AIBU to want cafes to be dog free after grandchild was bitten?

What to do? Took my 12 year old gc into a cafe for lunch today, and a dog
snapped her ankle as we walked by. It drew blood. No idea why it picked on her.
She did nothing beyond walking in the door.

The dog owner 'fled the scene' as it were. Made a hasty exit while he had the chance and everyone was looking at the injury.

Wouldn't it just be better if we kept dogs out of what really should be an exclusively human area?

The argument that "they are allowed here so suck it up" is wearing thin.
We are all very fed up of your dogs in human spaces. The vast majority of us would prefer a dog free space.

Out of curiosity, would people mind if they went to see their GP, and the GP’s dog was wandering around the room?

I’d love it!

The local priest used to have a Labrador, used to lie on the altar during services. Occasionally let out the odd bark.

Gloriia · 05/04/2026 15:21

'I really wish something could be done about it.'

Complain, it works. It is annoying that we have to but some gormless owners just seem to have been pressured by some selfish dog owners.

Pets should not be in cafes. It should be common sense but sadly not.

Oh some would then take theirs too. I haven't seen one in a waiting room, yet..
Give it time Grin

I love dogs and don't want them banned but owners need to be held responsible for any incidents that occur and muzzle them if they are aggressive. Went for afternoon tea and there was a cockerpoo just going for everything that walked past including its owner. Its ridiculous when you think you are sitting down to eat and there's an uncontrollable animal sat next to you

Yes, but not “everyone” appreciates the dogs there because a few did.

I suspect a good many weren’t bothered one way or the other. I wouldn’t be. I don’t mind dogs in cafes/pubs, as long as they don’t block my way to the bar or to the toilets. I haven’t been bothered by dogs in eating establishments beyond that really.

Cherrytree86 · 05/04/2026 15:30

People saying that some dogs don’t smell because they’re short haired…. So….? All dogs stink regardless. Their breath is rank for example

teenagedirtbag1990 · 05/04/2026 14:54

Maybe this should be the same for some adults then!!! Who abuse kids and dogs and anyone

@teenagedirtbag1990

lol don’t be silly. Dogs who are dangerous and that bite should be put to sleep. Who would want them?? It’s for the best

BoogieTownTop · 05/04/2026 15:36

These posts just go round in circles really!

One cross section want dogs allowed in cafes

One cross section don’t

So, currently both are catered for, what’s the issue?

Onleemoi · 05/04/2026 15:40

The issue is the entitled lot think the reasonable lot are entitled.

ILoveDaffodills · 05/04/2026 15:50

BiteSizeByzantine · 05/04/2026 14:23

Out and about. Not smelling them near the food.

Out & about includes cafes & pubs.

Yup it's dirty and hygienic if I walked into a cafe and saw dogs i'd leave. Why does the dog need to come in ? I've seen a dog in a trolley in marks and Spencers and another dog taking a poo in
H &M . Leave the dog at home or outside
Unfortunately people seem to lose their minds when it comes to dogs and it takes incidents like these before something is done .However I bet nothing will change .

It's not dirty or unhygienic.

Your choice to leave 💁🏻‍♀️

Dog comes in because owners want them
to & only an idiot would leave a dig tied up outside these days.

i wouldn't put a dig in a trolley, but iif that bothers you, you clearly have no idea what happens to trollies overnight.

Obviously a dog shouldn't be pooing inside, but neither should humans, yet it happens.

People do lose their minds when it comes to dogs, wanting them banned from everywhere.

Not dirty or unhygienic? So dogs are never brought into cafes to park their arses on the floor right after taking a shit, are they not? Okay, then.

I am a decent dog owner which is why I take him out EVERY SINGLE DAY. He can be left alone but prefers to be with us and we like having him with us.

If we want to go out for the day then, obviously, we take him with us. Maybe we should be like our neighbour and leave him for anything from 6 to 24 hours alone?

You’re confusing dogs with children. The dog won’t come to any harm if it’s left alone. I’m an animal lover but I don’t want to see pubs and cafes taken over by dogs. It’s a relatively new thing and no one can be challenged because it’s the dog’s ‘right’ to be in there. Well actually it isn’t. It’s the dog’s right to be looked after kindly by its owners but that ‘right’ doesn’t trump the rights of other pub/cafe users.

Bless ‘em but they shouldn’t be in eateries or pubs

Although hard to see how it’s entitled to take your dogs places they’re welcomed.

Like I stayed in a pp my friend’s dogs are both far happier at home rather than out. Though they love the park of course.

BippityBopper · 05/04/2026 16:12

mydogisthebest · 05/04/2026 13:45

That's because a lot of them don't smell but pathetic dog haters like you will not admit that or don't have the brains to realise it

I don't have brains to realise that I can't infact smell a dog even though I think I can??? 🤔

You're clearly triggered. Calling me pathetic and all.

mydogisthebest · 05/04/2026 16:13

LoneCar · 05/04/2026 13:52

Just out of interest, are you one of those owners that lets your dog bound up to people and say, ‘oh he’s just being friendly?’

No I am not. My dog is always on lead unless in an enclosed dog field so that's your theory blown apart

Onleemoi · 05/04/2026 16:10

Yes but is it welcomed or do the owners feel caught over a barrel because if they don’t allow them they lose custom? If I had a cafe I’d only allow dogs in a garden, pavement table not in the interior. That’s more than fair.

That’s the issue, for every nice dog owner there are idiots who let dogs bound around a venue. Approaching people. And happy for the dog to do this. It’s not the dog’s fault it’s the owners fault for letting it do this, ergo sitting on seats. Which is unhygienic. And we’re not even onto the subject of people who have allergies. Should they be barred in favour of a canine?

Imdunfer · 05/04/2026 16:19

NormasArse · 05/04/2026 14:59

Did the person attempt to clean it up, or report it to the driver?

No. He was still on the bus when I got off. I told the driver. The owner was not a person I would have be chosen to confront.

Yes the cafe owners feel pressured so go along with it.

Complain! I have a dog and I do not enforce her presence on others in indoor settings.

Well its a business decision of course..

Empty cafe with no dogs, full one that includes dogs.

As an owner, what would you do?
