What is going on with easter these days?
My social media is full of photos of piles of easter eggs, toys & clothes!
Mine got one each (well a tub of haribo for one as he doesn’t like easter eggs.)
AIBU to think people go over the top in some weird bid to show off?

I literally said the same upthread 😂
Apparently it's like a Christmas Eve box - but instead of Christmassy things like pyjamas and reindeer food or whatever the heck you put in them, a boo box has Halloween stuff.
So presumably skeleton heads, fake blood, jelly worms Confused 😁

Haha, wow. Okay 😂😂 I only read so far upthread, so missed your question 😆. My 14 year old son just started laughing at the concept of a boo box when I asked him if he'd heard of one, stating it's all for show Mum 😂😂 Not daft my boy 😁

Life is relentlessly grim. If people want to celebrate and exchange gifts, any excuse, I say.

The pagan festival of Easter would see people decorate their homes with flowers and candles, exchange candles as gifts, paint eggs, make spiced hot cross buns and gather for dancing and feasts. Sounds like the basis for a mini Christmas to me.

That said, I don’t. We do have more than one egg each though. The gluttony!

Edited

I think the cross is to represent the cross Christ died on isn't it? I agree Spring was a pagan celebration but I think the Hot Cross Buns are firmly a Christian tradition aren't they?

You do realise Easter is a more important festival than Christmas.

Interestingly, this is more obvious if you spend a lot of time in Europe, where you definitely sense (for me it was Italy and France) that Easter is more sacred.

begonefoulclutter · 05/04/2026 13:19

It's not the religious festival that's the issue here. It's the social media show-offs.

Haven't rtft but in case it hasn't already been mentioned yet... Easter is more important to Christians than Christmas.

True, it’s not a crime, but some people do care about the effects of out of control capitalism on every day life. The pressures of Christmas on people’s budgets, not to mention their mental health with the pressure to provide for children and ‘keep up’ are already well documented. Then there’s the environment. Sure, a lot of people don’t care, but for those that do, it is just observing that Easter is in danger of going the same way.

I agree with this. And all the cries of the cost of living while shops put out all these things in shops and people tie themselves in knots financially and mentally.

And for anyone reading this who happily goes all out without it causing you any stress, then good for you. You crack on (no pun intended). But the toxicity can’t be ignored and still needs talking about.

Tattletail · 05/04/2026 13:22

I can see the Easter outfit stemming from days when more people went to church.

I also think the odd gift at Easter is probably not that uncommon. We would sometimes get an Easter gift, often to share. My favourite being the Bambi VHS 😆

Allseeingallknowing · 05/04/2026 13:24

Many years ago, in the fifties, I remember Woolworths had a giant chocolate egg in their shop window. You had to guess the weight. The winner got a prize, and the egg went to the children’s ward at the local hospital. The primary school had an Easter hat competition. The thing that was that all the Easter stuff didn’t appear in the shops until much later.

sunshinestar1986 · 05/04/2026 13:31

I went to a church school for primary and we got dyed boiled eggs from the staff 🤣
I thought they were fantastic
Now it's all chocolate eggs

Flamingofeathers · 05/04/2026 13:39

Disappointed I’ve not had anything on any of my pages, I love seeing stuff like that, how did you get it?

Dragonflytamer · 05/04/2026 13:44

Somedreamer · 05/04/2026 12:57

Yes, if you are Christian and go to Church.

The consumerist nonsense has nothing whatever to do with Jesus though, so it doesn’t follow that Easter should = more gifts.

Easter has been commercialised from the early days when some entreprenurial Romans decided to sell souvenir crucifixes,

Toosoonforahotcrossbun · 05/04/2026 13:44

It’s ridiculous. I saw a post and a women had lots and lots of gift on the couch like it was Xmas morning!!

I buy eggs and Easter themed sweets although the last couple of years I’ve bought my teens/tweens a candle and reed diffuser too from home
bargains.

Overflowingwithcosmos · 05/04/2026 13:49

I’m not sure it’s new. I used to get dozens of Easter eggs when I was a child. We’d make ourselves sick! No SM though. Interesting everyone mentioning the Catholic element. Mine is a big Irish Catholic family and the day was such a weird mix of dressing up for church and stuffing our faces with chocolate…and our Catholic school made a big deal out of Easter in the run up to- again with a mix of religion and excess fake rabbits/chicks/chocolate.

iamnotalemon · 05/04/2026 14:08

Yeah of course people go over the top and I’m sure it’s the same people who moan about the cost of living crisis and have no money.

Isittimeformynapyet · 05/04/2026 14:09

Almondsundae · 05/04/2026 08:02

My dc get 2 eggs each one big one small. When they were little I’d do an egg hunt with the little eggs but they usually left so many that we stopped !

I loved the little Easter egg hunt. My parents knew exactly how many they'd hidden so told us when it was time to stop.

PersephoneParlormaid · 05/04/2026 07:52

I used to get a new outfit at Easter when i was a kid, think it’s a Catholic thing?
And I’d get about 4 eggs. I never bought mine clothes as they got them when needed, and never toys.

We got new clothes at Christmas and Easter too, possibly Catholic, but I think it's also just a very innate tradition that kids need bigger clothes, and when we mark the season is a good time to give them!

The Icelandic Yule Cat eats children that haven't been given new clothes.

Easter trees are traditional though, I will die on that hill.

Drivingmissrangey · 05/04/2026 14:18

We do an egg hunt around the house, way too much chocolate but it will be eaten over months so I really don’t care. I usually get the kids a few new t shirts around now but nothing they don’t need.

I can assure you not a single photo will be posted on social media. Not even of my little Easter tree. So hopefully no one will be offended.

Twinkletoesandspaghettios · 05/04/2026 14:20

It’s INSANE. We bought our 4 kids one egg each

Dontlletmedownbruce · 05/04/2026 14:32

I usually got new clothes too but mostly because it was time to buy new clothes. I never thought of it as a Catholic specifically, but it makes sense. We are Catholic and Easter Sunday was a day for a big roast with grandparents or extended family and we wore our new clothes. We got a few eggs but as I got older we got money instead so probably the equivalent of 10 or 15 from grandparents and aunts etc. I always did well out of it! To be fair we bloody deserved it, we were off things for lent, we did the really long Holy Thursday mass, stations of the Cross on Good Friday then another mass Easter Sunday morning. It was such a relief to be over it. With my kids we might do 1 mass or stations max and they get one egg from us plus whatever from grandparents. They also get one at school, at tennis, at soccer, at drama etc. Literally every activity seems to hand them out now. For that reason we don't do much else. We usually have a roast and a family meet up too. I like it, none of the pressure of Christmas and no extra decorations or clean up. I'm not on SM and honestly when I read these threads it reminds me why. I think I'd be constantly complaining about SM attention seeking if I was.

SusiQ18472638 · 05/04/2026 14:35

I don’t go mad for Easter, just do an Easter egg hunt, but I think it’s a bit moany to rant about what other people choose to do! Let people get their joy where they want, it doesn’t affect you.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 05/04/2026 14:36

@Drivingmissrangey what's an Easter tree? It is just like a Christmas one but with eggs and chicks or is it a religious thing?

Anononony · 05/04/2026 14:38

Mine had 4 eggs (2 small, 1 medium, 1 large) and a chocolate bunny, the large egg was from my mum, and 9 tiny eggs each hidden around the house

The dog got a dog safe one too

No gifts or clothes, but they both have march birthdays so gifts on Easter would be overkill. If you have kids with oct/nov/dec birthdays I could see it being a good time to gift summer/outdoor toys

EagerWriter · 05/04/2026 14:49

Not a catholic in sight but at our church children get lots of easter eggs. Much talk of easter egg hunts in gardens this afternoon and plenty of new outfits and bunny ears being worn. So not quite the spend of Christmas but traditions being maintained. Talk after church today was about the special offers on legs of lamb in the big supermarkets this year.

GetOnWithLife · 05/04/2026 14:51

My kids always got pyjamas off DH & I and a few eggs from the Easter bunny. We are not religious, new winter pj’s for Easter is a bit of a tradition in Australia as it’s getting colder. Used to get them a character tooth brush too, now it’s just cash.

ScarlettOYara · 05/04/2026 14:52

I think when people got new clothes at Easter it was a time when they probably didn't get many clothes the rest of the year.

Not in our church. Quite a tradition of new dress/ outfit for Christmas and again at Easter. Admittedly there is lots of handing down or across to other families of winter coats.(The most gorgeous velvet collared coat is now being worn by the third little girl in the church).
