AIBU to want cafes to be dog free after grandchild was bitten?

What to do? Took my 12 year old gc into a cafe for lunch today, and a dog
snapped her ankle as we walked by. It drew blood. No idea why it picked on her.
She did nothing beyond walking in the door.

The dog owner 'fled the scene' as it were. Made a hasty exit while he had the chance and everyone was looking at the injury.

Wouldn't it just be better if we kept dogs out of what really should be an exclusively human area?

The argument that "they are allowed here so suck it up" is wearing thin.
We are all very fed up of your dogs in human spaces. The vast majority of us would prefer a dog free space.

'Well its a business decision of course..Empty cafe with no dogs, full one that includes ddog'

Yet on another entitled dog owner thread we had a poster in an empty cafe with her dogs so this 'business decision' seems a bit flawed.

I’ve asked nicely! Please stop
stalking me! You’ve not quoted my whole post, but you’re quoting parts of it.

Its weird and I will report you if you continue doing this.

Literally 100s of other posters you can argue with, but you choose me? That’s not coincidence is it?

My post was very simple, you entirely dreamed up any idea of a shop being involved.

I was, I still am, pretty sure you were asking me what shop so that you could look up what shops were shut today and try to catch me out with a lie about where I'd been.

Because the name of the shop I had been in would have been completely irrelevant even if I had been in one, wouldn't it?

Dog pissed on the bus. Either a sizeable Shar Pei or a bigger mongrel. Streams of piss running down the aisle of the bus. I was just ahead of it getting off the bus, others won't be so lucky and will be forced to step in it.

That is disgusting. Probably not the dog’s or owner’s fault though. Dogs are allowed on public transport. Dog should have been exercised and allowed to move its bowels and bladder before getting on the bus.

I just said what I’d do, have pavement tables and a garden/courtyard. No dogs in interior.

Even if you lost revenue?

For me the worst bit is when another dog comes in and the dogs already in there go fucking apeshit and startle the hell out of everyone.

If a person started yelling whenever another customer came in, they’d be thrown out.

That. I wonder if I'd be better able tolerate it if the rule was one dog at a time. Can't stand when one barks and it sets all others off.

Gloriia · 05/04/2026 16:36

Some owners just started doing it and many business owners went along with it.
It needs to stop.

They didn't just passively go along with it though, lots of cafes allow dogs because dog friendly cafes are popular.

Goodness that’s an imagination….

To be fair, I’d much rather go to a cafe with dogs present over a cafe with messy, loud kids.

Both aren’t ideal. And parents are just as much at fault for letting feral kids run wild. It’s why some pubs these days including a local one of mine don’t let kids in anymore.

Edited

Yes maybe they should do what corner shops do with school kids and have a maximum number at any one time. I'd suggest 1 at a time Grin

Some dog friendly cafes are popular, I’m sure others are forced over a barrel to accept them because if they don’t they’ll lose customers.

Imdunfer · 05/04/2026 16:48

If it's a sound business decision to let dogs in then I wonder why by far the most successful one I go to (and we have a daily cafe/eatery habit) is the one with a no dogs rule.

I suspect in many places it's got more to do with whether the owner/manager likes dogs.

BoogieTownTop · 05/04/2026 16:45

Even if you lost revenue?

Yes. I’d have covers like shades out front and back so dogs and owners kept dry.

My DB is starting a business soon which could turn into a cafe, I wonder what he’d do.

Imdunfer · 05/04/2026 16:49

So I can take my dog…….the more I know, the better for me!

Its really not deep?

As far as I’m aware, no shops other than small Tesco locals etc, are open Easter Sunday?

I expect he hopes for a profitable business? As most do, I wonder if he could increase turnover by allowing dogs indoors if he’d do that?

Some posters here love and want dog friendly venues. Some dog owners don’t want to bring their dog to dog friendly venues. Some posters don’t want to go to venues which allow dogs. It’s not an all or nothing scenario.

And can I take my cat there too?!

id say sensible!

Well I’d certainly state what I thought was fair. Gardens and pavement tables are fair.

And the drawing blood through clothes and footwear

Why would you assume it was through footwear? Or clothes actually, the child may have been in cropped trousers, a skirt or shorts.

In any event, I was bitten through (linen) trousers and it drew blood. I had to have a rabies vaccination after it so it made a impression! This was a stray so nothing to do with the OP's scenario in any other way but just wanted to point out you haven't found a suspicious inconsistency here at all!

I have been bitten through trousers twice by little dogs. I am very wary of dogs, especially little ones.

BoogieTownTop · 05/04/2026 16:53

If they’re forced then they’re essentially bullied by dog owners who want to bring their dogs in. Or they know they’ll lose custom if they disallow dogs. Recently a Gail’s opened in our area. All the smaller cafes were panicking and posted a FB post protesting. The small cafes still get loads of customers. As does Gail’s.

Little ones are the snappiest ime. Sausage dogs and dachshunds the worst! Cute looking til they'll launch at your ankles.

See, biting by dogs? That is totally unacceptable. I’d be tempted to sharply kick the dog back. That sort of dog will bite and attack simply because it wants to. Owner either can’t be bothered to or cannot stop or train it from doing so.

CoffeeCantata · 05/04/2026 16:58

MyCrushWithEyeliner · 05/04/2026 03:18

No way. I love dogs and seeing them when I’m out and about.

Do you like being bitten by them? And for the owner to scarper while you have to ditch your plans and get to an A & E?

Awww I love dachshunds. My best friend breeds standard ones. Non bitey on the whole.
