Is this furniture too cramped (pics)

Posting here for traffic. I got an absolute bargain on Gumtree yesterday- a chair for £30 that is currently selling in Dunelm for £259! It’s the smaller checked chair in the pics. Does it look okay here, or is there now too much furniture in the room?

It does look a little cluttered imo.

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 04/04/2026 20:24

Do you need the chair, as in is their enough space to sit without it. I personally wouldn't add the chair if I didn't need it but thats my preference

Archymum · 04/04/2026 20:25

It's too big for that corner and I think it looks cramped because it's pushed right up against the shelving unit.

Breadcat24 · 04/04/2026 20:26

could you move the cabinet

ChangePrivacyQuestion · 04/04/2026 20:27

It's in style, so it works. It'd be too cluttered for me, but I'm a minimalist, which, again, isn't to everyone’s taste.

TimeToThrive · 04/04/2026 20:29

From these photos, your home looks like a warm cosy place and like people actually live there. I love it. The chair is fab. X

Didimum · 04/04/2026 20:29

It’s fine

Gingercar · 04/04/2026 20:29

I think it looks fine.

Chairdilemma · 04/04/2026 20:30

I could move it to the dining area under the table at one end. We only need it if people visit as there’s only 2 of us

Did you have sufficient seating without it? If so, I'd get rid of it, there's a slight air of old people's home with so many chairs

Drowningincokezero · 04/04/2026 20:30

Could you turn the cabinet 90 degrees and have it next to the settee, then the new chair could sit at an angle kind of in front of it?

zantez · 04/04/2026 20:32

Looks ok to me. I think I'd try out putting both chairs straight on rather than at an angle and see how it looks. I know they will encroach the open entry to the back room a bit, but I'd like to see what it looked like anyway - if I were you that is! Then if it doesn't work, leave as you have them.

Chairdilemma · 04/04/2026 20:32

Can’t move the cabinet unfortunately. I know it’s a bit old fashioned but I actually love it. It was my Nanna’s and it’s around 80 years old.

I like it. It’s cozy!

Allonthesametrain · 04/04/2026 20:34

You still have so much space so works fine, also a beautiful setting you have. The more seats you can into a room the better IMO and IME.

One can have minimal seating but when you have lots of people round you pul out all extra chairs to accommodate, so having them ready is a bonus 😉 xx

Sartre · 04/04/2026 20:34

I’d ditch the cabinet in truth. I haven’t seen a house with cabinets like that since my Gran’s in the 90s!

WhatAMarvelousTune · 04/04/2026 20:34

It looks like it’s slightly in the way of the path from the doorway to the dining room?

I think it’s fine, and I’d have it if I needed it. But for only two of you I think it’s unnecessarily cluttered when it doesn’t need to be.

Childanddogmama · 04/04/2026 20:36

As you don't actually need it for everyday seating, I'd move it.
You have a lovely, welcoming room.

FeelingSadToday1 · 04/04/2026 20:36

Did you post recently OP and move the whole room around?

It's too cluttered for me but does look cosy. If you like it then it shouldn’t matter what everyone else thinks.

Chairdilemma · 04/04/2026 20:38

See I love the cabinet! My Nanna and Grandad would have had that since the 1940’s so it is very sentimental! I remember my Grandad having a soda stream and snow ball drinks in it in the 70”s 🥰

MerryStork · 04/04/2026 20:38

It looks lovely! Not cluttered in my opinion!

Chairdilemma · 04/04/2026 20:39

I did post about the sofa a few months ago, yes!!

Neveranynamesleft · 04/04/2026 20:43

Love this style of chair and fabric but....I too would get rid of the cabinet, too much in the room for me sorry. I bet its full of other 'stuff' you absolutely positively can't get rid of too 😊

JumpinJehoshaphat · 04/04/2026 20:43

It’s quite cluttered and dated looking. But not terrible. If you need that much seating, go for it.

TheGoodOnesAreAllGone · 04/04/2026 20:44

I think it looks a bit cluttered because it's pushed right up to the wall. I'd get rid of the small rug and move both chairs closer together to make a bit of a divide between the living and dining areas.
Your home looks lovely and cosy, I like the lighting!
