Is this furniture too cramped (pics)

Posting here for traffic. I got an absolute bargain on Gumtree yesterday- a chair for £30 that is currently selling in Dunelm for £259! It’s the smaller checked chair in the pics. Does it look okay here, or is there now too much furniture in the room?

I'm not very knowledgeable about interior design, but if I walked into your house, 'cluttered' wouldn't spring to mind. I think it looks comfortable and welcoming.

Chairdilemma · 04/04/2026 20:50

Thank you for the positive vibes! I wish I could show you out of the window, we overlook a very ancient harbour, the sea and the Forth Rail Bridge 🛳️

It looks cosy. The chairs help seperate the lounge from the diner also.

Chairdilemma · 04/04/2026 20:52

As we’re in Scotland I quite like the traditional dark wood and tartan feel

Could you have the sofa with its back to the dining room and move the chairs and cabinet to the walls?

midlifeattheoasis · 04/04/2026 20:54

Yes, it’s very cluttered

KilkennyCats · 04/04/2026 20:57

Ignore those dissing your lovely cabinet, op.
As if that’s what you asked 🤦‍♀️

Pixiedust49 · 04/04/2026 20:57

It’s lovely! Who cares what anyone else thinks? They don’t live there, you do!

Ponoka7 · 04/04/2026 21:00

Unless such a big gap is needed, I'd position it slightly away from the cabinet. It's fine to have it free standing and creates a seperate living space.

Mummyoflittledragon · 04/04/2026 21:00

I would move the chair a couple of inches away from the cabinet. It will look more intentionally as though you’re trying to delineate the 2 spaces.

A really nice cozy comfy vibe!

HotRootsAndNaughtyToots · 04/04/2026 21:05

It looks homey and cosy, I like it

FuckaboutFindout · 04/04/2026 21:09

Too much furniture and sorry I really dont like 2 different checks

Xkk · 04/04/2026 21:09

Looks cosy and welcoming. My honest opinion is the only people who should have any input in the design of a house are the people who live in it. So enjoy the chair!!!

Wigglypasta · 04/04/2026 21:12

Your home looks lovely and cosy and I love that you have sentimental pieces that hold memories. It doesn't matter what any of us think though - do you love it is the only question you need to ask.

countrygirl99 · 04/04/2026 21:13

One person's cramped is another person's cosy. If it works for you it's fine. I wouldn't like it, I love airy but I don't live there so my view is irrelevant.

gluenotsoup · 04/04/2026 21:16

I think it’s just too close to the cabinet so it looks squashed in. Try moving it a little away and maybe take a few of the small items off the top of the cabinet as they are making it look busy in that area and it will probably open it up a bit. It look’s very welcoming and cosy

NoelEdmondsHairGel · 04/04/2026 21:19

Yikes it looks like a nursing home with all the comfy chairs squeezed in.

ConfusedSoShutUp · 04/04/2026 21:21

Swap over the two checked chairs (the new one is a bit lighter.. the darker one will "go" with the cabinet more. Then as PP said, don't squish the chair so close to the cabinet. Move the angles of the chairs a bit to give some space between the chair and cabinet

pteromum · 04/04/2026 21:25

If I visited, I would think, oh this is cosy and homely.

I like it, but I do not live there, so really it’s up to you! . Those chairs are lovely, and as a Scottish farmers wife it’s on trend to have one in every room and hallway. So I would also have bought it at that price!

Everyone is different though, my younger sister’s house is so grey and modern and we all joke about that. She grew up with proper flowery clutter.

Newmeagain · 04/04/2026 21:27

I don’t like clutter but I don’t think it looks cluttered.

As someone else said, it looks really welcoming. And no, I don’t think it looks dated.

properidiot · 04/04/2026 21:29

I think it looks lovely and cosy. I think the chairs look fine - kind of framing the archway into the dining space. I also love the cabinet too!

robinsnest1967 · 04/04/2026 21:31

I like it and think it looks fine!

PullyDog · 04/04/2026 21:32

I remember this front room. What is your goal here OP?

You wanted open space didn't you?
