AIBU to want cafes to be dog free after grandchild was bitten?

What to do? Took my 12 year old gc into a cafe for lunch today, and a dog
snapped her ankle as we walked by. It drew blood. No idea why it picked on her.
She did nothing beyond walking in the door.

The dog owner 'fled the scene' as it were. Made a hasty exit while he had the chance and everyone was looking at the injury.

Wouldn't it just be better if we kept dogs out of what really should be an exclusively human area?

The argument that "they are allowed here so suck it up" is wearing thin.
We are all very fed up of your dogs in human spaces. The vast majority of us would prefer a dog free space.

Just take a moment to reflect on how you've responded to people. It's unnecessary and rude. You sound unhinged.

How old are you? Because calling people thick and saying they have no brains simply because they have a different experience or opinion from you is reminiscent of a 6-year-old. Infection the 6-year-olds I know have more manners and rational thinking than you appear to have.

Little ones are the snappiest ime. Sausage dogs and dachshunds the worst! Cute looking til they'll launch at your ankles.

My DM was bitten by a Scottie dog when she was a child but outside her school. She’s never forgotten it!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 05/04/2026 16:59

Awww I love dachshunds. My best friend breeds standard ones. Non bitey on the whole.

They are very cute looking I'll maybe have to try and give one a stroke again Grin

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 05/04/2026 17:01

Anyway OP if you do come back, I hope your DD or granddaughter is ok and not too freaked out by the attack.

No way. I love dogs and seeing them when I’m out and about.

What do you mean by out and about? As in you enjoy seeing them in cafes? Do
you think the fact you like seeing dogs should trump the safety of others?

So I can take my dog…….the more I know, the better for me!

Its really not deep?

As far as I’m aware, no shops other than small Tesco locals etc, are open Easter Sunday?

What shops are open today is of no interest or relevance to me or my post whatsoever. I shopped yesterday. Today I went to a pub. It was a Greene King, they allow dogs at the venue manager's discretion.

Good try, btw, but you don't know where I live and very few nationwide shop chains allow dogs and I'm sure you would know those already.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 05/04/2026 17:05

I think I may take my cat to a cafe tomorrow. And if they protest say well Fido is allowed her so if you disallow cats then that’s discrimination.

To be fair, I’d much rather go to a cafe with dogs present over a cafe with messy, loud kids.

My heart sunk once when a large family with lots of kids sat down next to us in a restaurant. They were very noisy. They left quickly, fortunately, but unfortunately were replaced by an equally large group of adults who were much louder. It really was horrible.

I don’t think dogs should be in cafes, restaurants or supermarkets. They smell, lick things and, very unfortunately, sometimes bite people.

A few days ago, I was in a cafe, and the couple across the aisle from me had a dog on an extendable lead. They kept on allowing it to come over to me even though I asked them to keep it away. Apart from the fact that I didn’t want to play with their dog, it didn’t seem to occur to them that a lead across the gangway might trip up somebody - especially the staff who were rushing up and down.

Exactly. Discretion. I’m sure many here wouldn’t like to see an XL bully or other dangerous dog in a pub. And even worse in a pub that might have shock children in it! What could possibly go wrong?!

I understood completely. You were on the bus . The but which shop it's Easter Sunday! was rather random.

Some people have no manners or consideration for others. Bet they’d sue the venue if staff tripped and spilled hot food like soup over the dog.

If they’re forced then they’re essentially bullied by dog owners who want to bring their dogs in. Or they know they’ll lose custom if they disallow dogs. Recently a Gail’s opened in our area. All the smaller cafes were panicking and posted a FB post protesting. The small cafes still get loads of customers. As does Gail’s.

If they would lose more customers than they gain by banning dogs, that indicates dog friendly cafes are more popular in your area. Unless you're suggesting that dog owners are forcing their way in and ignoring the cafe owners preferences - I've never seen that happening personally, most cafes near me actively welcome dogs and provide drinking bowls etc.

Obviously it's going to vary, dog friendly cafes are going to be more popular in areas with lots of dog walkers and probably less popular in built up cities.

The hospitality sector is struggling at the moment, most cafes are not going to do something that reduces their business.

See, biting by dogs? That is totally unacceptable. I’d be tempted to sharply kick the dog back. That sort of dog will bite and attack simply because it wants to. Owner either can’t be bothered to or cannot stop or train it from doing so.

Well I would never kick back. I have to say on both occasions the owner didn’t believe me. Very frustrating.

mydogisthebest · 05/04/2026 16:26

No, it's not necessarily short haired dogs that don't smell. Different breeds have different types of fur, some are more like hair.

Also while some dogs have smelly breath many do not.

But I guess you are another pathetic dog hater

I’ll grant that some bigger male dogs who haven’t been “done” can smell a bit. But the vast majority of dogs will have been done. And yes while some dogs have bad breath I would be amazed that someone who hates dogs would get close enough to smell it.

Sadly that that's not what Greene King mean. They mean either a venue allows dogs, or it doesn't allow dogs at all.

It does state they must be on the lead and well behaved though. The one I was in today is a no dog except assistance dogs pub.

Edited

As there are 10 or more cafes and lots of pubs and restaurants then there should could be an equal split. One pub has had to have a sign allowing well behaved dogs and none on seats. The fact they should even have to spell this out is staggering.

I’ve seen the same about well behaved children being welcome… 🤷‍♀️
