AIBU to want cafes to be dog free after grandchild was bitten?

1000 replies

OhSoTrue · 05/04/2026 03:07

What to do? Took my 12 year old gc into a cafe for lunch today, and a dog
snapped her ankle as we walked by. It drew blood. No idea why it picked on her.
She did nothing beyond walking in the door.

The dog owner 'fled the scene' as it were. Made a hasty exit while he had the chance and everyone was looking at the injury.

Wouldn't it just be better if we kept dogs out of what really should be an exclusively human area?

The argument that "they are allowed here so suck it up" is wearing thin.
We are all very fed up of your dogs in human spaces. The vast majority of us would prefer a dog free space.

Exactly the problem.

Can you articulate how this could be a problem?

WhyWouldSomeoneDoThat · 05/04/2026 21:44

I completely agree with you OP and other PPs. My daughter was badly bitten by a dog in a completely unprovoked attack in a public place and my dog was badly bitten by a larger aggressive dog on a walk, too. That has completely dissolved any tolerance I have for strangers dogs approaching me when we’re out and about. With owners assuming that their dogs are just these cute harmless fluffy things and anyone with a different opinion is obviously completely wrong. They are delusional. Dogs are animals, with animal instincts. No matter how spoiled they are by their humans , they do not see the the world with human eyes and brain. They are animals.

If my gran was seriously injured by a child running into her, should children be banned from a cafe? There are far more injuries caused by people than dogs.

Many people with disabilities couldn't even go out without their dog. Maybe no children in your family have had to rely on dogs to support them in this way, but should all disabled people be permanently banned? It's not right that a dog bit someone, but it is worse to effectively ban all disabled people forever-don't you agree? Or I bet you would if your grandchild became disabled, no? That's happened with children I know (after illness or injury), which is why I support dogs being welcome; as it is so hard to get an official service dogs, many have to rely on pets.
Plus businesses make far more money from people with dogs, and many would close if they weren't welcome.

I am sorry about your granddaughter. I hope she is ok. I hope that dog gets put down especially if this is not the first incident.

I was in a restaurant yesterday with a friend and his new gf. Massive stinky dog came in. I didn't want to make a scene as I was meeting my friend's gf for the first time, but it put me right off my food, it smelled soooo bad. Luckily the owner was just waiting for a takeaway so she was out within 15 minutes, but it really marred my dining experience. I am so very sick of dogs in eating places, dogs in shops, malls etc. Sick of dogs full stop. I agree the tide is turning.

What makes you think the tide is turning? I don’t think more places are banning dogs than used to?

YeOldeGreyhound · 05/04/2026 21:59

Late to the thread and not reading it all.

I have my Bingo card out though. Have we had someone whining about dog anuses on seats? Also people who have dogs can't form human relationships?
All dog owners stink of dog and have poor hygiene? Taking a dog into a place that allows dogs means someone is akin to Satan?

The owner of the dog sounds like an irresponsible owner, and if their dog is prone to snapping at strangers then they should not be in a place where it could happen.
However, most dog owners know their dogs and know what places are suitable for them. My dog loved cafes, and we spent many hours in them over the years. Yes, I could have left her at home, but the café was part of her walk and we enjoyed each other's company, so why would I leave her at home?

I hope your GC is ok.

It’s called wishful thinking. I don’t see any evidence that the tide is turning at all.

All of the above. Plus “people trump dogs EVERYTIME” and also, a new one,stench-beast (which I quite liked).

Sounds like a good new nick name for some people I know 😆

Scattery · 05/04/2026 22:14

The real problem here is accountability. The dog that bit your granddaughter needs to be banned from being out in public, and its owner fined. Punishing other dog owners for one person's bad behaviour is unreasonable.

Anyhow, I'd rather sit next to a dog in a cafe than a person bellowing into a Zoom call or blaring music from their phone. And I'm in London so I've seen some QUESTIONABLE hygiene from humankind.

Well there was a fucking HORSE in our local Sainsbury’s yesterday.
Not a ‘quick pop in must buy bread or my kids will die’ either - woman had a TROLLY.
i like dogs but I don’t want to see them everywhere.
i also like horses but in a supermarket?? Really?? I don’t care if it is your ‘emotional support animal’.

Edited

Noooooooo... What size horse?

Noooooooo... What size horse?

I am scared of horses. Full size ones anyway.

Some small horses go into care homes and hospitals as they are Pet as Therapy animals.

Absolutely ridiculous that it gets a final warning should be put down on the first warning

Depending on the circumstances, surely? My friends lovely dog bit someone, but they were at the vets and she had told the man repeatedly to back off and leave the dog alone as she was stressed and not well. He persisted and got bitten. Room full of witnesses, and staff at the vets said if he made a complaint they were happy to say he'd been warned.

I am in a dog group on FaceBook, and a member there had a deaf dog that he had to have PTS after it bit a child. The dog was asleep on the sofa, and the child, which was a neighbour, sat on it. It woke up startled and bit the child. Not surprising at all. But being that it was a neighbour it happened to, they made his life hell and he had to have the dog PTS. He was absolutely devastated about it. I tear up when I think about it. He had been in the group a long time and doted on his dog.
He was a vulnerable disabled man and had no idea how to fight things. He just didn't want his neighbours threatening him and it was the only way to stop it.

More and more people are speaking up about how much they don't want dogs in cafes/shops etc, and I do know several places have banned dogs after incidents (biting/tripping/shitting).

Then go there, surely, instead of going to and then whinging about places that do allow dogs?

It sounds like there are some dog free places for you to go to then. Pointless then whining about places that allow dogs, that you are not going to anyway.

I just googled “dog free cafe York” and all I got were links to dog friendly places.

Starbucks

It is definitely worth complaining .Cafe owners do rethink their rules when people speak up.

How on earth did a neighbour end up sitting on a deaf dog?

So sad for the owner but events like this are usually entirely predictable.

LoftyPlumLion · 06/04/2026 07:22

I don’t know the exact data but I suspect that dog friendly and dog neutral people are probably the majority I’m afraid.

while I’m sorry your daughter got nipped it is a tiny minority of dogs that would go that

Not at all stores, no they don’t. The PP was asking about York.

you can however buy the pup cups in the drive through.
