.

Bumblebeeforever · 05/04/2026 08:11

Mine are getting an Easter egg and we’ve hidden some small chocolates around the house for them to ‘hunt’, I have heard of new clothes at Easter but it’s not something we do, they just get new clothes when they need them.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 05/04/2026 08:13

It's too soon after Christmas for piles of gifts, in my mind. Why not adopt the Summer Solstice as the new 'gifting season', then it's half way through the year and parents can spread the cost?

(Rather tongue in cheek because it was always about the chocolate when I and my kids were all growing up and the whole 'gift' thing never featured).

youalright · 05/04/2026 08:13

Mine just get one large egg each and some small eggs from the egg hunt. Same as when I was a kid

I've done a little Easter egg hunt for my kids and some Easter baskets with an egg, some hotwheels cars (very religious) and some crafts in (for while I make dinner) - I love how excited they're going to be to see them and see their family later.
None of it will be on social media but Id say my set up is exactly what you hate. I've probably spent a tenner each and their excited faces are worth every penny 😂

No that’s fine! Crafts and a hot wheels car (those be worth some money in the far future!) aren’t the issue it’s like £50-100 each on toys.
I wish I could take a screenshot but it would out me. 😂

Honestly it’s just more competitive social media bollocks !
im always amazed at how easily influenced people are

Sirzy · 05/04/2026 08:13

If that’s what makes people happy though does it matter?

ds has never liked chocolate so when he was little it was always new clothes people got him which was very handy going into spring!

he is 16 now and not fussed by it so I haven’t got him anything this year.

Marmite27 · 05/04/2026 08:15

Mine got a couple of eggs, a couple of books and a cross stitch kit.

we bought the books and kit as egg equivalents as they get loads of chocolate because they’re part of a large family.

oh and they got a packet of Creme egg Oreo’s and a new hairbrush each.

Yes this is what I mean!
A few crafts is lovely but christmas piles I mean really? 😩 Who has the space for all this stuff? It’s way over the top.

Yeah, it has become a commercial thing and exclusively to post on socials too, the boxes are practically designed for it! Someone wants to sell them so parents buy them, part if it is keeping up with Jones' mentally too and tbf, the kids will love it so it's lovely for them, but yes at its heart it's a commercial endeavour.

If there was no social media to splash pics on I doubt as many would be purchased tbh.

I kind easter boxes less than Christmas eve boxes tbh, they've got so big it almost dilutes thenwow factor of Xmas morning!

Have you always done this?

Firefliesdancing · 05/04/2026 08:20

YANBU my children have been asked several times by their friends at school before we broke up for the hols what are they getting for Easter?

Most of their friends have wish lists with very expensive items Apple Watches, Mac, IPads, expensive games. Luckily they're not bothered they love Easter egg hunting in the garden, making Easter shredded wheat chocolate nests, then sneaking a few, big dinner then eating their chocolate eggs for a pud. Nothing fancy just a fun family day.

We’ve decided to have a few of our children’s friends and their parents over to join in on the hunt for a bit of fun but nothing fancy/expensive being bought a simple buffet and a cake being made by one of the Grandma’s.

I do remember being bought a dress and new shoes once when I was little to attend Mass with my Grandma but my own family are not overly religious.

But then people moan about not having money. It’s such a waste and so unnecessary.

But it’s their money to waste as they see fit surely?

I think it’s daft and often is just for show but if it makes them happy then that’s their choice.

Well, in a way Easter IS ‘my’ Christmas because for various reasons, I never get to host or be in my own home at Christmas time. So, Easter I have claimed as mine to invite my family over and do things my way. My son and I did lots of crafts and decorated, he has a jolly Easter bonnet he’s been pleased to wear, we baked little Easter cakes, and yesterday his cousin came over for an egg hunt outside followed by a buffet and some party games. Today we are going for a children’s Easter event at a local church and then I’ll do a big lamb roast, hopefully followed by a trip to the local pub.

He does get a new egg cup for his ‘traditional’ dippy egg and soldier Easter breakfast. They used to include those in certain Easter eggs when I was little, but you can’t get them these days.

Aside from bunny ears to wear there were no new clothes or toys, although he did get a new colouring book and pens, and a load of chocolate eggs- most of these will be melted down to make cornflakes cakes in a week or so.

The above isn’t for social media at all- it’s just me carving out my own little family tradition as Christmas is off the table currently. I never really did anything particular for Easter when I was a child- I remember my mum would always wait until Easter Monday to get as an egg as they were half price!

paulhollywoodshairgel · 05/04/2026 08:24

we got a new outfit for church and a couple of eggs! I was in Sainsburys and saw there were Easter pyjamas and toys and all sorts. Just a ploy to make you spend money.

Sartre · 05/04/2026 08:24

I agree. I’m not really overly invested in Easter. It’s great because it’s so much cheaper than Christmas! I get them a big and small egg each.

Itsmetheflamingo · 05/04/2026 08:25

lol. Every year for at least the last decade, feigning wide eyed confusion “when did this happen?”

When we all know it’s an excuse to slag off other families and feel superior for some bizarre puritan coded low self confidence.

let the people spend their money however they want. We live in a capitalist society, the consumers aren’t your enemy.

Onefortheroad25 · 05/04/2026 08:25

I buy mine eggs. Otherwise it’s a normal Sunday. Ds12 has a match this morning an hour away. That what we are doing. I’m not on social media so I don’t see what others are at but I can imagine! All for show.

Dollymylove · 05/04/2026 08:25

My siblings and I used to get one Easter egg. That was back in the days when an Easter egg was pretty substantial, the chocolate was much thicker and you really had to bash it ti break it. Also full of sweets inside.
So it was much more of a treat than today's insipid offerings which get smaller every year

ExitPursuedByABare · 05/04/2026 08:26

We always got new outfits at Whit.

I used to do an egg hunt for DD when she was little. Then a couple of years ago I did an Easter basket for her with small gifts like make up and wipes and a few eggs. She’s 26 and has had a rough couple of years so this tradition has carried on. Although she no longer has chocolate 🙄. This year it is books, an on the move coffee mug, hair bobbles, egg shaped candles and I can’t remember what else. Gives me pleasure creating it and her pleasure receiving it.

PurBal · 05/04/2026 08:27

We always used to get an Easter gift and an egg as a child. Been disorganised this year.
