AIBU to want cafes to be dog free after grandchild was bitten?

What to do? Took my 12 year old gc into a cafe for lunch today, and a dog
snapped her ankle as we walked by. It drew blood. No idea why it picked on her.
She did nothing beyond walking in the door.

The dog owner 'fled the scene' as it were. Made a hasty exit while he had the chance and everyone was looking at the injury.

Wouldn't it just be better if we kept dogs out of what really should be an exclusively human area?

The argument that "they are allowed here so suck it up" is wearing thin.
We are all very fed up of your dogs in human spaces. The vast majority of us would prefer a dog free space.

It’s gross. The barking, the bashing tails and pushing when they move around… why anyone thinks a cafe is a place for a dog is crazy. Leave them at home or don’t come in! When you get a dog there are compromises- everyone knows that.

I don’t hate dogs- I have no problem with well behaved dogs in parks etc but people with allergies, phobias, hearing aids (a friend of mine has to leave cafes when dogs start barking due to the discomfort). But I don’t like them in shops and cafes etc. it never used to happen, what changed??

I wondered what shops let the dogs in!

I never mentioned shops. I said I caught the bus to get some lunch.

People saying that some dogs don’t smell because they’re short haired…. So….? All dogs stink regardless. Their breath is rank for example

No, it's not necessarily short haired dogs that don't smell. Different breeds have different types of fur, some are more like hair.

Also while some dogs have smelly breath many do not.

But I guess you are another pathetic dog hater

Rintintinsbasket · 05/04/2026 16:28

@Blushingm Kids don’t lick their own genitalia or eat other animals poo

Maybe not, but according to another thread on this site they pick their noses and spread boogies on the walls and under cushions 😮

Ok! You seem very agitated for a simple error? My first post did say as you mentioned aisle, with a ? You surely realised I wasn’t a 100% sure?

It’s really not deep!

No way. I love dogs and seeing them when I’m out and about.

I love tigers 🐅

Move to India? More likely to see them then.

For me the worst bit is when another dog comes in and the dogs already in there go fucking apeshit and startle the hell out of everyone.

If a person started yelling whenever another customer came in, they’d be thrown out.

they do though! As I said before they all have rank breath. And they often fart a lot.

ALL DOGS STINK. PERIOD.

they do all have bad breath I’m afraid because they’re can’t floss, brush teeth, mouthwash twice a day.

A lot of humans don’t do that ..

You’re confusing dogs with children. The dog won’t come to any harm if it’s left alone. I’m an animal lover but I don’t want to see pubs and cafes taken over by dogs. It’s a relatively new thing and no one can be challenged because it’s the dog’s ‘right’ to be in there. Well actually it isn’t. It’s the dog’s right to be looked after kindly by its owners but that ‘right’ doesn’t trump the rights of other pub/cafe users.

I am not confusing dogs with children. I know my dog won't come to any harm if left alone but I don't want him left alone. He is sometimes like when we go supermarket shopping but otherwise why should we not take him out with us.

It means we can go out for a whole day rather than just a few hours which is great for us and our dog. He gets nice walks interspersed with time in a cafe for breakfast and then lunch.

I never said my dog's right trumps the right of other cafe users as, believe it or not, it is not me that decided whether an eating place is going to allow dogs is it? We have had dogs for almost 50 years and for most of that time dogs were not allowed inside cafes or restaurants (well except in France). We have had many a meal sitting outside in cold and/or rain but it's brilliant that now we can sit inside in the warm with him

Nah. I'd rather just rescue one and take it to a cafe for some tea.

Hmm I don’t think many cafes allow that.

Get a dog, loads of cafes let them in! Loads of places say dog friendly.

Some owners just started doing it and many business owners went along with it.
It needs to stop.

The thing is, there have always been dogs in this country. Not everybody loves dogs but owners largely looked after their dogs properly and people who didn’t like dogs just went on their own business.

There has been a huge change both in the number of dogs and the attitude of the owners. That’s why people are getting fed up.

Many dog owners do not control their dogs and feel the need to take them out to cafés and shops all the time. I feel sorry for the good dog owners as they are getting tarred by the same brush, as some of the entitled and antisocial types we can see posting on here. It is a change in attitude for the worse.

I agree that because so many more people have dogs it is far more noticeable in some places that there are illbehaved dogs. The same though is true of parents and children.

I am old enough to remember when children were much much better behaved than they are now and parents actually bothered to parent. Now they allow their children to do as they please, make as much noise and mess as they please and generally piss a lot of people off. If some dog owners are entitled some parents are much more entitled

'Well its a business decision of course..Empty cafe with no dogs, full one that includes ddog'

Yet on another entitled dog owner thread we had a poster in an empty cafe with her dogs so this 'business decision' seems a bit flawed.

Empty cafe with no dogs, full one that includes dogs.

As an owner, what would you do?

I just said what I’d do, have pavement tables and a garden/courtyard. No dogs in interior.

Yes that’s happened to me. Luckily when I’m not near them as I would be pissed off.

My post was very simple, you entirely dreamed up any idea of a shop being involved.

I was, I still am, pretty sure you were asking me what shop so that you could look up what shops were shut today and try to catch me out with a lie about where I'd been.

Because the name of the shop I had been in would have been completely irrelevant even if I had been in one, wouldn't it?

Dog pissed on the bus. Either a sizeable Shar Pei or a bigger mongrel. Streams of piss running down the aisle of the bus. I was just ahead of it getting off the bus, others won't be so lucky and will be forced to step in it.

Exactly. Or was it just a really quiet cafe on that day?

It's awful, many dogs just don't like to be indoor with other strange dogs nearby. Why stress them out? They want walks, woods, beaches, fresh air. Not to be cooped up getting tripped over while it's owner sips their coffee and eats cake.

Cherry8809 · 05/04/2026 16:43

To be fair, I’d much rather go to a cafe with dogs present over a cafe with messy, loud kids.
