To think it’s easter not christmas?

What is going on with easter these days?
My social media is full of photos of piles of easter eggs, toys & clothes!
Mine got one each (well a tub of haribo for one as he doesn’t like easter eggs.)
AIBU to think people go over the top in some weird bid to show off?

Half and half here. We’ve always done small presents for Easter since the kids were tiny, mostly to avoid focusing it too much on chocolate especially when they were really young. I do an Easter egg hunt with a few chocolate eggs and some foam eggs / little chicks to give them plenty to look for without overloading them on chocolate, then at the end they find an Easter bag for each of them, usually a small egg or chocolate bunny, a book and a small cuddly toy. I do love leaning into any excuse for a bit of fun and don’t feel it’s too over the top, just replacing some chocolate with a little gift. We don’t have a religious aspect to our day so it’s fun to have some traditions. I don’t usually post anything on social media but do enjoy taking photos for family. I quite like the fun of it!

Brownbear88 · 05/04/2026 15:10

We gave my youngest a cuddly toy, and bought new outfit and bibs, and a couple of books. All themed around bunnies. Easter cardigan, and some stickers a puzzle and game for my middle child. New tracksuit, game to play later as a family for my eldest and some bunny ears for them all to wear.

Easter bunny bought an egg and a little tin of chocolates for each and hid little eggs over the house and garden.

I like to spoil my kids but they are only little once and I sure as heck don’t do it for social media (which I don’t do at all), I don’t judge others for buying more or less for their kids and I don’t buy tat that will end up in landfill, I get stuff they will use throughout the year so I don’t see anything wrong with it 🤷‍♀️ I don’t do boo boxes for Halloween etc. it if people want to what’s the harm?

It’s INSANE. We bought our 4 kids one egg each

Did other people buy your dcs eggs?

we bought our dcs one egg each too- but then so did grandparents and uncles. Some years if we’d seen godparents before Easter, they’d get an eggs from them too, but this year as our kids only broken up on Thursday, we’re seeing godparents afterwards in the holidays, so many years they get 6/7 eggs each.

Ive always just assumed the big pile of eggs is a sign of a big family.

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 05/04/2026 15:30

All I see on FB these days is unsolicited adverts, AI slop and posts from groups that I’ve joined. Not a single Easter-themed post by anyone known to me.

The toys and clothes thing is new to me if that’s what’s happening now. But the masses of chocolate has long been a thing. Kids with large extended families tend to get a chocolate egg from each relative. I remember being surprised at this about 10 years ago.

Overflowingwithcosmos · 05/04/2026 13:49

I’m not sure it’s new. I used to get dozens of Easter eggs when I was a child. We’d make ourselves sick! No SM though. Interesting everyone mentioning the Catholic element. Mine is a big Irish Catholic family and the day was such a weird mix of dressing up for church and stuffing our faces with chocolate…and our Catholic school made a big deal out of Easter in the run up to- again with a mix of religion and excess fake rabbits/chicks/chocolate.

I suppose an element of it, is people who have given up chocolateor nice things for Lent, finally letting loose and feasting.

Ironfloor269 · 05/04/2026 15:35

The fuck is a boo box??

Drivingmissrangey · 05/04/2026 15:37

Dontlletmedownbruce · 05/04/2026 14:36

@Drivingmissrangey what's an Easter tree? It is just like a Christmas one but with eggs and chicks or is it a religious thing?

It’s a tiny tree that has some rabbits and chicks on it. DD loves making things so she has made most of the decorations.

Wtafdidido · 05/04/2026 15:59

Why does it bother you what other people do to celebrate? Each to their own. Celebrate as much or as little as you want or can afford. It’s personal choice. We do what we do and do t care what anyone else is doing.

Bloozie · 05/04/2026 16:15

Calliopespa · 05/04/2026 13:14

I think the cross is to represent the cross Christ died on isn't it? I agree Spring was a pagan celebration but I think the Hot Cross Buns are firmly a Christian tradition aren't they?

No, they’re pagan. The quarters represent the four seasons and phases of the moon. Pre-Christian bread was often scored like this to facilitate breaking and sharing.

Dragonflytamer · 05/04/2026 12:07

At least the garden centers are open! god only hates his followers going to supermarkets he's ok with plants.

Laughed out loud at this. Jesus is firmly against anyone spending money on affordable bread, milk or cheese today but is fine with bedding plants, tastefully patterned scarves and a slice of something hellishly over-priced from the tearoom. Farm shops are open and selling £48 steak; Farmfoods is closed. Thank goodness consumerism hasn’t taken over THIS holy day.

TheGoldenOwl · 05/04/2026 16:22

I prefer Easter to Christmas tbh

If they want to, then that’s great for them. But I wonder how many don’t actually want to but still tie themselves in knots and do it. Not helped by social media.

To be fair Jesus thought that 5 loaves and 2 fishes was adequate to feed 5,000. He would probably have been protesting the sheer gluttony of what people can buy in a supermarket these days.

lol. Every year for at least the last decade, feigning wide eyed confusion “when did this happen?”

When we all know it’s an excuse to slag off other families and feel superior for some bizarre puritan coded low self confidence.

let the people spend their money however they want. We live in a capitalist society, the consumers aren’t your enemy.

Oh yes. It always is. Christmas, birthdays , Easter, Halloween, the wide-eyed assemble to compare their surprise and blame it on social media.
I actually didn't get any further than this response, but it doesn't take much imagination to imagine the way the thread will go.
On the basis of how far I got, the cross-stitch kit and hairbrush buyer wins the best parent award so far.

Abitofalark · 05/04/2026 17:40

Someone asked: What's a boo box? Someone answered:Like a Christmas Eve box. I fear to ask further in case I come across like Dear Henry in the hole in the bucket song.

Sonato · 05/04/2026 17:44

Ill tell you what the need is.

The world is a horrible place. As a nation we havent been truly happy in over a decade. Everyone is constantly at each others throats.

If that means finding moments of hapiness where you can, especially with little ones, through boo boxes or easter eggs or decorating the house then fucking do it. Go for it.

The world is full of absolute curmudgeons

One of my grandsons hate chocolate so we buy him foam bunnies etc

Ironically I found a post really bleak that was just a couch full of stuff. There wasn’t even anything Easter related amongst the stuff.
The happy posts are the ones where children are beaming with their Easter eggs or eating their mini egg waffles for breakfast. But that post of the pile of stuff was a bit sad and grey. not exactly joyful.

Why?
if you ‘celebrate’ Easter then I assume youre Christian & go to church today?

Why not? 🐰

Coconutter24 · 05/04/2026 18:07

backagainohdear · 05/04/2026 08:15

Yes this is what I mean!
A few crafts is lovely but christmas piles I mean really? 😩 Who has the space for all this stuff? It’s way over the top.

Why is acceptable to have a Christmas pile but not an Easter pile?

Why wouldn't you assume that? Easter is THE most important event in the Christian Calendar. People do 'celebrate' at Easter for other reasons, as evidenced by this thread, but Easter is a religious festival in origin?

I wouldn’t assume that because religion and beliefs are not only celebrated in a church

It's just another reason for common people to post pictures of how much money they have spent on their spoilt kids. It's as bad as the Facebook pics of stacks of birthday/Christmas presents etc.

exactly it's a horrible obsession assuming everyone is interested in your mundane life
