Is “joggers” twatty?

Alsocalledsophie · 02/04/2026 11:08

I recently posted about changing into joggers when I come home after work. Another poster pulled me and others up on the use of the word “joggers,” labelling it “twatty.” I’m surprised as I thought this was fairly standard language at this point 🤔

IABU: joggers is twatty
YANBU: joggers is standard language, definitely not twatty

Sure, I have some plain black joggers that just resemble normal trousers but with softer material. I mean, I wouldnt wear them on a night out but they dont look "bad" in any way

It was the featuring elasticized ankles that made me wonder.

Joggers are made from the same material as sweatshirts - cotton or a polycotton mix and are usually loose fitting whereas tracksuits are made from polyester, nylon or similar and are close fitting with zip closures at the ankles.

Not round by me their all trackies.

It's not the words that are the issue. It is that they encourage denial about weight gain and disincentivise doing something about it such as less snacking.

wtf?!?!

Oh and I hate the word “snacking”

Not really a term we use in Ireland so I would have just thought it sounds "Englishy" 😜

Where do you stand on "gutties" ?

oh my lord I had to google that one 😂

They're daps! I've had posts deleted by MN for using a different word for them. Smile

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 02/04/2026 15:44

Yep, definitely daps.

ohh curious to know what the offending word was now 😂 Also had to google daps! I can't think of a specific term for those kind of shoes, we didn't really use them as a standard PE/Gym shoe though like the way British schools seemed to. I think most Irish people would just call all running/training type shoes "runners" Maybe some other Irish person can think of a name specifically for that type of shoe but I can't!

"Gutties" is a Norn Iron thing...I believe from the old fashioned canvas school PE "pumps" which had gutta-percha (rubber) soles.

AspiringChatBot · 02/04/2026 16:12

FWIW, I'm in the USA where they would typically be called sweatpants, but I have been seeing "joggers" advertised a lot recently. As someone said above it usually indicates tapered legs and shaped cuffs (rather than loose or the traditional simple elastic at the bottom). I wouldn't say the term is perceived as upscale or pretentious even in a US context, though (even SHEIN sell "joggers" now).

(But a "typical" American probably WOULD probably consider "twatty" affected, and possibly misogynist.)

ah it said Scottish when i googled it but there's a lot of Scottish influence in the NI dialect I think

@MyMilchick ,What is a Plimsoll line?

Apparently there was a foot fetishist troll.

Edited

😂 thanks

Ilovelurchers · 02/04/2026 18:05

I'd call them joggers (West Midlands).

I do remember people using the term "trackie bums' for them when I was at school. 'I had to put my trackie bums on' etc.

Anyone else remember that term?

Feel mild nostalgia for it now....

Natsku · 02/04/2026 18:08

Joggers is a perfectly normal word for them. As is trackie bottoms for tracksuit bottoms (though tbh I think I only started calling them that because of that arctic monkeys song)

My bloke calls his joggers his 'lazy trousers' which seems more accurate to me actually

Madarch · 02/04/2026 18:15

YANBtwatty

Blinky21 · 03/04/2026 09:11

They are Joggers where I am (midlands)

worldshottestmom · 04/04/2026 18:12

I'm in my joggers right now, av it

MooMoo74 · 04/04/2026 18:34

No, not at all twatty. In fact I call them joggy bottoms. When my Dp is getting the kids ready I’ll say just shove some joggy bottoms on them.

Iv never called them trackies. To me that’s a full tracksuit.

Come again? How can pants do that?

TakeMeToTheDarkSideOfTheMoon · 04/04/2026 18:38

Haha Mumsnet does make me laugh.

Some right grumps on here sometimes.

Personally I think saying that the word "joggers" is twatty is rather twatty but hey ho🤷‍♀️

Harry12345 · 04/04/2026 18:38

xILikeJamx · 02/04/2026 11:13

We would say "joggies" or "joggy bottoms" where I live. "Trackies" where I grew up. Much the same thing so wouldn't consider it twatty

Is that Glasgow?

Sartre · 04/04/2026 18:45

Joggers or trackies here in Yorkshire! Definitely not twatty.

MidnightEagle · 04/04/2026 18:53

I'm on the fence here. I do call them joggers but do feel like a twat when I say it 🤣🤣. I think we called them jogging bottoms or jogger bottoms growing up. I'm from Norn Iron so definitely had the gutties.

I think that's different to 'joggers'
