To think it’s easter not christmas?

What is going on with easter these days?
My social media is full of photos of piles of easter eggs, toys & clothes!
Mine got one each (well a tub of haribo for one as he doesn’t like easter eggs.)
AIBU to think people go over the top in some weird bid to show off?

It's okay though, they will next go on about how hard life is, how they can't afford quality food because of inflation and they really really really don't buy any luxuries ever!

Sprogonthetyne · 05/04/2026 08:28

Mine get a small toy, this year DS got a smashers egg and DD got a surprise Teddy in an egg. However, they have about half as much chocolate as I got as a child, so I don't think they're nessecerily more spoilt, I'm just more mindful of sugar intake.

We also decorated the house, and make a nest (giant cornflake cake). Our decoration collection cost about £10, years ago and will be packed away and come out again next year. This isn't anything new, i did the same as a child. Putting up the decorations and baking is just a fun thing to do with young DC, and fills up some time at the beginning of the holidays.

Non of that is for social media, I didn't even take photos, it's just fun to do fun things.

Bobbybobbins · 05/04/2026 08:29

WTH is a boo box? I agree that Easter eggs are surely sufficient.

DappledThings · 05/04/2026 08:31

Have never bought or been bought an Easter present. Just an egg.

Fortunately also not seen any of this nonsense from my friends on Facebook or heard anyone mention it.

Thatpastalife · 05/04/2026 08:31

Mine have got an Easter basket, which is an Easter egg (small) and a little pack of small eggs with a rabbit from Aldi, and we’ll do an Easter egg hunt.
They were so excited for the Easter Bunny to come and their excited voices this morning were worth the £10 spent, it’s also not going on social media, it’s purely part of the magic of their childhood for me. We also left out some lettuce, a carrot and a glass of water for the Easter Bunny.
I do not go in for Xmas Eve boxes nevermind Boo Boxes what alot of nonsense, but we DO try to make everything as magical as possible for them, they get one childhood, and I get one motherhood, and I take this shit seriously 😂.

Fedupoftheshits · 05/04/2026 08:32

I agree OP, thinks it’s nuts to be honest, but each to their own I suppose! The kids get an egg that they choose and we do a little egg hunt at home and thats enough for us.

Yeah, because obviously only poor people buy Easter gifts 🙄

CeeJay81 · 05/04/2026 08:34

Just eggs here now. When they were little, they got a couple of small things and a egg hunt. Their Birthdays are April and May. So i'm not giving them expensive gifts or money. They have that for their Birthday.

If that’s what makes people happy though does it matter?

ds has never liked chocolate so when he was little it was always new clothes people got him which was very handy going into spring!

he is 16 now and not fussed by it so I haven’t got him anything this year.

Does it make people happy or is it more about keeping up with the Joneses, whether it’s on instagram or IRL?
It only takes a couple of kids in the class to say they’re getting presents etc and every child then expects - parents speak to other parents & the shops stock more and more shite!!
I get the eggs/maybe a little basket of pens/bath bomb etc but big presents and Xmas-style consumerism is bonkers (abs Xmas is now ridiculous imho!).

Oh yeah we decorate too. I’ve had the decorations for years, some are homemade. Have a lovely spring wreath on the door and some eggs hanging from a tree in the front garden then some fireplace decorations. Also enjoy a Sunday roast and making nest buns. We usually go on an egg hunt at a NT property but our car is typically out of action this weekend so can’t this year. We’re getting the train to see Mario at the cinema!

Nosejobnelly · 05/04/2026 08:35

And wtf is a Boo box for Halloween - no-one can say that isn’t from social media!!

SquigglePigs · 05/04/2026 08:37

DD doesn't get lots of presents but she is getting some books off us and her Grandparents along with some chocolate. We have several people who very generously buy her Easter eggs so she gets tonnes of chocolate. One person did get her a paint your own Easter bunny, which is cute and also not-chocolate so that's cool. This way she gets a book and a small chocolate rather than even more chocolate.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 05/04/2026 08:38

Mine got a fair amount of small eggs for a hunt, one large egg and two packets of stickers. Oh and some jelly beans 🐰

Oh we do days out but that’s just normal for the school hols! i was frugal and tracked down discount codes though 🤣 purposely getting the bus for 25% off the science museum as kids ride free. I wouldn’t count them towards easter “presents”.

Are people really this weak willed and lacking in confidence though? Is it normal for adult people to be so influenced by instagram (I can’t say I have any Easter presents in my insta feed, but maybe people do) do adult people really give a crap what other people get their kids?

maybe we has a crisis of self confidence if so. Or maybe people just enjoy celebrating as a family more than they used to

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 05/04/2026 08:39

Religious upbringing here but not Catholic. I always had something new for church on Easter Sunday. It's a habit that dies hard and I have to talk myself out of buying something new for Easter! When my children were younger they would have a present each for Easter but only the smallest, cheapest eggs.

Sprogonthetyne · 05/04/2026 08:39

Bobbybobbins · 05/04/2026 08:29

Its a Halloween thing. Some people, usually those who don't let their kids go trick or treating, will give their kids a box with sweets/treats at home instead.

I don't do it, but honestly can't get worked up over it, any more then I can get worked up over kids getting a change of cloths or some craft stuff in with their chocolate eggs.

scalt · 05/04/2026 08:40

There have been so many mumsnet bingo threads lately.

Easter is too big now.
Shops should be closed on Good Friday, like they were back in the day.
Easter has lost its meaning - it was a pagan festival, until the Christians nicked it; and it’s even lost that meaning now.
Tick tick tick, bingo!

CaffeinatedMum · 05/04/2026 08:40

Mine got an egg each, an Easter egg trail, and then some crafty bits and Easter bubbles / bath bomb. Will all get used, didn’t cost much, and didn’t take a photo for social media although I did arrange it very artfully if I do say so myself. Let people do what they want wit their own kids, they’re not affecting you.

Notmyreality · 05/04/2026 08:41

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/04/2026 07:56

There's nothing wrong with making things fun for kids or giving some gifts. I think you just do what you like. 🤷‍♀️

How naive are you?

UniquePinkSwan · 05/04/2026 08:42

backagainohdear · 05/04/2026 08:15

Yes this is what I mean!
A few crafts is lovely but christmas piles I mean really? 😩 Who has the space for all this stuff? It’s way over the top.

Lots of people have the space. I hate to break it to you but some people have bigger houses than you and not everyone is skint.

I don’t do anything as my DS is 18 now and I think that’s too old but I don’t care what anyone else does

Ponoka7 · 05/04/2026 08:43

@Besidemyselfwithworry it makes more sense to buy bikes at Easter.
Back in 1990, my then toddler played out on her new trike, with a road full of other children, all playing with their outdoor Easter toys/bikes/scooters etc.
I always did Easter as a mini Christmas. My GM and DH was Catholic, it's as big of a deal, as Christmas. At Christmas we had to share the festival, Easter could be just for us. I know of people who used to put up marquees in the garden and have elaborate food, before the days of BBQs and long before the Internet. My children wasn't the only ones getting new presents in the 90/2000s. Everyone I knew got clothes, since my GM's childhood (born 1910). My DD has just moved house, we've been flat out busy, so I haven't decorated my/her's/my other DDs house and windows and I've missed it.

VickyEadieofThigh · 05/04/2026 08:45

I can only assume that none of the people doing all this stuff are suffering from the cost of living crisis.

The one who bought her kids bikes because they "needed" them? It's only just over 3 months since Christmas...

Loub1987 · 05/04/2026 08:46

I always got new clothes for Easter and also a toy actually as I’m diabetic. Then because I got a toy so did my siblings. I don’t really think it matters what other families do.

Passaggressfedup · 05/04/2026 08:47

Yeah, because obviously only poor people buy Easter gifts
It's not just poor people who seem to come on MN or post on SM how hard they have it financially.

My colleague goes on and on about it, always seeking sympathy. She showed us pictures of the eggs and tat she bought... It must have been close to £100 worth.
