What to do? Took my 12 year old gc into a cafe for lunch today, and a dog
snapped her ankle as we walked by. It drew blood. No idea why it picked on her.
She did nothing beyond walking in the door.

The dog owner 'fled the scene' as it were. Made a hasty exit while he had the chance and everyone was looking at the injury.

Wouldn't it just be better if we kept dogs out of what really should be an exclusively human area?

The argument that "they are allowed here so suck it up" is wearing thin.
We are all very fed up of your dogs in human spaces. The vast majority of us would prefer a dog free space.

Absolute rubbish! I’ve never ever experienced this and actually whenever we’re anywhere with our dog we’re approached by people asking for a stroke. Sometimes we have to ask people not to fuss over her!

Not so rubbish……..not everyone is as responsible as you are. There are lots of small dogs around us and some owners insist on picking up their dogs, particularly one they’ve just acquired and doing exactly as I described!

paintedpanda · 05/04/2026 07:57

I don’t mind dogs in cafes although I don’t take my own anywhere like that because she’s a wanderer (obviously on the lead) and I’d rather eat in peace. I think they must know who hates them and react to it.
I hate cats. I don’t think they should have the freedom to roam, but I’ve noticed it’s always cat haters whose garden they shit in and leave dead birds to rot. They must also know who hates them.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a kid biting someone

and SEN issues are clearly a disability and are covered by disability law

I’ve seen children into people carrying hot food and drinks, they got scalded.

EverythingGolden · 05/04/2026 07:58

These things tend to be driven by market forces so if it pays for an establishment to attract dog owners, they will probably allow dogs. If it doesn’t they won’t. Unless there was some sort of legislation passed but this seems unlikely and an overreaction to something fairly uncommon.

HungryHungryLandsharks · 05/04/2026 07:58

I've never heard of a dog being on it's 'last chance' - not in the UK, anyway.

Think the Easter Bunny wasn't just leaving chocolate last night 😏

Where do you live? I need to move there. It’s sounds like absolute bliss that you can go about your day without being surrounded by dogs.

West coast seaside town 🙂

This is the worst thing you can do with your child, because you are reinforcing her terror when you make her close her eyes. Ask around to find someone who has a dog that is great with children and do a slow introduction over a few meetings - i.e, first at a distance, then closer.

When I were looking after my DB’s black lab I’d often get approached by parents asking if their small child could stroke him to get them used to dogs.

localnotail · 05/04/2026 08:03

I went to a pizza place once and there was a couple with several small kids and a HUGE hairy dog (I cant remember the breed - grey shaggy thing, looking like a big emaciated wet wolf). The dog was friendly enough but the space was small and this dog was forever walking between tables, its owners had no chance of looking after it as were busy with their numerous toddlers - so the dog was walking pushing between chairs, people's backs, sniffing food, and at one point was literally under my elbows. It was kind of gross, eating with this huge, hairy, (and not very clean smelling) thing inches away from my food. I felt sorry for the dog tbh but it shouldn't have been there - or, at least, it should have been lying down somewhere in the corner..

popcornandpotatoes · 05/04/2026 07:56

Same. I don't know anyone who hates dogs the way they do on Mn

I hate dogs. I don’t advertise it in real life because people get bizarrely offended.

Whenlifegiveslemons · 05/04/2026 08:07

Yes im sick of dogs being everywhere. Both of my children are frightened of them so quite stressful for them. There seems to be more acceptance for dogs than kids these days.

CK13v · 05/04/2026 04:25

But you seem able to start threads at 3am.

I’d have thought somebody as busy as you would be tucked up fast asleep.

I sense bt.

Oh, should I apologise for not posting at 3am when I set my alarm clock to put the drop in my eye that has to go in every 4 hours for the next month and couldn't get back to sleep?

I'm with you OP, places serving and selling food are no place for dogs. Their barking is driving me crazy!

EverythingGolden · 05/04/2026 08:08

I assume that some shops have started letting dogs in because they have calculated that it pays them to do so. There is no other reason where market forces are at play. They would soon stop if it wasn’t paying them for some reason.

Rileysp · 05/04/2026 07:56

No they are not.

SEN is different to a disability. A protected disability is only something that is a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term effect on a person's ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

Justcallmedaffodil · 05/04/2026 08:09

Took my 12 year old gc into a cafe for lunch today

then…

I have reported it. It bit my child.

and then…

Dgc was wearing a skirt and leggings,
Bite still punctured her skin

So which is it OP, your child or your grandchild? Or is this just a manufactured story to fit your agenda of getting at dog owners?

Hotchocolate19 · 05/04/2026 08:10

Our local garden centre doesn’t allow dogs and its newly extended cafe is always very busy. I’m sure, like us, people visit this garden centre because of their no dog policy.

My garden centre cafe is always packed and does allow dogs.
Perhaps people just like going to garden centres at this time of year 😅

Yabu I love seeing them too and have never had an aggressive experience. The vast majority are not aggressive- same as humans.

That’s ok then. As long as the vast majority aren’t aggressive. What does it matter if the odd child gets bitten?

cobrakaieaglefang · 05/04/2026 08:12

I have a large, cuddly looking dog, we are approached by lots of people asking to say hello. If someone wants to avoid, thats fine, no problem. Don't think I've ever had someone openly hostile and quite frankly their opinion wouldn't be important. We only go to cafes when away on holiday, I look for outside seating as she is a big dog and takes up room. I don't like shopping and only go for essential stuff so no need for her to go, she gets left home. She does go to dog friendly attractions though and through a dog training club has gone to special days at some not dog friendly places as a special arrangement for dog training. Most places need to make the best commercial decision if that includes dogs and owners thats their decision. Anti dog people need to make sure they frequent the pubs/ cafes etc enough to compensate.

No way. I love dogs and seeing them when I’m out and about.

You’re OK with dogs biting people?

GingerBeverage · 05/04/2026 08:15

Most don’t. What a silly comment.

MyOliveStork · 05/04/2026 08:19

I love dogs and have 2 labs myself.
However I am not a big fan of dogs being welcome in cafes and restaurants etc. Not all dogs and owners are trained to be in this environment with other dogs in close contact. Dogs lash out, become nervous, bark, owners are distracted and not in control.
Sit with dogs outside I would say fine but not inside.

Vast majority would prefer it yes but the owners would find trade very difficult

agatamum · 05/04/2026 08:20

I’m allergic to most dogs. That’s a pity because I quite like them.
I dont like when I’ve booked a table in a restaurant/cafe ( that doesn’t state online that it’s dog friendly so you just have to suck it up when you arrive) . I’ve been in John Lewis once and a dog off the lead came up to me sniffing around.
and last week at an outdoor cafe another dog off a lead jumped on top of me to grab my sandwich.
I don’t care that he didn’t “draw blood” (“ therefore that’s ok”) It’s antisocial, completely selfish and annoying
