AIBU to want cafes to be dog free after grandchild was bitten?

OhSoTrue · 05/04/2026 03:07

What to do? Took my 12 year old gc into a cafe for lunch today, and a dog
snapped her ankle as we walked by. It drew blood. No idea why it picked on her.
She did nothing beyond walking in the door.

The dog owner 'fled the scene' as it were. Made a hasty exit while he had the chance and everyone was looking at the injury.

Wouldn't it just be better if we kept dogs out of what really should be an exclusively human area?

The argument that "they are allowed here so suck it up" is wearing thin.
We are all very fed up of your dogs in human spaces. The vast majority of us would prefer a dog free space.

No, it's not necessarily short haired dogs that don't smell. Different breeds have different types of fur, some are more like hair.

Also while some dogs have smelly breath many do not.

But I guess you are another pathetic dog hater

Are you some sort of parody account?

you’re hilarious

You are legally expected to control your dog in public. As an owner. Some dogs due to breed are bound to be more aggressive or bite-y, see pp re dachshunds.

Exactly - which is why the owners are the problem. If you know your dog is aggressive or over friendly (like mine was) you don't take them. Other people should not be annoyed by your dog, never mind bitten

Held to account for what?

For keeping customers safe within their establishment.
These places have a duty of care to customers

I haven’t asked for any posts to be deleted - and I certainly wouldn’t ask for yours to be deleted- you are far too amusing 🤣

that being said I’m not surprised you are getting deleted - all that internet shouting and name calling you are indulging in 🤣

you can’t smell it cause you live it (and you probably smell of it too). Your nose is used to it. It’s the same for smokers -
they can’t tell how they smell either. 👃

Go on. Google dog free cafe.

for the whole of the UK? Or give me an area? I’ve done it for someone in South Manchester, who couldn’t manage it themselves.

The "silent majority" is a weird, made-up concept. If they're silent how do they know they're the majority? I can seethe silently with the best of them (not about dogs) but I don't assume everyone is seething silently along with me.

On the other hand dog owners will have first-hand experience of seeing how many strangers are enthusiastic about their dogs. And cafe/pub owners will actually have crunched the numbers to find that being a dog-friendly establishment is better for business than banning dogs.

Ahh the classic dog owner mentality.

Citation please? Your rigorous survey of non dog owners with the data and evidence for this?

I can only offer anecdata but I for one am a non-dog owner who LOVES seeing dogs in pubs, cafes and parks. The same is true for most of my social circle. Dogs in pubs usually get patted, stroked or fussed from most other people in there.

In general, dogs in pubs and cafes are both very well-behaved and very popular with other customers. The hostility on this thread doesn't tally with anything I've seen in real life.

You can't really balance an argument on what you don't know, absolutely. If you love dogs, cool you're going to interact. If you don't want dogs around you while eating... what can you do? Not much. There is nothing outwardly to note the discomfort. You grin amd bear it. Your perception is entirely different to mine of course and no-one I've spoken to enjoys animals in the places we eat.

Dogs don't trump people. Dog owners don't seem to remember that. After being bitten my child has a right to feel safe. They don't and their enjoyment of public spaces is limited because of this.

Onleemoi · 05/04/2026 20:35

My dog trumps people I don’t know, to me. Why wouldn’t he? I’m responsible for him. I don’t put him in situations that might scare him.

@FastFood…Iwas just thinking the same thing, but it has been a while since we enjoyed one of these threads so I was wondering when we were due another one.

Well get used to it as the debate isn’t going away. It’s just so unfair to the people who don’t want to be in close proximity around dogs and irresponsible owners - they feel that they have no say and are rightfully pissed off with it.

Tbf lots of topics get repeated. P&C parking, mils, useless husbands, hopeless dog owners. The list goes on.
The clue is usually in the title which we can then decide to click on if it interests us?

Onleemoi · 05/04/2026 20:57

Yes, only click on the thread if you’re interested in the title and only visit dog friendly cafes if you’re ok
with dogs being there. So simple.

vodkaredbullgirl · 05/04/2026 20:58

Same shit, different day.

Well I don't like cars or motorcycles or sport being played in pubs and yet I have to cope. That's what living as a society is about.

I just googled “dog free cafe York” and all I got were links to dog friendly places.

I agree that dogs don’t trump people, but I don’t think non-dog owners trump dog owners either. Your child has a right to feel safe, and it’s on you as a parent to help them with that. otherwise they’re not going to enjoy being out.

I have children in the family who find dogs or noisy settings difficult, but other than children with ND who cannot find ways around, we all work to make sure they can cope so they can participate in things they enjoy. Sometimes that means looking for restaurants that don’t allow dogs, sometimes making sure they’re seated away from any dogs or noises. Sometimes reassuring and distracting them because they are safe and they need to learn to deal with things.

Scottishshopaholic · 05/04/2026 21:13

People need to be more assertive in cafes with the staff when this sort of thing happens.

Dog bites my child, owner leaves quickly. While attending to my child i would instruct the staff loudly to phone the police. Maybe they Weill rethink their policy when police are there in front of all the other people spending their money their.

Dog barking loudly/ spoiling meal, give the owner one chance to rectify. If it continues raise it with the staff immediately and say it is disturbing you. If the staff do not ask for the dog to be removed then I would ask for a large reduction in the bill due to the experience being spoiled.

FWIW I don’t mind some specific dog friendly cafes, in many the people there exclusively have dogs. But it seems to be everywhere now, and especially where there’s a kids toy corner and kids are expected to come and go I feel on edge with dogs there.

userohhuser · 05/04/2026 21:16

YANBU. My absolute would be a dog free park where to run with no worries.

Why should they? Again, dogs don't trump people.

Yes, so weird I prefer my dog to a stranger.
