AIBU to want cafes to be dog free after grandchild was bitten?

What to do? Took my 12 year old gc into a cafe for lunch today, and a dog
snapped her ankle as we walked by. It drew blood. No idea why it picked on her.
She did nothing beyond walking in the door.

The dog owner 'fled the scene' as it were. Made a hasty exit while he had the chance and everyone was looking at the injury.

Wouldn't it just be better if we kept dogs out of what really should be an exclusively human area?

The argument that "they are allowed here so suck it up" is wearing thin.
We are all very fed up of your dogs in human spaces. The vast majority of us would prefer a dog free space.

Well I would never kick back. I have to say on both occasions the owner didn’t believe me. Very frustrating.

Didn’t they see the dog biting you?

It’s amazing the amount of people whinging when very few nationwide shop chains allow dogs….

Actually a lot of chain shops nationwide do allow dogs.

Gloriia · 05/04/2026 17:14

'One pub has had to have a sign allowing well behaved dogs and none on seats. The fact they should even have to spell this out is staggering'

It is staggering. Under the table out of the way if at all. Not sat there on customers seats as if awaiting service.

Oh great!

I wonder why that PP thinks otherwise?

I’ve seen the same about well behaved children being welcome… 🤷‍♀️

I don’t like kids in pubs either unless they’re well behaved and some venues should be adults only. This same pub does not allow kids or bans them after a certain time.

As there are 10 or more cafes and lots of pubs and restaurants then there should could be an equal split. One pub has had to have a sign allowing well behaved dogs and none on seats. The fact they should even have to spell this out is staggering.

You don't get to choose which businesses allow dogs and which don't though. You get to choose which cafe/pub best meets your needs. If the dog free cafes become more popular then more cafes will become dog free.

I'm saw a Collie in John Lewis just last week! Poor thing, jostled by customers. You just knew it'd rather by having a nice walk somewhere.

Basically dogs have the same status as a human. Trouble is some people will vote with their feet. My boyfriend hates dogs and would walk out of one if there was one there. His money, his choice.

Exactly. A nice dog bed is what it needs not crowds practically stepping on its paws.

Probably - but they certainly didn’t want to admit to it.

I’m not saying I should get to decide. There should be a fair choice. After reading this thread and my locality I would think twice (but not completely shun) a venue that allows dogs. My money, my choice.

intrepidpanda · 05/04/2026 17:18

Is there any way the cafe can be held to account? If fines and criminal charges were brought against cafes and pubs it may encourage them to think twice about letting animals in their establishment in the same way some pubs are thinking twice about children.

Interesting question.

I actually think there’s quite a lot of nationwide shops which allow dogs. Off the top of my head from shops I like to visit…

john lewis
selfridges
Harvey Nichols
Zara
oliver bonas
anthropologie
Barbour
Joules
fat face
white stuff
seasalt
tk maxx
urban outfitters
homesense
mint velvet
White company
Toast
Space NK.
Mango
urban outfitters

marks and Spencer’s aren’t. Primark isn’t either.

What do they do about dog hair, drool and animals potentially pooing weeing or being sick there?

Its awful. As a dog owner I know they often behave unpredictably and can do a surprise wee, particularly if stressed in crowded areas. Why risk it?
Assistance dogs have specific training to deal with noisy areas, general pets don't.

These posts just go round in circles really!

One cross section want dogs allowed in cafes

One cross section don’t

So, currently both are catered for, what’s the issue?

When you arent expecting someone's dog to come and wipe its nose up your trousers and the owner says hes just saying hello. With dog snot. Great.

Absolutely and others that prefer to take their dogs will go to those cafes! Perfect!

You're hilarious. Ever thought of being a stand up comic? I guess you have smelt all the dogs in the world breath? Thought not

@mydogisthebest

dogs stink. I don’t know why you’re so pressed

Go to a cafe that doesn’t allow dogs? Just a suggestion.

Allisnotlost1 · 05/04/2026 17:35

Well this thread really has brought out all the loons! Honestly is it so hard to just go somewhere you enjoy, whether dog friendly or free, and live and let live?

Go on. Google dog free cafe.

Rintintinsbasket · 05/04/2026 17:56

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 05/04/2026 16:44

That is disgusting. Probably not the dog’s or owner’s fault though. Dogs are allowed on public transport. Dog should have been exercised and allowed to move its bowels and bladder before getting on the bus.

You can't blame the dog, only the owner for not attending to the dog's needs
